I guess that's what I'm wondering, too, peggy--if CS and LP are so similiar, how ARE we supposed to tell the difference? Especially if CS is being sold as Louis, or vice versa. And that's good to know that LP doesn't mind a severe haircut, barb. I actually pruned back the sides of this bush quite a bit this spring, as it was extending over the sides of the pot by several feet, but I didn't touch the height. Thanks for that information, Malcolm...I thought I had detected some differences in what few pictures of Slater's that I had found. I think I'll hold off and deal with one mystery rose at a time. Usually I don't mind owning a mystery rose...I've been able to identify everyone of them so far (a Lady Banks which was actually Fortuniana, a Cuthbert Grant which turned out to be a Zephirine Drouhin, etc.) But the confusion as to what is LP and what is CS has thrown me for a loop! I guess I'll have to leave it at this--I own a China rose now, and what a lovely little rose it is!

The "Caldwell Pink" and 'Pink Pet' situation is odd -- They are surely the same rose, in that they grow and flower identically, although I'm not aware that anyone has actually tested their DNA (we should do that). HOWEVER, what we can be quite sure of is that the correct, historical name cannot be 'Pink Pet', which was a China, and this rose has little in common with a China, other than its quick repeat bloom. The leaves, prickles, flowers, etc., are all wrong for a China. Rather, it appears to be a repeat-flowering R. setigera hybrid, maybe with some Polyantha in its background. So at least with "Caldwell Pink" there is truth in advertising, in that the name indicates that we don't know its historic identity. 'Pink Pet' was given to the rose, I believe by Florida rosarians, to have a "legal" name under which to show it in ARS-sanctioned rose shows. In any case, there is no direct, proven (nor even suggested) link between this rose and the original 'Pink Pet'.

Having received e-mail about this post, will address several of the comments. 1) “Underlining of “found” roses, having an official AEN was not indicated, and could cause some confusion”. (I now realize that in “Word”, the underling of information does not appear when posted on the GW) 2) “Additional data on any “found” roses having an AEN would be helpful”. 3) “The fact, that “found” roses can be exhibited in a show that has a special class for “found” roses”. While they cannot receive ARS awards, are shown strictly for their educational value. (This being one of the main purposes of posting this list. That if a show schedule did have a special class for them, the exhibitor would at least have an idea of what roses are considered “found” roses). With this posting it will move down the line, replaced in the near future with one with more complete detailed information. Any comments or suggestions please use this post. Thanks
