OK, talk to me about tomatoes in zone 8

I know, I know, I can WS them, but I'm having such a hard time believing it.

I really like to have my tomatoes in good time so I don't end up buying them all through the first half of summer. I'm not obsessive about starting them extra early (don't have the equipment anyway) but I really don't like the idea of losing a couple weeks I could be eating tomatoes.

It's so rainy and cold so late here, it seems ...

And yet I WS almost everything else successfully .. and it's such a dance setting out indoor-started tomatoes every year ...

Please, please tell me about your experiences in zone 8. When do you plant? When do they germinate? And do you find that you harvest later than you would with indoor-started or storebought plants?

This year I'm doing Stupice, Purple Russian and Amish Paste (55-70 days, 80 days and 85 days respectively). I don't care for grape or cherry tomatoes.

Thanks,

Kristin
