I have a corner hedge of Pink Double Knock Outs and I love them as shrubs. It does not matter to me that they are not considered a true rose lovers cultivar. They are wonderful where I have them planted, They have stayed in bounds for the last 3 years since I have planted them, and they are the best shrubs I could have planted to outline this particular Northeast and Northwest lighting, and wind exposure corner. There is a 15 foot tall, maybe 5 inch wide trunked, and 9 foot wide canopied Shumard oak tree growing only about 12 feet South of them. They are even planted on a two foot tall berm to prevent them from suffering root rot from the neighbors water runoff that saturates that corner of our lot. In the Dry seasons this corner berm gets pretty dry, but still they did not die during our very long drought seasons a couple years ago. No other shrub Rose cultivar, I know of, could have survived as nicely or grown to perform and look so nice, as my Pink Double KO shurbs. Another Rose I love for growing in difficult locations is the 'Fairy' cultivar spreading rose. I planted 4 of these along the West facing edge of a 5 foot deep drainage ditch on a vacant, half acre residential lot where it took to much effort to consistantly supply needed supplimental watering. Still through the driest of years these Fairy roses have survived. They did not manage to spread and re-root at their growing tips as they grow, like they would have if kept watered properly; still each initially planted bush has remained alive, continued to establish well and even slowly fill in nicely. They even have managed to continuously bloomed each growing season long; until the first frost that often times has not arrived until late November during lots of recent years.

I am a new one to rose gardening but like more contradicting colors when I plant roses next to each other but that's just my own preferences. The blushing is pretty but it gives of a pink tent as well. if you are wanting your colors to blend a little, yes, those two would do well. I would like something more like a World War II Memorial Rose next to a double pink....maybe an orange too. LoL but I love the contrast. Have fun with your project! Joanneb, I too am a new gardener, never planted a thing outside in my life, and whaddya know, I started with a tree rose (in March 2009) hahaha! of all things... But really I urge you to take the advice of DublinBay and Mad_Gallica...Really reconsider whether you want to have so many KOs... In my opinion there are sooooo many more lovelier and just as hardy roses.... I don't like KO because they don't have character in the formation of their petals and shape and they don't have scent...Bees don't particularly seem to care for them either... I see KOs everywhere and if you choose KOs it would be like choosing a landscape that looks like a typical apartment complex...KOs are everywhere, on every single sign, even fast food restaurants have KOs outside, every apartment complex is plastered with them, hotel chains, etc. etc. I too as a newbie did too many same kind of roses. Two Special Occasion roses, 2 Lincolns, 2 Sutter's Gold... And I guarantee, once you get hooked on roses you will wish you had far more than just one kind... Roses are like MAGIC... there are so many prolific bloomers like KO but with much more loveliness and all kinds of color...For me the magic is also fragrance, so I say take your time and best! of all just like everyone says, visit a real rose garden...Stupid me didn't do that, so I've got too many same kinds even though I love them all except for boring Queen Elizabeth with zilch fragrance (when I first started roses as a newbie and didn't know any better)...It's just that now I've discovered so many more roses and because I only have very limited space, I am indeed "stuck" with what I originally selected.

Many people will say to you that you don't need to deadhead Knock Out roses. They are shrub roses and will drop their petals and clean themselves up pretty good. There are 9 double red KOs in our front flower bed that were there when we bought the house. Last year they only bloomed sporadically and didn't have what I'd call a nice flush. This year I fertilized and had a beautiful flush on all nine bushes. Then I tried an experiment. I deadheaded five of those bushes and not the other four. The five I deadheaded are covered in blooms with their second flush but the four I didn't deadhead have only a few blooms on them. Deadheading them is a pain but I will certainly deadhead them from now on.
