Good Bugs or Bad Bugs

Or maybe its just one bug?

Can anyone identify these two bugs for me and tell me if they are beneficial bugs or if they will eat my roses?? The first bug is about 2 inches long and the second about 1.5 long. I was thinking the second one might be the casing the first one popped out of, it hasn't moved all day. The first one is gone and now I am worried it might be on my roses somewhere having dinner. LOL

Cicada, possibly Tibicen canicularis.

Yep. It's that time of year. I've not seen a cicada eat roses, but that doesn't mean that they won't.

It looks kinda' like an immature wheel bug which is a good bug, except it doesn't have much of an up-turned abdomen. It's so hard to tell the immature wheel bugs and other assassin bugs from the immature leaf footed bug. There's got to be a way to tell them apart. What do some of you think? If no one on here can say try posting the picture on the Insect Forum.

I found a survey on the Smithsonian Web page and reported it. Not sure if it adds to the survey or not. If they are interested, I guess they will contact me... In a video on that site, they claim the easiest way to kill it is to freeze it. Since we have an extremely late frost, maybe they propagated and will now be killed off naturally but I wonder how many made it into my house already.

No idea. I would return to the nurseries and show them exactly what you are talking about. Normally, if I do not observe them causing damage for several minutes, I then ignore them. Yeah, I know; hee hee hee. not a very scientific approach but oh well..... Like I said before, go back to the nurseries ad show them. If you find out this way, post an update.

When you see them that is the adult form. They do not eat, they are just around to breed and make more little ones. The little ones eat roots and other plant matter.

Yep, cicadas. That's the skin that is left behind after it crawls out of the ground and molts, after spending 13 to 17 years there! The adults don't even have mouths. The male will sing to attract a mate, then the females will cut slits in small tree/bush twigs and lay their eggs. After the eggs hatch, the little larvae burrow down into the ground and suck on tree roots for another 17 years.

Thanks everyone for your replies. 13 - 17 years??!! Wow! That is so interesting, I did knock off the casing (skin) and it was hollow inside, it just crushed into dust.
