I love to visit quiet places like that. Thank you for showing us the spring roses. The large plants in bloom and the beautiful monuments are grand and elegant and at the same time simple and peaceful. I'm glad they have let the plants remain large and not pruned them back. Have you ever started plants from cuttings from that garden?

Thanks, Everyone. It was a very nice day, and I'm thrilled with the photos. I just had to share. I think Nathalie Nypels may be the winner. The bush was very large (taller than me and at least that wide). It is in the Currie plot, and the photos of it are #6 - 13. vettin, that photo was one of my favorites too. The rose is a tea ... I lean toward Smith's Parish (or something like it) for an ID. I have never seen it with this much red. In the summer, most of the flowers are white, some are pink and white, some are pink, some are pink and red, with all sorts of combinations. The iron structure behind it is the grave of President Monroe. I took the photo while sitting on the ground, the sky and the monument are exactly as they appeared, and I used a fill-flash to illuminate the rose. My other favorite is the one of the yellow tea that I used as the teaser photo in my blog. It's the last rose in the series ... the one on the iron gate. One that I would really love to identify is this beauty: It is at the corner of the Hazen plot, photos #37 - 43. I have seen the bush many times in the summer, and this is the first time I have seen it with flowers ... I assume it's a once-bloomer. It's upright, maybe 4' tall, dark pink with shading, blues a bit as the flowers age in a vase, roots well from cuttings, and it set a lovely crop of hips that I noticed two winters ago. Funny observation ... the place was crawling with 'tourists' when I got there. After about an hour, it started to rain and everyone quickly disappeared. I figure that tourists are water-soluble and they melted. I left when the rain started to come down hard enough to endanger my camera. I posted all of this to, hopefully, encourage everyone to get out into the garden with a camera. Normally, we wouldn't think to take photos on a cloudy day ... we see here that clouds can make for some beautiful images. In this case, I think the lighting and slight mist added to the 'cemetery' atmosphere. Connie

Duchesse, two good examples of this are the historic Lynchburg City Cemetery (Lynchburg, VA) and the historic Old Sacramento City Cemetery (Sacramento, CA). The Sacramento City Cemetery (see link) was neglected for decades. Most of the original plants were lost. The few that remain have been saved and propagated, but the glory of this garden is the collection of roses found in endangered cemeteries and old gardens throughout California. They're grown in the Cemetery, where they are protected, and can be studied. Many roses have been re-introduced to commerce from the Cemetery. One of the really great things about this place (aside from the beauty and the history) is that this is a place you can see Old Roses grown to their full size and beauty. It's eye-opening. This looks a lot like 'Tausendschoen' to me. We have it growing in a few places at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. Even though it is technically a spring bloomer, it has been known to throw a few flowers in the fall. Here is one of the Hollywood roses, with a fall flower, for you to compare. The color is highly variable, sometimes darker, sometimes lighter, but the form is right.
