Why is my Fair Bianca "climbing"

Hello,
I have two Fair Bianca rose bushes planted at the front of my urban front garden. (The third one didn't make it through the first winter but I suspect the neighbourhood dogs had something to do with that). Both rose bushes are still blooming and one is filling out quite nicely but the other one is growing SO tall she looks to be a climber. I have a stake to keep one thick shoot in place. It is growing well past 4 foot tall. Do I dare prune that shoot back?

No. Don't cut it. Give it to ME!!

Seriously, I've never heard of that, but is the rose up against a trellis, or phone pole or something? Sometimes, if you put a bush rose next to something it could climb, it will do so.

I've seen Mutablilis climb all up and through a California Live Oak.

Do you have a picture of it? Sometimes roses create a climbing sport.

Olga, Cool, I'm in Laurel. IÂve been lurking and occasionally posting for years and noticed your postings. I didnÂt realize we were so close. I usually pay extra close attention to those in my climate. SDLM really fit the bill for me due to color, bloom form, and size. Buttercup yellows and oranges donÂt appeal to me. I tolerate Fragrant Cloud because itÂs a vigorous bloom machine but I think sometimes it hurts my eyes, and pinks are pretty easy to find. IÂve been concentrating on whites, near whites, apricots and true or dark reds (red is my favorite). Like you, IÂve also been trying to get away from spraying by spÂing my most BS prones. IÂve stopped bothering with winter protecting a long time ago. Another goal is to find less thorny ones. After getting rid of my prima donnas I think thorns are my next issue. However, if I can find a healthy SDLM IÂm willing to give it some TLC for a couple of years. My wife and I have friends and relatives in Rockville and Germantown and I can get away with a few things that wonÂt survive their winter. My chinas and my Francis Dubreuil still have all of their leaves. But maybe thatÂs normal, this is my first year with them. Besides, maybe I can take advantage of global warming. Thanks for the advice on the long caned roses. It makes sense, my BdeN didnÂt take off until I planted it in what happened to be a particularly well irrigated section. Thanks for the offer. Right now there's nothing much to look at. With the exception of BDeN they all winter killed at least above ground. BDeN would have been fine if not for the rodents. However, if you have any cuttings of SDLM (or BDeN) you are willing to part with IÂd be glad to stop by or meet somewhere or here. IÂm kind of hoping BehnkeÂs would carry it, but they havenÂt. BehnkeÂs seems to be the best overall deal with their huge selection. Dennis

Yeah, I'm not sure why it's been growing so slowly. It's been slow and steady though, and may have picked up lately. As of today, I would guess the volume is about half of that of a hen's egg. When it first bloomed, though, I wasn't even sure it was pollinated because it was growing so incredibly slowly. I wouldn't call our climate heat-deprived--were not at all like SF or Oakland/Berkeley. Our average high in the summer is something like 80 or 82 (we don't have a good nearby weather station). Last summer there were 5 periods (1 or more days) when the temperature topped 95 F. Over the time since the 'Frederick' bloomed, temps have been all over the place--60s, 70s and 80s. Today is forecast for 83. Cool compared to Sacramento or Stockton, but not to SF. I'll try to post in a week or two whether my fruit appears to be headed towards standard 'Frederick' size. You got me for a minute on Tecoma stans--I had never heard about it, so I looked it up. At first I worried that for the longest time I had been calling them Tabebuias instead of their correct names! I checked a picture--very similar flowers. But Tabebuias are in fact trees, and Tecoma is a bush. Moreover, they used to be classified in the same genus. So I don't feel as ignorant, but it just reminds me how little I know (especially about trees). The reason the carpenter bees visited our yard so much this year was because I was growing giant pumpkins (they make a LOT of pollen). The giant pumpkins were in the way of where 'Frederick' will go.

Growing roses from cuttings is a fine addiction and yours look very healthy. You spoke of rose sports and I have a Moon Shadow that is gorgeous but won't propagate at any method. I finally found a healthy rooting sucker or sport that is growing well but still small with thin canes but we'll see. My question for you is, I've kept my roses tall this year five plus because something is eating all the lower leaves, up to two ft, of the tops. It breaks my heart to see empty canes or flowers that were just ready to open totally gone. The backyard is at the base of a mountain covered with trees. In the front of the house all my roses are tall and flourishing .I'm always experimenting and in the kitchen windowsill have the base of a stalk of celery, some carrots and green onions all rooting well and begging to go outside in the dirt. Now if I put these in a large container close to the roses next to the gazebo which are being eaten, would you think the animals would get into the veggies instead of harming my roses. Poisons, systemics,animal be gone junk, electric devices, sour milk and Tabasco, nothing is working. These aren't big animals, just rats under my gazebo which love to thrive on poison and sometimes squirrels and rabbits.

I will try to answer all of your questions. totoro, I have not had a problem with Blackspot, but we do spray fungicides. Here in our overly humid climate, we would not have any leaves if we didn't Lisa Adams, Thanks for your kind words. Yes my Fair Bianca is in a container. Last spring I ordered two more own root plants of Fair Bianca from Roses Unlimited and they are in a 3 gallon pot and are doing fantastically well. I would not try to grow it in my roses beds because it stays so small. Monarda, I said it is hard to grow but not because it dies suddenly. It's just that is does not grow much and I don't get alot of new basils to keep it going. After a few years, it becomes a "one can wonder" but it still blooms. jo_pyeweed, I have had some bushes of Fair Bianca grafted and some on own roots. Last spring I ordered two more own root plants of Fair Bianca from Roses Unlimited and they are in a 3 gallon pot and are doing fantastically well, probably better than the grafted ones every did. A rose climbing up thru a tree makes sense because it is looking for light, but I don't think a rose would climb just because it next to a pole or trellis.

Thank you for your responses! I just took a photo right now and uploaded. It's not close enough to the white fence to climb around as there are other plants there. I put a stake beside the rose because I didn't want it to flop over.

YAY!!!!! This is RARE RARE RARE. We all want a copy!

FB is one of those roses that is so hard to get it to grow and sometimes dies away under the best conditions. If I cut my canes, sometimes they slowly die to the ground from where I cut them. And the flowers are so beautiful that its maddening when your plant is dwindling away as you are trying to get it to grow. If you have a climbing branch, please let it grow and see if you have a rare climbing sport. I would like a climbing version of FB and I'm sure many others would too. You may have a gift from heaven here.

I'm with HoovB.

Even if it doesn't turn out to be a CLIMBING sport -- it might could turn out to be a REALLY VIGOROUS sport. Either would be just fine.

Either way, EYE sure want one!

Mira, if you want to you can buy (or build) a free-standing support for this rose to grow on. That is what we did when we did not realize that Graham Thomas was a climbing rose in our climate.

They are usually called "obelisks" in catalogues or if you are looking on the web. I have bought a 5 ft tall metal one that was about 12 inches in diameter for less than $70. Or, you can do what my DH did and build one out of metal or wood.

A tripod of 8' (maybe even 6') metal stakes is a cheap and easy way to support a rose that is already in place.

Do let us know next year how this plant is behaving. People are not exaggerating about what a puny grower FB is in most gardens. But the flower is sensationally good.

Thanks for those suggestions, an obelisk would actually look kind of pretty but I will get something else for now just in case it's a one-off.

I was worried about this same rosebush earlier this summer and had convinced myself that it suffered from a RV because of the massively thick red shoots that were growing. I posting a pic here but then promptly rushed outside to remove the offending shoots. Only later, when I went back online, was I informed by the other posters that my photo showed a perfectly healthy plant:(

Without pouring cold water on the climbing thing, it does seem( with my rubbish eyesight) like it is only 1 cane and there is a bit of apical dominance going on. I would definitely be cutting this back next spring.
