Blackspot & Japanese Beetles - How to prevent?
Comments (9)Actually it's the opposite, blackspot is very easy to prevent. You need to use Bayer Advanced Disease Control, a fungicide. Make sure you get this one and not an 'all in one' product from Bayer. It is a concentrate that you mix with water and spray on the roses. You should spray as soon as they are fully leafed out. Spray in the morning before the sun is high and when your roses are still moist from dew. The Bayer is systematic, so as soon as it dries (about an hour) it's been absorbed by the plant and even if it rains, it will work. You only need to spray every 2-3 weeks, depending on the weather. In my zone, when it gets very hot and dry (July/August) I can go 4 weeks. But you have to resume again in late August/September, that's when I find the worst BS conditions (BS survives better in cooler temperatures). I spray up until the first hard frost and then once or twice in the winter. If you do this you will eliminate blackspot. Japanese Beetles there is not much you can do to prevent them. You can try treating your lawn with Milky Spore or antoher grub treatment, but JBs can easily fly in from neighboring yards. I used to have swarms of them and then I would spray them with insecticide. But the past two years, we haven't had that many, so I just did the pick them off and drop them in soapy water routine....See MorePreventing Japanese Beetles
Comments (80)I fortunately have seen very few JBs this year, although other nasties have been munching on my rose buds. I think the culprits are grasshoppers and katydids. I recently planted roses and killed every grub that I dug up. It has been dry here. I don't know if this helps, although it's not good for my gardens or our well. I also don't have a lawn, just perennial/rose beds and gravel paths. I'm hoping that maybe the grubs aren't finding enough to eat since no expanse of lawn roots for them to feed on. A question about Milky Spore. Can it be used in garden beds or is it only for use with lawns? I'm not sure how the nematode is spread. Sharon...See MoreHelp! Preventing June Beetles from Devouring Basil
Comments (3)Milky spore worked for us in CT against Japanese Beetles, but it takes a year or two to really be useful.... then the bugs come in from another yard.... It doesn't work real well unless the whole community/neighborhood does it. As an immediate step I'd use some sort of screening around them. I had a neighbor in CT who, oddly enough, grew basil for Pesto that she sold to various stores for re-sale. She grew hers in large, open, screened "cupboards". Perhaps the beetles were why she did this... I do know it was against bugs....See MoreJapanese Beetles & Blackspot - How to prevent?
Comments (2)To carry kimmsr's thoughts further: 1) ALWAYS water at the soil line and 2) properly prune the roses to maximize air circulation through the plant. You can view tutorials by googling 'pruning roses.' These practices will help control blackspot, JB that's another problem which can be controlled. Google 'integrated pest management' for help....See Moreathenainwi
