I'm growing mine free standing. It isn't a tall grower. I imagine though that it would be good on your trellis. I find it to be a good rebloomer and probably a little taller with some support.

I have this one Sandy. I don't really know the growth habit, but I want to try and grow it on an arbor...7 ft tall arbor. I won't be able to fan the canes out...now I wonder if it would grow on an arbor.

Thanks. Do you think it is shade tolerant at all? By shade tolerant I mean getting sun from about 1:30 in the afternoon until sunset (west side).

Since it doesn't sound like a huge bush, do you think it can get by with just one of the trellises?

I have it on an arbor in a bit shady position; shady in the afternoon. I do not think that is a problem but it is planted in a kind of raised bed and during this drought that bed was dry beyond belief. So the rose didn't do too much this year.
On the other side of the arbor is cl. Pele and that rose is huge so I should be careful that Pele could not suppress FotW. This year I wasn't a very good rose mom so I am happy that FotW is alive and time to time gave me some beautiful blooms.

I usually don not plant red roses in afternoon sun since I am afraid that would burn the petals but that does not mean that this rose cannot handle hot conditions in the afternoon; I just do not know the answer to that.

FOTW is huge for me. Has already reached the top of the trellis, about 10-feet tall and has gone about 2 feet over since we put it there. The other side, I cut back to make it bush out on one side and climb on the other.

Hmmm...sounds like maybe it CAN get big.

Ceterem, don't feel bad. I haven't been a very good rose mommy all summer long. Too hot. I am just starting to get out and "clean" my roses up. It's amazing how happy they look after they get a bit of attention.

It's generally been concluded (see the Vintage print catalog) that this study-name rose is Walter Brownell's climber 'Rhode Island Red'(1957). If so (& I tend to agree), it could get very large in the South. In moderate to cold climates, it is a 6-7' pillar-type rose.

The Combined Rose List also says that it is Rhode Island Red. I have 3 and like NE said they are pillars. By the way a very nice red flower.

Additional plus: very healthy foliage.

I have FOTW from Rogue Valley and Rhode Island Red from Vintage and they look like different roses.
RIR is still a baby and didn't bloom for me, so it could be just a mislabled rose, but the leaves are definitely very different from my FOTW. FOTW leaves are less round then the leaves on the roses I got from Vintage.

I wish you guys would quite with ths Fields of The Woods stuff. I am STILL waiting for two.

I have 3 sets of matched red climbers across the front of my house. Second season for them now, they are throwing long canes. The 4th position is minus roses because after MichaelAT's thread I had to have FOTW.

I'm glad they grow large, because they are going to be soo behind the rest of the crowd.

I have two Rhode Island Red climbers. I don't know whether they are the same rose as Fields of the Wood but these two are vigorous and have reached over 7 feet tall in one summer (got them in the Spring). Very, very healthy all summer and bloomed pretty much the entire summer. Whichever this rose is, I am in love with it!

I don't know for sure if Rhode Island Red and Fields of the Wood are the same rose, but if they are....I urge you to get it. RIR is a Walter Brownell rose, and I have fallen in love with these roses. This rose grew like crazy and never had even a speck of disease all summer. Even now, late as it is in the year, the leaves are still beautiful. Here's a few more closeups to tempt you further.....

Fields of the Woods is such a prettier name than Rhode Island Red. That reminds me of a chicken character in the earstwhile Pogo comic strip named Miss Sis Boombah from Providence.

Okay, monarda, but we had Rhode Island Reds when I was growing up and they were handsome chickens- reddish-brown, and the eggs were brown too, if I remember right. (Unfortunately, just as messy as every other chicken.) Brandy

Well, Miss Sis Boombah was handsome too, but one has to admit that it is more poetic to name a rose for woods and fields than for a chicken.

Allison, I was fortunate enough to get a virus free Fields Of The Wood from Malcolm Manners. It was left over from the Central Florida Heritage Rose Society rose sale, so I snatched it up at the last meeting. I also got a Reines Des Violettes (spelling?) that I am going to grow in the back yard. I may try to peg it, as it won't matter when it looks like a spider part of the year back there. There were a couple more roses I left behind that I should have bought. It didn't take long for someone else to get some of them.

I'm hoping they have another sale next year.

monarda....I just wanted to clarify that Rhode Island Red was NOT named after a chicken!!!
It was bred by Walter Brownell of Little Compton, Rhode Island....hence the name, Rhode Island Red.

I know, I know. I was joking. What I meant was that it could (in certain people -- namely me) conjure up a chicken, albeit a very handsome one. If only in contrast to this other "found rose" name, "Fields of the Woods," so much more evocative and in every way worthy of this truly gorgeous rose.

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden at one time had quite a collection of Brownell Roses, I think many of them probably equally worthy (and also with rather prosaic monikers, like, for example: Curly Pink, and Little Compton Creeper). There was a beautiful pink climber on an arch over the entrance to what used to be the childrens' garden that was almost always in flower even in the middle of July and August.

I have to figure it out how to get more moisture to that area or to this rose. Maybe I will dig in some soil mixed with dissolved polymer crystals. I want to see more blooms on my FOtW!
