is it too early to plant my bananna plants ?

With the warm weather, I am getting the itchy fingers to plant my indoor potted bananna plants outdoors which is my plans for spring. I am eager to get a head start on my bananna's.Would I be making a mistake ? Should I hold off until April ?

Do you remember Friday, March 13, 1993? We had a 12 inch snow and a HARD freeze that night below degrees. If you plant now and the ground is still crumbly and soft from planting, the ground may freeze too easy where it is disturbed. I would wait until April 1. The chances of a hard freeze after APril 1 is almost non-existent. The chances of a frost are low but you can cover and protect the banana from a frost.

I would advise even more caution than my friend Terry & wait till mid to late May at the earliest. If you plant bananas any earlier, you run the risk of them rotting in the cold soil, especially if you make the mistake of over-watering. I know its always said that bananas love water & fertilizer, but that's only true when the soil warms up & we have daily high temps in the 80s & 90s . Water & feed too soon & you'll have dead bananas. Trust me they're much better off in pots untill the ground warms up. Patience, patience!

Masbustelo, if I plant peas too early here they just rot. Our soil tends to be both cold and waterlogged for weeks in early spring. I guess it's drier where you are stuffradio; WCS's mid-Feb recommendation usually doesn't work for me, and as for "as soon as the ground can be worked" .... baloney! Maybe in Victoria or the lower mainland but apparently local conditions trump all. I have been pre-sprouting successfully for a couple of years (have to plant them gently!) but I don't know for sure that I'm getting any benefit; maybe those years they'd have sprouted in the ground anyway. I suppose I could run some side-by-side week-by-week tests but a) I'm too lazy/disorganised and b) we eat too many fresh peas so there's no big surplus of seed left to play with. Good advice above. Here's another choice. I'm in Zone 6 and have often planted bareroot roses in the 3rd and 4th weeks of March. Admittedly those winters weren't as cold and crazy as this winter has been, but I notice already that parts of the garden are quite diggable, and I transplanted a rose last week to a new spot in the garden--worked out fine! So my advice would be to soak the roses in water, keep them in a cooller place (unheated garage is good) with little or no sunshine, change the water each week, and when you encounter a diggable day in the garden in the next week or two, go ahead and plant them. Sultry, little by little I am getting my garden full of the veggies we like to eat. Eggplants are from a last season, new tomato seedlings for the fall, pole beans, cucumbers, summer squash, a big variety of mild Oriental greens, leaf lettuce, a different kale varieties. My poor bananas are still outdoors in the ground with their little bubblewrap and flannel sheet jackets on them.
I think their little feet are doing fine in some deep pine straw mulching. Even the gigantic alocasia/colocasias are
beginning to put out some greenery, but they still have their wrappers on too. These things are on the south side
of our yard, up against a privacy fence. I'm hoping this
week sees the worst done with. But I know one more big cold snap can happen, even here in Mobile.
