Winterizing Don Juan Climbing rose

I live in south eastern Ontario, and planted my first climbing rose this spring. Its done remarkable, lots of blooms and has grown quite a bit. I read about trenching the canes and mulching which would work in the area we have it planted. The only part that I am concerned about is that the canes are very hard, and stiff and dont bend...I havent had to tie it to anything yet, it stands straight up on its own. If I try to bend the canes, I'm afraid they would break.

What would you suggest I do?
