OK Now, Which Roses Have Been So Good...........

I am very interested to know which roses have been such great performers and magnifique this year, that you are going to plant more of them in your garden next spring.

For me it will be Golden Celebration and Errinerung an Brod. It's not just that GC is a favorite rose, but that the bush is so graceful. The yellow of the flowers is so soft, but rich and washed in gold. They make me happy and the fragrance was warm and sensuous all summer. Errinerung an Brod is new to me, but it's blooms were a beautiful merlot, turning violet in a nuanced way and the color is something I want more of in my garden.

Would love to read about your choices to repeat in your garden. So please let us all know which roses you will be ordering more of for next season.

I also thoroughly enjoyed Golden Celebration this Summer. But just as beautiful, was "Honey Perfume" -What a color that rose has-like GC but with just a tinge of apricot.
I hardly ever hear about "Radway Sunrise" from anyone, but it's one of my favorite roses. The color changes are fantastic. Although John Clare is no traffic stopper, it is a reliable consistant bloom machine. And the lovely Belle Story has graced my garden with her delicate stamens, and lots of bees.

Not sure I'm going to repeat any, but if I did, Tamora would be high on the list, as well as Perle d'Or. I have several Souvenir de St. Anne's as I fell in love with her a couple of years ago. (I think I mention her in almost every post!) But, instead of repeating her, I have been thinking about Souvenir de la Malmaison. I don't have one and think I would enjoy her.

My rose accumulations have been put on hold for a while until I make another garden spot! But that's what winter's for - planning.

I also am very anxious this spring to see Belle de Crecy's blooms. Got her this past spring from Home Depot and sure hope she's not an imposter!

Read my posting linked below. It advises to not get excited by early bud swelling and leaf growth. Prune at the normal pruning time for your area. Unusual winters are often followed by early attempts of a plant to break dormancy. Resist the temptation to prune now as any resulting new growth can be killed by "late" freezes. It won't hurt the plant to prune off any new growth when you finally prune at the proper time. Here is a link that might be useful: Weather Warning for the rest of February

I replied to your email. :) Basically yes, get the seeds out and cleaned, then you have the choice of winter-sowing, germinating in the refrigerator, or germinating in a cold frame. To use the refrigerator, rinse the seeds with peroxide (the medical supply kind) to kill mold spores. Optionally, you can try to score the seeds with a knife to encourage germination, but that's challenging to do without hurting yourself or damaging the seeds. Then put them in a damp paper towel in a ziplock bag in the fridge. Labeling and dating them is a good habit. Once they are in the fridge, ignore them for three months. If they get moldy, rinse in peroxide again and put them in a new paper towel and bag. Eventually the seeds will split in half and a tap root will come out. Plant this gently in a peat starter or sterile dirt (to sterilize it, soak with boiling water then allow to dry out before using). If the tap root is caught in the paper towel, don't try to pull it loose because the root is fragile, instead tear off that bit of paper towel and plant it.

Hi k, My only reservations with the Mannington Traditional Collection is it is a direct pressure laminate versus high pressure(high pressure will *usually* hold up better) and it states they use a teflon finish, which I honestly have never heard of for a laminate. Most laminates have a aluminum oxide finish. That being said, Mannington is a well known company and I don't believe it would be an inferior product. My personal favorite brand is Wilsonart. They would be worth giving a look at. I have read several good reviews about ifloors.com and fastfloors.com (I believe on this forum?). I have not personally purchased from either, so this is going by online reviews only. I hope this helps a little. I'm not sure about #2 as my husband does all the cutting, hopefully someone else can chime in on that. Good luck!

Lillie, don't give up... it may take a little while for some kitties to understand that wet food is yummy! You could try microwaving the food for a few seconds or so just to make the smell stronger but not heat the food, or try putting a favorite treat in the food. Some kitties are stubborn and they love that dry food, just be more stubborn! You don't have to feel guilty, just keep trying. Airforceguy (and all) if your dry-food-eating feline drinks a lot of water please be sure to have the vet check for feline diabetes. Since cats are obligate carivores (they do not have the enzyme humans, dogs and other animals have to break down carbohydrates) many vets are now giving more thought to the appropriate diet for felines - which is meat based. Many vets are also looking further into the cause and effect relationship between dry food diet and fd. My two boy-cats were kitty-crack addicts (dry food = kitty crack) and one (at 10 years old) is now diabetic - drinking larger amounts of water over a period of time was the only clue. Both boys are now eating wet food only and the weight loss is dramatic as is the reduction in water intake. Oh, someone commented that their breath doesn't smell as bad with wet food - add to that another plus... the litterbox doesn't smell as bad! As for fatty-liver definitely make sure your kitty is getting enough wet food when you transition. It may even be ok to let them eat until satisfied when you first start (I've found that once they get a taste for wet food they want a lot of it and then the appetite evens out) and then determine how much they should get daily based on their current/ideal weight. Talk to your vet about how much your cat should eat for optimum health. Peace

I am in a space crisis right now and can't add much more. However, theoretically these are my best ones that I could have more of quite happily. Cardinal Richilieu (if it would only repeat bloom, sigh), The Prince, Simply Marvelous, Grand Amore (sp?), Memoire, Moonstone, Boulie's Dream, Orange Flower Circus (may be called something else now), Marilyn Monroe, Lady Emma Hamilton, Benjamin Britten, Kordes' Brillant, Arthur de Sansal for its rich color, LD Braithwaite, Windrush, Michaelangelo (for some reason it actually took off this year and did something), Pleasure, Crocus Rose, Pink Parfait, Lavaglut, Ice White, Olympiad, Comte de Chambord, Golden Fairy Tale, Glowing Peace, Blueberry Hill, Charles Aznavour, Lili Marleen, Lemon Spice, and Blythe Spirit. I am being VERY picky about what I am getting for this next year.

I'll have to see how they get through the winter, but I have a few roses that are new favorites. They aren't necessarily antiques, but they would blend in well with OGRs. The polyantha "Lullaby" probably tops the list. It gets absolutely covered with blooms that look like little cream-colored Madame Hardy blossoms. It makes me happy every time I walk by. "Louisa Stone" looks like it's going to be an absolutely wonderful floribunda with an OGR look. And another "happy" rose is the mini-moss "Double Treat". I bought it on a whim, and it's rapidly moving up the happy rose list. Gorgeous, disease-free glossy foliage, and cheerful striped blossoms ranging from almost all pink to almost all yellow. And don't forget the moss!

If they make it through the winter ok and if I can figure out where to shoehorn them in, they might be repeats in my yard.

I don't plan on repeating any roses at the moment, but last season I bought another Souvenir d'un Ami after liking the first one so much. Also, after obtaining one Le Vesuve, I had to buy TWO more. Both of these roses do well in my hot summer without frying in the heat, and I love the lilac pink color and the constant bloom.

There are a lot of my roses that I would love to have multiples to mass......unfortunately, I also seem to want so many roses that I see that it is hard to not keep acquiring individuals!

Juliet, I am happy to hear that you love your E. an Brod; mine is new for me also (no blooms yet) and is still in a pot. At this point, I think I'll be waiting until next year to see what the blooms look like. The plant itself has been very vigorous.

I did go out and purchase multiples of Magenta and SDLM and plan on putting them in a bed together (I think I'm going to work my Reine des Violettes in there somewhere too).

One that I would definitely like to mass would be Mrs. B.R. Cant. Right now she is covered with fat buds and blooms and is SO HEALTHY! I do so like a rose bush that has foliage!

Another one that I have ordered multiples of is Distant Drums.....I love, love, love the coloring on that one.

As a matter of fact, if it were possible, I would have multiples of most of the roses that I have. Sometimes (most of the time) I wish I had multiples of ME to take care of all of them!

Has anyone had experience with zone 10 roses that are free of black-spot ? I am on Central west coast Florida and very humid, near the water, zone 9 but also considered zone 10, and I hate spraying.... help please ! thanks, saldut

Saldut, try some Tea roses. My Sunset is almost BS free, perhaps a leaf or two but not enough to notice.

My favorite is Souvenier de la Malmaison...I think it has always been a favorite. The scent wafts across the yard and I love sitting on the porch and just enjoy it. I had to amputate a large limb from being hit by the lawn mower and have put about 7 cuttings in a pot to try and root. This is a hard rose to root! I have 2 of them.
Another rose that is BS free for me is Duchesse de Brabant. I mean totally BS free and always has blooms on her. I have her white sport whose name escapes me at the moment.
My beloved Mrs. B.R. Cant has gall and needs to be removed...God love her. She has always been BS free also.
I can't imagine Golden Celebration in zone 10 being BS free without spraying her. But of my, the blooms are to die for and the scent is unbelievable. I had one but declined over the years, she was on the root stock Doctor Huey.

Soldat I agree with Deb, try some tea roses. An old friend from your area had spectacular luck with the Bermuda mystery roses. I seem to remember, Miss Atwell, Spice, Slater's Crimson China, Safrano, Archduke Charles, Souvenir de Therese Lovet,Mrs. B.R. Cant, Mrs. Dudley Cross, Brightside Cream, Maitland White and Vincent Godsiff. I know she never sprayed, didn't do too much of anything and some of these guys were house eaters.
As for me, I don't repeat roses either but the ones that tempt me are Evelyn, ( I know but she does all right for me) Gruss en Coberg, a fine big strapping girl with those gorgeous peach colored blooms, Sutter's Gold--the scent of fresh nectarines is too die for. R'eve d'Or is the finest climber.

Crimson Glory and Oklahoma are the best of the smelly reds but Souv. Claudius Denoyal is an amazing red tea with a big smelly scent that I love and no trouble whatsoever.
I know I'd get Gertrude Jeykyll if I ever lost her. That scent must be kept and the special order of Grace de Monaco from Vintage is one I ordered the other day because she was just so lovely in the sunshine and impossibly fragrant. No I don't repeat but there are a few I'd definitely replace.

Hi - WOW ! Those pics of the roses are fantastic, but they surely are not here in humid Florida ! I have never seens such healthy bushes here, I'll bet they are from Calif. If they are here in Fla., please please tell me what you do to get them to look that way ! sally

Juliet, so glad to read your praise of Erinnerung an Brod, a rose my husband and I will get for next year. He fell in love with it at a rosarium and is determined to find it. We have many other Geschwind roses but EaB seems better than most.

Sally, they are CA roses and I have no idea how to get them to grow in your climate. Carol from South Carolina has beautiful roses and she'd have to tell you what she does. I know it involves truckloads of horse poop. The things are enormous and bloom like crazy.

I'm rarely tempted to get "seconds" on roses, since my PREPARED space is limited, but I will say I have been so impressed with NurMahal (hybrid musk) that I am trying to root some cuttings. If they don't take, I will go looking for nurseries that have NurMahal in stock. I find this rose close to perfect: Beautiful semi-double crimson blooms, fragrant, healthy AND thornless!

Yesterday I bought my second and third LeVesuve - a 3-gallon and a 2-gallon!! Whooppee! A truly perfect rose here. I could gush forever about it.

Others I would gladly duplicate (and may just do it) are Anna Olivier, Enchantress, and Souv de Francois Gaulain, because they are supremely foliated and the last two are going to be on the small side, I think. Maman Cochet is only a year in the ground so she's gawky and hasn't produced a lot of canes yet, but her flowers are simply breathtaking. When I come around the corner and she's in bloom, it always catches my breath. I have two Louis Philippes and wouldn't be without him. I'm a sucker for that cherry candy smell. That's it for now.
