White Lady Banks Just Put Out Buds

Hey everyone,

I was up in the Bay for a week, so I expected some change in the garden with no real care over that stretch. Lo and behold, the 20+ year old (older than me probably) Lady Banks here put out some buds!

Is this simply a very early bloom setting on, or is this rose finally showing a re blooming trait some experience in completely frostless climates? It's interesting irrespective.

My yellow Lady Banks has been known to show buds in Jan/Feb, but not this early. I would bet on a re-bloom.

i have the double white and it has no significant fragrance to my nose. *** Fragrance is subjective. I can sure smell R. banksia banksia! The smell lies floating in the air, when it is in full bloom. And when we caught the "Tombstone Rose" in full bloom, you open an old squeaky screen door and walk out into a blanket of violet scent. Yes. Fortuniana also has it. And while I won't say I love Fortuniana more than R. banksia banksia -- I do say I love it equally. Have you seen the big tree-climbing R. banksia normalis in the Sacramento City Cemetery? In full bloom, it is a Wonder For The Ages. :-) Jeri

I used to live on a property that had the double white form of 'Lady Banks' growing on the surrounding fences. It's scent is light in strength on an individual blossom, and of violets. On a warm day with high humidity the scent was more moderate in strength, around the bush. The smaller white flowered Banksiae, c. 1 inch wide, also has, to my nose a violet scent, but it is not as strong as the double form of white "Lady Banks", I smelled the smaller floral form two days ago to make sure of this. I love the double white form of "Lady Banks" best of all the Banksiae, not only for its' pristine white blooms that to my eyes, have the most elegant form of all the Banksiae, but also for its' very attractive dark green foliage, which makes it an attractive foliage plant as well, and it keeps its leaves late into the Autumn, where I live near San Francisco, Ca., Here the double white form of 'Lady Banks' repeats about 15% of its' Spring bloom, in Autumn. Such a beauty. Lux.

It gets enough light for persimmons to grow and fruit.... I am going to make a list of possible options for that fence line. Sorry to be obsessing about blocking out the neighbors. It is just that I have spent so many years cleaning up the lot just to "enjoy" them sitting in what seems like a tree fort over looking the garden fighting and yelling all day

Pat, budded means that the White Lady Banks is growing on rootstock, to which it was budded. I'm fairly sure in this case that the rootstock in question was 'Dr. Huey.' That's the most common rootstock. But the banksiaes don't NEED to be budded, and will do just fine on their own roots. I'd rather have had a plant grown from The Tombstone Rose because so old a plant is probably NOT infected with Rose Mosaic Virus -- which often hampers the vigor of affected roses. The "Tombstone Rose" which grows behind the old Rose Tree Inn and Museum in Tombstone, is white. It's "formal" name would be Rosa banksiae banksiae. Our yellow banksia -- R. banksia lutea -- blooms right through the year in our coastal climate -- only stopping in really hot weather.

Our R. banksia banksia, by contrast, will only very occasionally put out some small repeat.

Fortuniana scatters bloom here, right through the year. (Note that nurseries in SoCal have long sold Fortuniana as "White Lady Banks.")

Hooray for Lady Banks. What a graceful rose she is. Wouldn't you love to have a great rose like that named for you? Enjoy your flowers.

My White Lady Banks often puts on a small fall display. Seven Sisters always does. I think in our droughty summers the once bloomers go nearly dormant and revive to bloom in the fall.

Another rose to consider is 'Purezza,' which LOOKS like R. banksia banksia, but repeats through the year here.

Ours makes a bigger show for our neighbor than for us, so I took this from her front yard.

That's one of the reasons I love R. banksia banksia.

I love to walk down the shady path that goes by it, and smell that violet perfume.
