Drought helping me kill weeds and Bermuda grass
Comments (18)It seems that there are many recommendations for eradication. The one that worked for me, and allows me to plant immediately - dig it up, filter the stolens out, and plant. Bermuda can grow deep, survive drought and neglect. I overhauled a very large front yard with a simple tool - a square shovel (called an Irish shovel, don't know why)after enough rain to soften the soil. My lot is impenetrable ancient marine terrace of silt, clay and sand. It's fairly easy to sift the stolens from the dirt via a wire mesh on a frame that fits a wheel barrow, or you can simply throw out the grass layer. Yes, you can do solarization, you can do round-up, you can do rototilling for however long it takes... but imho the prep is everything. Fighting resprouting grass is miserable, neverending work. Spend the time up front sifting the bermuda grass out and spend zero weeding time fighting it later. My neighbor did not bother to remove the bermuda, and it comes back every year, even with mulch. Many of the previous posts are spot on - rototilling will not eliminate bermuda. The comment of 'tilling destroys the soil structure' is highly subjective to the type of soil. If I had not completely turned and amended my garden then nothing would grow. It would be helpful if you posted your soil type or did a 'jar test' so that others can make recommendations. Hope this helps ... diana...See MoreGetting rid of Bermuda Grass
Comments (12)I have bermuda that survives everything! Landscape cloth-that was sure fun to try to remove it, with the bermuda growing thru it everywhere. Black plastic? Four years--I removed it---white bermuda--heading for the edges of the plastic! Roundup? gave it a belly ache for a week, revived-sprayed again--didnt phase it the second time. I did use the Poast on a bed that had various flowers--all my poppies, Iris, clematis--tryed it over the top, as it said--forgot it--month later--IT WAS DEAD-and didnt harm flowers. But--I'd still be cautious around flowers. Glenda, I love the corn gluten meal--my onions didnt have a weed for 3 months--which is when I was supposed to have re-applied it. Everyone remember tho--don't put it where you WANT seeds to come up. Worse of all?? my horses don't even like it!...See MoreRaised Bed over Bermuda. Should I kill/till/remove/smother it???

Comments (5)Hi Paul, I also have a bermuda lawn problem and the only solution for me (I've tried many) was to put plastic under the box and cut holes for drainage in the plastic. It has to extend out from the box at least 2 inches. I usually lay down cardboard in the box to absorb most of the excess water. I also have tree roots and this helps. The weed cloth didn't work for very long, but it's 2 years now without a problem using the plastic. Hope this helps. Kath...See Morealabamanicole
