Facebook Friends

I de-activated my Facebook account tonight after spending a few months as a "member" and only a few minutes getting acquainted with it's features.

I never could figure out exactly how it worked, but was very uncomfortable with how it spread information so quickly to millions of people. It freaked me out to be contacted by hundreds of people "it" said I "knew", but I DIDN'T! And a few I did, and it was good to hear from them; ya;ll know who you are: Jan, Rosemary, Jill, Wayne, Todd, Arlene, etc., he!!, I can't remember ALL the names it said I "knew"! LOL!

It's a very useful tool in certain situations, it's just not for me. So I hope none of you are offended. If you are just contact me by the "old school" way - email.

Now I've got to get back to my football. ROLL TIDE!!!!!

I'm with you, Nelson. I joined Facebook a couple of years ago after receiving a bunch of 'invitations' after a high school reunion (which I did not attend). I didn't like it and dropped the account after several months.

My husband has an account and seems to enjoy the heck out of it.

Nelson, I agree. It's a little too "public" for my liking, also.

BTW: do you know if Joseph is going to be open this year? Stopped by there two or three times last summer but never saw him around.

I know more people who love Facebook than feel about it as I do. If it works for you - great! I did indulge myself in it for quite some time, but since I've distanced myself I find that I resent the notion that it's something that suits all of us. I blame the media and Corporate America in general. If I want to know more about a product, I'm encouraged to "Like" the manufacturer on Facebook. If I want more news from my local sources, I'm encouraged to "check out our Facebook page for more info." It's so much more than just a widely used social outlet - there's a thinly veiled insistence that we assimilate or be left out. And I don't take well to anyone even so much as hinting that I assimilate. ;-) Facebook brought me together with a large number of people from my past, and in most cases it became evident to me quickly why we parted ways and our relationship was left in the past. A couple of people were even downright nasty; one man that I'd dated very briefly in high school made a blatantly homophobic comment when I said something on my page in support of my gay cousin's rights (or lack thereof, I should say). For me, Facebook was largely a lesson in how life moves on and why. Too, when I found msyelf taking photos with the thought of the subject matter being something cool to post on Facebook, I knew it was past time to call it quits.

He's on ignore. Nothing real important shows up if you type my name. Lindy - I didn't know if you sent a message the person had access to seeing you page. Interesting. Both my myspace and facebook are all private. I find it interesting if a friend of mine comments on someone else's photo that that person isn't on my friend list, I can still click on that nonfriend's pic. It will show up along the side saying "so and so commented on so and so's photo". You can go through that person's full album. I'm sure there's settings but I every time I think I have them figured out someone tags me or something. I give up. I don't like that people can tag me in a photo. I thought I changed the settings so it couldn't be done but my aunt had some real doozie pics of me she tagged and then anyone on your list gets to see them. I mean I looked horrible in these photos. Wowzers. I deleted them but I'm sure they were already seen!! As far as the friend request thing, I thought you actually had to hit "friend request" . FB is always showing friend suggestions or people you might know but I would have to click on them to actually have them as a "friend".. Haha if you don't have a FB account and are reading all this you probably think we don't have lives! Cooper - Ha my Dad and two Aunts have FB. Dad recently wrote something all gushy parent like on my wall. "I'm very proud of you..blah, blah.." :) He even throws some nick names around that I'd rather other people not know. Ah, well. While we're admitting to FB, how many of you guys take the quizzes? Or take the time to do the cow farm thing or mafia wars. I don't understand the point of either but my sister and bil do the farm thing at times. lol Once in a blue moon I'll take a quiz.

Why have you tolerated this apparently-repeated behavior? You're not looking real good yourself right now as a woman, wife, or mother. "He used to call me up from the bar and tell me how much he loves me and that he's sitting there telling his friends about his wife and how much he loves me." And you tolerated that, too? Astonishing! "Does anyone have any advice? I don't know what to do." Of course you do. You just haven't allowed yourself freedom from your emotions sufficiently to think clearly about it. Hopes and wishes aren't going to handle this. You've got a real sleaze on your hands. For your children, if not yourself, get out of there. Do it yesterday. "I'm just devastated." And you have been for a while. Get over it. Things are as they are. Wishing they were different hasn't accomplished anything and never will. No sense wallowing in this hopelessness. It's a very real problem requiring a very rational decision. Your emotion and self-pity are obstructions to the actions required. Put them on the shelf, gird you loins, and do what needs to be done. In addition to getting free of this jerk, it appears to me you've got some work to do on yourself.

You and daughter and families will be pleased to hear of what injuries the boy suffered and how he's doing ... and, as others have said, we are pleased to hear how things are going with him. Is there any news as to whether it is known who caused the boy's injuries and anything of the circumstances? ole joyful

Unfortunately, Joseph decided to close "Hazel's". His son now occupies the house and takes care of the property; Joseph took the majority of his plants, Peanut and Bull's Eye, and moved in with his mom to take care of her.

I respect his decision, but it's another blow to the the Alabama gardening community....

Gee, I hate to hear that....but if his mother needed his help I cetainly understand. Sure am gonna miss going by there though...

We have a large, close-knit, far-flung extended family, so I enjoy having facebook to keep up with children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews from CA to NC to Fl. There are several Master Gardener groups that have facebook pages, but we haven't developed one here yet. I know what you mean about it showing all the people it thinks you may know and having lots of people you do know ask to be friends, but I just ignore most of those.

There is a tool on the FB that you can make yourself completely private. No one but the person you are posting to can see your comments. I just have not figured it all out yet. I love it because I moved away from where I grew up and had no way of finding anybody but going back home and going to the old houses which was 28 yrs ago.

nelson---i agree. my time is valuable and i can't justify
facebook. this forum and email are better ways to stay in touch with gardening friends.
