Rooting Green Twigs

After reading the recent posts concerning rooting green wood I cut about an eight inch tip end off my Joe Morle Paradiso and put it in a glass of water. I cut off the leaves, leaving the leaf stems and put the glass in a north window.

Three weeks later it has roots forming on the two nodes in the water and is pushing a small leaf from the tip.

A question for those of you who have done this before; Should I pot the twig now or should I wait for the roots to develop and lengthen? I can put the potted fig in a growing box to control humidity if that is an issue.

I pot mines as soon as i seen signs of roots forming. water roots form when under water and lack roots hairs and other features, air roots form in high oxygen soil or air. air roots that form in soil contain those hairs that help absorb more water which is good. They also help the soil stick to the roots stabilizing the plant. you could pot up later but you might break off some roots in the potting process which using energy trying to regrow them.

do you actually see roots coming out or do you see the white bumps? i just rooted 4 - 6 cutting this way.

The "bumps" are about a quarter inch long now, and there are four of five of them coming from each of two nodes.

I asked because I frequently read of people here potting as soon as the root initials, the "white bumps" appear. I'll go on and pot now, then put the plant in the growing box until it is established.

There are several quite dwarf cultivars, C. sericea 'Kelseyi' being one of the smallest........it seldom exceeds 3'. And just as there are wide variations in height/size of the various cultivars, there is a wide variation in the degree of stem color. FWIW, stem color tends to be less distinct during the growing season and with the most intense color in winter or while the plant is dormant. There are also shrub dogwood (C. sericea or alba) cultivars that have green, gold or orange stems - not all are red.

Thanks Rosey. I don't know if my JM twig is new or old growth. How can you tell old from new? It looks brown and woody except on the end where it's greener. It came from a well established tree with a thick trunk. So are you saying that I could add hormone to the water to up my chances of getting roots? Never even thought of that. OK, I'll try both. I tried the baggy method twice and had mold issues twice. I'm sure I must have done something wrong but those were my results. Last year I put 6-8" cuttings into pots of sphagnum moss with only one node showing. I had nearly 100% root but my health was bad and I lost a bunch of them when I could not care for them. This year I plan on rooting cuttings two ways. The larger more mature cuttings will be done the same way I did last year. The younger green cuttings I plan on putting in water and moving to sphagnum moss after I see root initials starting. I picked up 108 2.5" X 10" tree pots that are used for bench grafts to stick the cuttings in. I like sphagnum moss because mold hates it. I plan on leaving more nodes out of the soil this year. I find that when there is only one node above the soil the new leaves are more susceptible to disease. This is because the new leaves are so close to the soil its almost impossible to water without getting them wet. I realize having several nodes above the soil can pose a problem with dessication of the scion. To combat this I plan on spraying the portion of the scion thats above the soil with a mixture of Dormant Oil and Neem Oil. The dormant Oil will help with dessication and the Neem Oil should help with possible mold issues.

It’s algae and it’s because it’s in water. If you planted it in a pot in a suitable mix you wouldn’t get the problem. Alternatively, if you are determined to keep it in water, wash the roots thoroughly, clean out the jar and then change the water frequently in future.

It takes the right conditions for the roots to actually grow in the water, the water needs to be clean and have the right amount of oxygen in it. I will try this with an airstone in the jar. keep us updated with your progress.

That is enough to go ahead and plant in rooting medium and experiment with since it is a green twig from your own tree so not much to lose but learn a lot.

I have some swb's in my yard and my son came over and brought some 18 " fig cuttings and just stuck 5 in the soil in one of the buckets. A month later he checked them and said they had roots about 6 inches long.
