Any Experience With Ash Wednesday

I was raised Catholic, but I'm talking about the German rose Ash Wednesday, or otherwise known as Aschermittwoch. I am captivated by the gray tones of this rose. I think it could blend well with the more muted tones I love. It is not quite an antique, as it is from the fifties. Though the 1950's is an era I love for the movies, clothes and people seemed to have good manners, which were important in society back then and people always looked well-groomed. Just had to put that out there. :)

Getting back to the subject of this rose, let me know about your experience with this one.

It is a cross between rosa eglanteria and Ballet, a hybrid tea. I chose it due to the eglanteria parent, which is pretty cold hardy here. It was bred by Kordes, who field tested his roses for disease resistance and cold hardiness. Here it is so far about 3 feet high and of lovely form in bloom.
Its flowers remind you of hybrid teas and old garden roses at once. It could be a lot bigger in your climate.
It has a mild scent. It is great to sit and look at from a few feet away, due to its great shape and flowers.
It blooms once a year here. I hate to recommend anything to people in your climate, but that is a wonderful rose for me. One drawback is the rose fades to white and becomes a muddle when it ages.

Like kahlah my experience is unlikely to apply to your climate. I'm a died-in-wool fan of K's having roughly half of my 100 or so roses from Kordes. So it is somewhat hard for me to bad mouth one of his roses. But I find Ashermittwoch a weak rose. Mine is only 4' tall, quite short for a climber and bloomed very little. I will however keep it awhile longer as it does have nice flowers and mose roses for me take their time getting going.

Another Kordes that a smilar color is Magenta. A pale lavender and wondcrful form and fragrance. Also a repeater as it is a Floribunda. Another one that I can't grow as I've tried twice without any luck. Might do well for you. Available from several nurseries here.

Thanks for the replies! The Ash is becoming plentiful in our old neighborhood (started about 1958). The trees have gotten large and dangerous due to rotted forks (from holding water. Two of three 18-24Ã¢ÂÂ dia limbs have blown off the 36Ã¢ÂÂ+ dia tree during the last two fronts. I have reported some to the City when the limbs extend over the street and can go at any time. With the documented picture and address The City usually gets on it quick (cutting it back past the streetÃ¢ÂÂs easement). My point is that IÃ¢ÂÂm not the first to see the danger (from the home owners to many City Employees traveling by daily). I have had good apple flavored meats here from Restaurants. Most Homeowners and BBQ Businesses go with our strong supply of Mesquite, Pecan, Hickory for flavors and Live Oak, Black Jack Oak, for heat (vs Red Oak and Post Oak's bitter flavor). All woods are seasoned a year, except some know how to use a small piece of green Hickory (Ã¢ÂÂthe last 30-45Ã¢ÂÂ minutes of the smoking).

Being on the pessimistic side, I think I might start thinking about replacement trees. If, like me, you are frugal, then starting your own from seed, or digging up seedlings, might be a way to go. If you grow your own, and keep potting them on into larger pots, you can have 15-gal. root systems, and 6-12' trees at least 4, maybe 5 years, down the road, which seems to be about when you will know if your insecticide/protection program is working or not. The size will be NOTHING like the magnificent ashes you now have growing, but it will be a start in providing it to you again.... Of course, if you can afford it, you CAN buy very large trees as replacements, but if you have read through old posts, you realize that the establishment period for large trees is long, and takes much care - the smaller trees would probably catch up to the bigger ones at the end of 3-6 years, and cost a LOT less, both in money and in effort/water/etc.. I hope you do succeed in your endeavors - and if you do end up with healthy ashes, and no need for your "little" trees, then I am sure you can gift them to someone, even to your town for park plantings.

the peeps who interpreted what i meant to say were correct ... additionally though... of all the diversity out there.. why do you want to bang your head on the brick wall called ash ... just before EAB came along.. in 2000 .... i invested in 6 autumn purple ash at 40$ each ... and spent ten years watching them grow wonderfully .... i just finished removing the last of them last spring .. nothing more disappointing than watching your investment.. and emotional attachment die to the vermin ... and also had some other conservation dist. ash [in other words.. green and white] and they succumbed before the other ... contrary to claims that one version was bug proof .... so i asked... why.. why.. why????? you cant find anything other than an ash or an oak???? heck.. i would plant a maple before i would plant an ash ... and i hate maple.. lol ... perhaps a new post on what we would recommend beyond ash.. would give you a multitude of ideas other than ash ... since you have so many oaks .... on the other hand.. if you are talking about investing a few bucks.. and are the experimenting type.. and have no qualms about chainsawing them when the bug hits.. go for it .... which as a farm owner you probably are.. as compared to those who get all emotionally attached to the plant babes, and who have a coronary killing a bug infested tree ....... what the heck ... worse thing that happens is you find out an ash is an ash ..... and EAB is indiscriminate .... good luck ken ps: as an aside.. is it possible that it could be against the law to plant ash.. since so many states are destroying them????? i know its a crime to cross state lines with cut ash.. could it be a crime to plant????

In Newhall, CA, Zone 9b (91321), it had mildew issues and flowered lightly. The buds were gray lavender, opening to pale lavender gray, fading white very quickly in the intense sun. I grew it because I HAD to grow every possible gray, green and brown rose. I passed it along to someone who HAD to have it even more than I did. Kim

Here in California it is a big rose rambling on my fence. The color is beautiful. It does get black spot. I'm sure you must know it is a once bloomer.

Thank you Kaylah, Jim and Mendocino Rose! I appreciate the comments on this rose. I know it is a once bloomer for the most part, but for where I am thinking of putting it, a once bloomer will suffice. I love it's antique-like color.
