I would clean them all up. Dead canes, diseased leaves should go. You can use Elmers type glue, wood glue, fingernail polish, etc. I guess wax if you want, why not. Not they don't grow from the ends you cut. There are little bud eyes where the leaves come out. Just look at the beginning of where the leaf comes out of cane, you will understand. Actually there is a new video from Ashdown Roses I will add link. He is working on an established rose but I found that all the info is there for all types of rose plants. Yes, you could plant them. Don't put the mulch right up to the shank/trunk until you are getting ready for winter. By then you will know all about that :-) if you stay on with the rose forum. PcnwGrdngirl...It really is too early to be pruning your clematis...if you do prune now..the new growth that will emerge will only be zapped by a winter freeze...I am not sure what time is proper for your zone but here in my Zone 8B I prune mine around Feb. 14th or you can calibrate for you when the Forsynthias are in bloom or at the same time you usually prune your roses...so I would hold off...Clematis "Warsaw Nike" is a pruning group 3 and should be hard pruned to about an inch above the 3rd leaf axil in Late Winter/early Spring as it blooms on the new vines produced during the growing season......Clematis "Carnaby" is a pruning group 2 which isn't pruned till after it is bloomed and only to shape and keep in bounds BUT it won't hurt to hard prune it IF you really feel it's a mess...it will delay the bloom time...Pruning group 2's will bloom in Spring and again in late Summer/early fall...and some intermittently..hope this helps...Jeanne

Remember too that "A Shropshire Lad" is a climber and it wants to have long canes. If you train the canes horizontally along a support rather than trying to prop it up vertically, you'll get that horizontal cane putting up a lot of side canes called "laterals". These are the ones that will put out more blooms, so you don't have a little tuft of blooms at the top of the primary cane like a poodle tail. In general, you're right that pruning in the fall will stimulate growth, and some well-established roses can handle this fine anyway going into the winter. By next year, you can prune Lady of Shalott back somewhat later in the year if you really need to, though it's more effective earlier in the summer. Remember that the rose will branch off starting at the point you prune it usually, so you want to prune a little lower than the point where you want to see the canes bush out, but not taking off more than 1/3 of the total canes if you can help it. The main reason I don't do any serious pruning of most roses by this time of the year in zone 5 is that I want maximum surviving cane going into the winter so there is something of substance left in the spring to support new growth. If you prune more off now, then a foot of dead cane from winter exposure leaves you that much less of a rose than if you let the current growth remain through the winter. You do have to watch that the canes have some support, as Michael says, or they can pull away from the base of the rose because of their weight (that's probably what happened with your earlier cane break). Both of these Austins are likely to be fairly hardy for you, so you can compromise a bit by taking off a bit of the cane, but I'd leave at least 4' of plant if you have it. Something that can help with both support and winter protection is to stack some filled leaf bags around the perimeter of the bush, particularly your climber, leaving some space for air circulation around the rose. In the east coast, you have to be careful not to trap moisture around the rose, except snow that's a very good insulator for roses. You don't really need any winter protection for these roses, but the height and substance of the leaf bags might give your canes something to rest on above the 3' bag so the snow doesn't do much pulling at the base of the plant. Another option of course is to just do nothing, and that'll probably work too...these are pretty strong roses for you if you have that much growth going on. Cynthia

Well my roses are half way completely leafed out ! There are a couple stragglers but they at least are showing some signs of life. My most impressive one is lavender lassie . I forgot to get a photo but it is such a bright spring green ! another one going gang busters is the Rose flamenco rosita . This Rose was a 1 gallon from chamblees last spring . It is about 4.5 ft tall and 6 ft wide already , the Rose never stopped blooming and is better than any knock out . So pretty and never had any disease issues. It was a last min add on that I wasn't sure I would like .. well I love love love it ! The bronze spring foliage is unique too !! Please excuse the terrible photo taking .. it was just a snap to brag to my mom in pa how far along things are ! So is it safe to move roses now too ? I just have a couple that need moved
