S&W Greenhouse Open for Ordering

To riff off of Athena's posting about Palatine opening, S&W Greenhouse is also open for ordering. They sell bareroots grafted on Dr. Huey. The plants are excellent, however note that they ship VERY EARLY, the week of February 21, 2011, no exceptions.

I had to laugh. For us, late February shipping is VERY LATE -- almost too late for us. I nevertheless put an order in -- I got Koko Loco also, and I have very high hopes for that one.

Ditto. I've ordered from them 4 or 5 times, always with top-notch plants. Everything I got was always budded to Dr. Huey rootstock. That's not a complaint; just some people (including myself sometimes) are looking for a particular rootstock or own-root. That would be the only reason I could see someone wanting to look elsewhere. If you're happy with Dr. Huey, which is afterall the standard rootstock in the western U.S., S&W is a great choice. Mike

You're looking at most of what I have going right now, unfortunately. Last year at this time I was picking cucumbers. You can see this year's cukes in the middle left of that pic. They are just sprouts. Nothing will grow without sunshine, even when I keep it from freezing at night. Thank you for the compliment, but my idea of huge is 10x what I have now. This high tunnel is 14x48 with a gravel floor. The new one I just built is 18.5x48', but does not have the plastic on it yet, because I don't have enough plants to fill it. I bought ground cover cloth for the floor and a friend gave me some pallets, but beyond that I have not ordered everything yet. My plan up to now had been to use 11-gallon grow bags fed with an automated drip system. That would have been perfect in last year's weather. This year, we are so far into spring that I am starting to wonder if I'll have enough time to get a crop of tomatoes before the weather hits 95+ degrees. When that happens, I get thick skins and bitter fruit. All I can think of to do would be to just bury the entire container or root ball into the ground at that point. I like your idea with the cover and the light bulbs. Notice that you are three zones north of me and your plants look farther along than mine. Do they stretch at all toward the bulbs? I don't see yours doing that, but my worry would be that mine somehow would.

As soon as boscobel opens I'll be sure to post pics !! I am glad my dh dosnt like to touch the roses , I love to do that myself . One time he wacked down a row of limelight hydrangeas about 7 years ago and that was the last thing I asked him to do ! Lol he humors me and looks at blooms and smells them . And dosnt care if I spend a small fortune on my garden stuff. We can live off hot dogs and Mac n. Cheese ! :) I'd rather have plants . Seil , you would have loved it there! I know you grow lots of floribundas and they had a ton ! I fell in love with a few , one called jump for joy , white licorice was gorgeous and this one called Anna's promise . I don't even like oranges but maybe my heart is changing ! Lol Jump for joy ( above) Anna's promise. Camera doesn't even come close to how pretty it was! I order almost every yr from them. I am running out of room, but I lost quite a few roses this past season, so am looking to either replace or get something else. Their prices are the most reasonable, and shipping is also very reasonable. I plan to order CORETTA SCOTT KING, SUGAR MOON, and FIRED UP. Still debating if I want to replace two that died on me... BARBRA STREISAND and FIREFIGHTER (HACIENDA). Regan's is a great source also, but even for me being here in the same state, the shipping is a LOT more. I do want to order JULIO IGLESIAS, as they are the only source for a grafted one. But to make that shipping cost worthwhile, I would prefer to add a couple more roses. Just not sure what I really want yet. (Truth be told, I shouldn't be ordering anything at all!!) LOL

Ok, so when do they do the "buy 5, get free shipping" deal? They do it every yr, but I can't remember when they start it. What kind of shipping did you guys end up with on these orders?

Beth, I'm too lazy to look it up, but I only ordered the one rose for now. It was around $17, and with all the shipping, etc, I think my order was about $25.

I really want own root, bare root, so S&W isn't my #1 choice.....but I really wanted that rose.

February is actually too early for me, so I'll have to pot this baby up when it comes next year.

Thanks for the warning on the shipping. That would explain why I haven't ordered from them. February is about 4 months too early for me and there's no way I could keep the roses alive that long.

I see they carry Pumpkin Patch which I have been interested in for the past couple of years. Not sure who grows it. I may need to order that for next year and find out for myself.

Beth -- I went back through my emails from them for last year and do not see anywhere a "free shipping" offer. Their shipping deal now and all last year was buy 5 and get shipping for $5 total for the whole shipment. That's pretty dang good in my book, especially when the roses are mostly $16 apiece, which is also quite good. The only sales they had last year were at Halloween for three days when they had a buy ten, get 5% off (which is lame) and at the beginning of February when they attempt to sell out whatever hasn't been ordered at full price for $12 per rose -- but you won't get the newest or most popular varieties then, as they'll be long since gone. So you may as well order now, while the selection is best.

And I find it interesting that they have zero David Austin roses this year. Last year I got two DA's from them, The Endeavor and Benjamin Britton.

I also find it interesting that they don't have a category for "own root" roses, which they did have last year. Some of the roses they sell are, in fact, own root plants, but you can't figure out from the website which ones those are. Probably most of the floribundas that are of recent breeding are grown as own-root plants, however. Likewise the mini's -- I doubt any of those are grafted. Maybe you could call them and ask for the "own root" list. Dunno.

And BTW, I recommend one of the new ones I got from them last year -- White Licorice is a really nice rose.

Oh maybe that's what it was. I think it was buy 5 roses, get one free and $5 shipping. I know it was a really great deal. But I don't even see that it's buy 5 and get $5 shipping now. That I can handle. Guess I'll go see what 5 I can't live without. Oh and Kathy, I agree, that WHITE LICORICE is a really good one!

Not to change subject matter too much, but I know you have them Beth, so how are the thrips on White Licorice? The rose looks really nice, but if it's a Thrips magnet then the sellers picture of it would be the best bloom I would probably see in my Thrips ridden garden.
