Hi,

I'm new to this forum and to roses in general so I'd appreciate suggestions from anyone for links to rose classification schemes. Currently, I only understand the difference between floribundas, grandifloras and hybrid teas but don't quite understand what makes a rose an 'old english rose', a 'damask rose', a 'tea rose', a 'noisette rose', a 'rugosa rose' or whatever. Any helpful links you can suggest to help me sort out the differences between the types and the classification schemes used will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The link below gives a fairly comprehensive (but not exhaustive) overview of old garden roses.

I don't think there is an 'old English rose' classification. The term 'English Roses' generally applies to roses hybridized in the UK by David Austin. His goal is to produce roses that combine the form and fragrance of antique roses with the wide color range and season-long flowering of modern roses.

albert 135: I agree that there's less traffic now, although I don't know if that's just because few people know the forum exists, or if the system is more depersonalized. In the old days there was a strong feeling that one person, the inimitable Spike, was in charge, and that he was watching and listening. He might ignore the issue, but we felt he was there. Nowadays there's Josh sometimes, and Tamara sometimes, and a lot of the time we seem to be shouting into emptiness. It may be just the perception that the Gardenweb Member is now farther away from management and that suggestions won't be implemented. This is not true, in that I've seen several suggestions recently become reality (Lighting forum, collapse feature) so there is someone there. I guess what I'm saying is that there isn't the same feeling of "ownership" that used to exist. Of course, the "good old days" were always better.... Claire

Is there a polite way of saying, "I haven't a clue how to do what you're asking! I thought I was doing marvellously to have worked out how to do a cut/paste of a URL. Now I'm out in cyberspace with no tools, no clues, and what started out with me trying to be helpful to a fellow gardener has turned into a techie nightmare! EEEEEEEEk!" 'Cos that's how I'd feel and I don't quite know how to say that politely. However, if there was an 'online here' place to go sneak a peek at how to do this -well, I'd save face and save the more cyber-savvy from my space-munching pastings.

Lots of information at the Rose Info page of the Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society site. And also check out the articles at the American Rose Society's Rose Care page.

"English Roses" usually refers to roses hybridized by David Austin, most are formally classed as "Shrub" (modern shrub). "Romantica" is a marketing term for a series of roses bred by the House of Meilland to compete with Austin. Roses under the "Romantica" banner have various classes, some are Shrub some are Hybrid Teas.

The Vintage Gardens site has them classified pretty well. Each class has a good description with growth habits and such.
