I have seen Mme. Alfred Carriere grown much like that. And I have NO clue how they do that.

Many climbing hybrid teas grow like that. And my guess is using eye hooks screwed into the house at various points, then using some kind of wire or something to tie the canes to them.

There are either nails, screws or Tumax mounts attached to the house eaves, to which the rose is tied with something like rope, cord or plant tape. It can easily be done and is sometimes easier than using a trellis. Word of warning, repainting the house or any other roof/siding repairs are a real WITCH with a thorny rose attached to it.

Choose wisely...if you want a repeat bloomer, realize you aren't going to easily be able to dead head the spent flowers so make sure they either fall cleanly or the resulting hips won't look unsightly to you or otherwise reduce the rebloom. It's best to situate it where you can frequently blow out the debris, dead petals, spider webs (and mites) with a hose without fouling up your nice, clean windows. Particularly this time of the year when every spider in the universe is building more than its fair share of webs all over the place. Also, try not to put this on the southern or western sides of the house where there is going to be extreme, intense heat at the worst times of the year. Eastern exposure is going to be the most successful in most of the hotter parts of the country where this type of situation can work. If you're in REALLY hot zones, it will be a struggle. Been there and done it too many times for clients. Really pretty, but very labor intensive in really hot climates. Kim

I recently saw something like that near the Oregon coast. The lady who owned the bed & breakfast where we stayed explained that she used thr "xmas string light attachment thigmagigs"..We use them to string lights along the eves during the holidays. So should Big Mac get that big...we'll give it a try.

I have 8 climbing roses growing 1 to 3 stories up my house on the Southern and Eastern side (in Sacramento you might take Kim's advice and only use the Eastern side). The climbing hybrid teas & one hybrid gigantica (Belle Portugaise) end up with the structure in your picture - bare long canes at the bottom, and then bushy bloom at the top where the canes are horizontal. The climbing Cecile Bruner, the banksie lutea, and the hybrid winchurana Sombrieul are all bushy over 100% of themselves, and are more work and need to be seriously pruned at least once a year to keep them on the house - they get so heavy that they want to fall over and explore the rest of the garden, the driveway, the neighbor's yard, etc...

Anyway, I would highly recommend trying it - the tie up possibilities are as stated above, and if you use a climbing hybrid tea they work fine. For the much heavier roses, my DH has installed metal plates and horse hitching rings.

When we had our house painted we took all 8 of these roses down to about 8 feet, pulled them away from the house, and wrapped them in burlap. By the time the painting scaffolding came down 5 weeks later, they were sending new shoots out through the burlap! Here is a picture of my banksie lutea about 12 months later - it has only achieved 2 stories in height, not back to three yet. You can see how bushy it gets.

Gorgeous Jackie! Thank you! Banksiae is a perfect choice for several reasons. It's thornless, removing that issue. It is sterile (or nearly so) eliminating dead heading. You can literally shear it with hedge trimmers to keep it thinned, dense and bushy against the wall. Gardeners do it here to keep them shaped to shrubs in many communities. Most insects and vermin don't recognize them as "roses" so they leave them alone. The only disease issue I've ever seen on them is mildew, which causes a lot of leaf drop, but the plants remain full and green. Spider mites may become an issue on a hot wall, but cleaning the plant out regularly with a strong hose stream can take care of most of these.

The flowers are small and dense enough that you aren't left with bare canes, dried hips and no coverage as you can be with larger flowered types. Other than occasional shearing and blasting it out with a hose, you really shouldn't have a lot of maintenance with a Banksiae for that use. You also know they are sufficiently vigorous own root (and available) to achieve enormous proportions in a realtively short time so there are no root stock sucker issues, nor should it require many years to provide the desired results. You know, you could even use 'Purezza,' or maybe "Vina Banksia," (if they are not the same) and get some repeat, through the year.

We planted a Yellow Lady Banks (R. banksia lutea) like Jackie's -- part of a "passalong" plant of it -- thinking it would tumble along our 6-ft board fence. It did that, then leaped the fence, and scrambled to the top of a pair of ambitious ficus trees.

I have two roses on either side of the front of my large shed that I do this with. I put up strips of hardware cloth that has big, big open holes with a few nails. I bent it a little so that I have kind of a triangle that I can stick shorter canes through to hold the rose on. I did secure a main cane or two with soft wire to make sure the roses are up there good.

On the side where I have to get near to pick herbs and veggies, I have Zeffy (thornless). On the other side, I have Queen of the Prairies (very thorny but so pretty).

What I like about the hardware cloth is that I don't have to get up on a ladder often to keep the roses neat. I use a rake end or long stick to guide wayward shoots to catch the nearest wire part.

Thorny roses are easier, because they catch a lot easier. They are painful, though, lol :)

I tried this with a Belle Portugaise. Six + years in, I gave up and dug it out. You have to love ladders and like to get mauled while tying the rose up. The big canes want to go where they want to go and you wrestle them into position. I used big bolts with u shaped hardware with the bolts screwing through the Us. I doubt I could have kept up with Belle anyway. She makes an awful lot of growth in a year. If I tried it again, I would put her on a pergola or shade house the way Descanso or LA Arboretum does. I do love the pink flowers smiling down.

I am much happier now with a Blush Boursault doing the same thing on a smaller scale on my little shed. That rose is a thornless joy.

We just bought a long-handled pruner for this kind of situation. It's a useful adjunct to ladders.
