Roses for humid area without black-spot

I live in west-central Fla. near water and very humid, my roses get black-spot, and I wonder if someone in this area can advise me what roses are not as susceptible.. I am interested in Jule Child, Souvenir de la Malmaison, and St. Patrick but need information how they do here... thanks, saldut

The real truth is if it says hybrid it is going to get a fungus or disease of some form or anouther. There close but just not yet when it says disease hardy or resistant in its discription

saldut, my guess is you are going to find better answers for your particular climate by asking this question on the Antique Rose forum. You'll probably get pointed to China, Noisette, and Tea roses that have a reputation for tolerating your diseases & pests. They won't look like Hybrid Teas & Floribunda roses, but they will have their own beauty since they will still look like roses.

I bought a Cl. First Prize last year. It is too early to say much about bs resistance. I think it is known to be bs prone. So far mine is doing well, but I spray. The blooms were huge even on a small plant, and contrary to what I'd heard it just produced a powerfully fragrant one. Just a beautiful fragrance.

Black spot on roses - plant specific or site specific?

Tina, Don't know a lot about roses, but have dealt with blackspot. The house I moved into 5 yrs ago had a rosebush in front, and there are not gutters on front of house. It had blackspot, and the beetles ate the leaves until there was nothing left. I tried a few organic methods for getting rid of blackspot, and nothing worked- the site was the main factor. However, neighbor had blackspot on same kind of rosebush, and it was out in the open yard. I finally pulled up the rosebush, sad, but it was a losing battle and an eyesore. Thought I'd plant something in its place, something that liked moisture. I think I put black plastic on soil to try to "kill" any spores. Anyway, planted a spicebush there last fall. This year it has some kind of dx, probably fungal. Yeah, it could be the location. I wouldn't put another rose plant where that one was if I were you, but if you love roses there is a forum on here and maybe they can help you out. One day, when I own my own home, it will have gutters on the front and I will find a rose not susceptible to blackspot...... Yeah, in our humidity fungal dx is an issue, at least it's been for me. If your friend wants an easy care, floriferous, fresh-scented climber, I highly recommend Harlekin aka Kiss of Desire. My roses went through my medical issues with me & suffered along with me & weren't pruned, fed or bs managed for a good 18 months. Each rose looked like a train wreck, with a couple of exceptions, most notably Harlekin. Another rose I can recommend for easy care in hot humid climate is Grand Amore. Beautiful velvety red huge abundant blooms, barely any bs. All my roses are OR & I don't spray. For a big, fragrant, deep pink, you can't go wrong with Cynthia. Heat & humidity don't bother her and she doesn't mind a touch of bs. Cynthia Harlekin at beginning of 2nd year, planted from a band. Now in its 4th year. Harlekin has surpassed the trellis and is growing up around the light fixture.

I would just point out that neem oil has excellent fungicidal properties and is frequently recommended for good, organic rose care. It is suggested for use by the American Rose Society to control diseases like powdery mildew, black spot and can even have an impact on reducing the incidence of rust. One just needs to realize that it is only a preventative fungicide, not a curative, so of most benefit before the plant becomes highly infected. But it will limit the spread of any fungal disease to unaffected foliage. Just avoid spraying during the heat of the day - early morning or late evening. My current garden in the woods is too shady to grow many roses but when I did, I swore by Rose Defense by Green Light, which is clarified hydrophobic extract of neem oil. It did a great job of limiting any fungal issues as well as for common insect control. btw, it also works on insects other than just soft bodied ones by disrupting life cycle functions like eating, molting, mating and egg laying. It also acts as a repellent and has been effective against Japanese beetles. And it is 100% organic and OMRI approved. It was the only pesticide I used on my roses!!

Thank you for the advice, I am not sure where to obtain Noisette, China, Tea roses, here... they have to be grafted on Fortuniana rootstock to survive the soil here, we have microscopic worms Nematodes that will eat the roots of own-roots roses,, also the humid climate brings black-spot.... hopefully someone in this area of west central Fla. on the coast will see this and give me advice.... thanks, saldut

You will find Floridian rosarians on the Antique Rose forum who can help you out with getting grafted Noisette, China, & Tea roses. I don't know those sources because I don't have to think about that particular issue up here where I live north of Boston, but I know I've read many comments before there about Fortuniana rootstock.

Hi. I presently live in central Ohio in zone 5. But I lived in Florida for 10 years, in Tampa, moving out in 2006.
I had HT roses there. You can grow roses but they take a lot of work. All grafted roses need to be on Fortuniana root stock there, no exceptions. Roses also require spraying for insects and diseases, including black spot, on a regularly scheduled basis. As far as where to get them. I suggest going to a couple of reputable local nurseries and talking to the owners. There was a nursery that specialized in roses in Tampa, but I believe they are no longer in business. Do not buy your roses for a Big Box store, regardless of how tempting the prices are.
