My 'Veilchenblau' MUST get planted...but it's in a pulp pot!

Need advice please: my poor, poor 'Veilchenblau' has been listing away all summer, waiting to get planted in the ground. The garden has not been ready, but now it is. Since I've never planted a rose that's been in one of those paper/pulp pots before, I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. So I thought I'd come here and ask the *experts*! Please tell me exactly how you'd plant this rambler to get it to succeed. My rose is not vigorous at the moment although it does have nice green leafage - and it did have a few flowers on it this summer. Here's a link that describes this rose.

Pulp pots are a mixed blessing. Roots do stick to the sides after they've been in the pot for awhile, so taking the pulp pot off after a growing period can cause a problem. Since your plant is weak, I would try to disturb the roots as little as possible, but at the same time make a route for them to escape the pulp pot once in the ground. Take a knife and make a few shallow slices down the side (only the depth of the pot thickness) and then plant the whole thing. The pot eventually will decompose.

Also be sure to take the upper edge of the pulp pot -- the part that is above the soil line -- and cut it off. If left as a rim out of soil, it will wick moisture out of the ground, and dry out the roots, which is not a good thing.

First soak the pot with the rose bush in it in a bucket of water until the whole pot is completely saturated. This may take a day or two. Have the planting hole prepared and before you plant the potted bush, poke lots of holes in the sides and bottom of the pot. I use a large screwdriver. The holes give more area for the organisms that decompose the pot to work on. They also provide a place for the roots to grow out of into the surrounding soil. Done this way, the pot should decompose in a year or less. If not soaked, the pot could keep the roots contained and not break down for years.
Make sure you do as Kathy said and remove the portion of pot above the soil line or at least bury it deep enough so it's below the soil line to prevent water wicking.
This process can be messy but your rose bush will grow much better and will not suffer any transplant shock or stress due to the loss of soil or feeder roots if you lose soil when planting.
Planting biodegradable pots this way has been quite successful for me.

I've had good luck with attracting butterflies with Tithonia (Mexican sunflower), but you need to plant it in groups of 3 or more (and each plant takes up a lot of space (and the plants have a strong orange,but aren't all that beautiful)). Zinnias will probably bring some b-flies as well. Both butterfly bushes (a shrub) and butterfly weed are aptly named, but I don't know if they'll grow in your area. I rarely feed hummingbirds with feeders any more, but have found the following attracts them: Trumpet Vine Coral Honeysuckle Scarlet Runner vines Salvia (sometimes) Cardinal flower Impomopsis I purposely brought jewelweed to my property as it is supposed to be a good hummingbird plant. It may be, but I have never seen a hummingbird approach one. It is a rampant self-seeder, and not that pretty of a plant (though the leaves are neat). The one mitigating factor is it is probably the easiest weed in the world to pull. As to your other questions: I'm not sure what a pulp pot is exactly. As to dill, I suspect you're going to see it go to seed, and then die. But dill often self-seeds. Parsley? I do know its technically a biennial. I'd give it a try unless someone has better info.

Hi Mangodog, IF you can find the Maha Chinook anywhere else, please let me know. As far as being able to tell you that I have ate specific varieties of mango, I cannot do that but I can tell you that out of what I have had here in my local groery stores(usually pretty crappy!), Florida(pretty darn good!) and Puerto Rico(very good fruits!) the Maha fruit was probobly in the top 2 of my mango tastings. I wish I had neighbors that loved mango! I did a double take about 5 years ago when I saw mango trees at a nursery about 45 minutes away. That was one time but I am working on it. They should be bringing my Carrie mango up from this tropical fruit expo in Florida. I can't wait! Andrew

I finally got to see it today too, Kathy! The look of the pulp reminded me of Celluclay, but she had a nicer clay-like body to it and her surface was not as bumpy, but more like a pleasing sandstone texture. I loved her use of twigs and copper pipe embedded in the forms. What an inspiring show! I even liked Dee Gruenig's segment using resists to create images on the compressed stamping sponge. So which is cheaper Braun or Thunderstick? Any other similar products? Guess this non-cook needs to head to the small appliance department, lol!

Years ago I saw a rose growing with total abandon in spring near a friend's home. The woman owing the property was very rude, wouldn't allow a cutting, even though the rose was growing along a fenceline, was absolutely huge, and resplendent in its purple majesty. I was enchanted! After a good bit of searching, I finally found out what the rose was. I recently bought a small band - it is now in a larger pot and growing well. I hope to duplicate that beautiful look of those exquisite lavender/purple flowers. I haven't seen Perennial Blue, but I can only imagine one day when my magnificent Vielchenblau comes into full bloom in spring and thrills me like it did those many years ago. Don't know another rose that could match the color. Why not get both? Judith

I take a pruning saw and cut off the bottom of the pot, then slice down one side just the depth of the side of the pot but all the way top to bottom.
Throw away the piece from the bottom then place the whole thing in the planting hole.
The slice you made down the side of the pot will allow you to remove the rest of the pot. Then gently fill in the void around the sides of the pot with dirt and water.
The pot is gone and you disturb few roots.
I should have started by saying to dig a hole about two inches bigger than the pot all the way around. Test this by lowering the pot into the hole for a trial run.
It works for me and if you're careful the plantwon't even know it's been moved.
