Marie does not like pots. I have had her twice and always meant to get her planted but she just declines while waiting. Other roses in pots right next to her do fine even if it is for a year or better.

Her blooms are not the long lasting type but have a delicious scent combined with the odd red tipped petal.

I had Marie, and had her in the ground for four years. That was about the number of blooms I got.

Mind, they were beautiful.
However . . .

I concluded that for one reason or another, she just did not like it here, and so she departed.
I'm not blaming Marie however.
Blanc de Vibert has also worn out its welcome. I was just probably never meant to grow those roses.

Thanks Lance, that is helpful information. I have found that some of my Teas don't like pots either. Devoniensis languished in a pot and when I put her in the ground she immediately put out new basals and made a nice bush. Do you think Marie could tolerate a pot long enough to establish a good root system, say for a few months, or should I just try putting her straight into the ground?

Blanc de Vibert didn't like it here and I didn't like Blanc de Vibert. Mine is gone, as well. There doesn't seem to be any entire class of rose that does well here (this includes China's and Tea's) but I have found some roses of all classes that will perform from pretty well to excellent in this climate. Just takes a lot of trial and error. I'm still trying to find a Gallica that will like it here. That might be a pipe dream.

Have you tried some of the found Gallica's, Carol? There is Canary Island..it was found in San Antonio..and it does real well for me. And Crimson Gallica is another, and Cramsoi des Alpes..I got them all from ARE

first picture is Crimson Gallica, the 2nd is Canary Island, and last is Cramsoi des Alpes.

If Gallicas don't perform for you, you might try some of the Hybrid Chinas -- the once-blooming crosses between Chinas and the European once-bloomers. Seems they can "make do" with a great deal less chill.

I'd like to know something about SDPN. Is it more yellow or cram colored. The pictures on HMF are confusing, maybe it's the seasons changing colors.

Cramsoi Picotee would never bloom for me, so I sent it to someone up North.

carolfm, have you tried Duchesse de Montebello, it's supposed to be believed to have a china background due to it's ability to produce remonant first generation offspring. It might prove better in your zone than a more "pure" gallica stock such as Mundi, Tuscany, etc.

Carla, SdPN is about 5 ft tall and 3 ft wide after 4 years in the ground. Not a monster Tea at all.

Hey Max, I haven't tried the Duchesse. Do you grow her? I'd love to hear how she does in a warm(er) weather garden, the blooms, scent, such as that.

It is Greg's (or whoever did it's write up for Vintage) and even more, whoever took that amazing shot of it on their site.

I had Marie last year form Amity heritage and it bloomed twice after I recieved it and it was my fault I stepped on her and then in trying to right her destroyed her. I also recieved Vintages email and also pushed the button but for 2, I also have my eye on several others but I know I cannot order them!

I am very dense. I still cannot figure it out if all the bands are on sale or only those that are priced $11.50. Next question: if I intend to get 8, should I name 6 and the 2 that are free as alternatives? Or should I name 8 alternatives? Since shipping is pretty expensive to the east cost, I do not want to end up like Wild rose - getting less but paying the max for shipping.

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Wll you could add that MJP has very disease prone foliage and has been exiled from my garden. But yeah, AG is all that and a piece of chocolate.

If you are going to order 6 you will lose the break in shipping that comes from ordering 8 as their boxes hold four plants. You won't get the alternatives unless one of your first choices is gone so you would only get 6 roses if your free ones were alternatives and you would not get 2 roses for 6. Is that clear. Or order 8 roses and they will charge you for 6. You'll still need to fill in alternatives. Shouldn't be hard to find a few alternatives with that list. Happy hunting.
