Helping Vintage and San Jose Heritage Rose Garden

Another way to help Vintage would be to make a donation to the Mel Hulse Memorial Fund for San Jose's Heritage Rose Garden, and to specify that the donation is for rose acquisition, to be purchased from Vintage Gardens.

The SJHRG has quite a long list of roses that they need, some to replace roses that have been lost, and others that have not yet been acquired for their collection. For all of us who are maxed out on space in our home gardens, but would like to support both Vintage and a very worthy public garden (and to honor the memory of Da Kernel, Mel Hulse), this is a way to do it.

Write "Mel Hulse Fund" on the memo line of the check, and enclose a note saying the money is for buying roses from Vintage Gardens.

The more, the merrier. Now, let's just pray for temperate weather for the weekend. :-) AND REMEMBER! The day before the ceremony -- Sun., May 17 -- is the Celebration Of Old Roses. This is not only a wonderful chance to see roses you might never otherwise see -- but a great social occasion. We'll have a GREAT selection of Silent Auction and Raffle roses and other things, to raise funds for the Heritage Roses Groups, but there will also be incredible things of all sorts for sale. DH and I will be there all day. I'll mostly be at the LOcal Groups table, with the Silent Auction roses, so please come say HEY. Place, El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane El Cerrito, CA Doors open 11 a.m. Food available -- and you really won't want to leave early. If you want to bring roses to add to the tables, please arrive before 10 a.m. The waiting time between 10 and 11 is a great time to socialize with friends outside. I'm hoping to meet a lot of y'all. Yes, 'Casimir MoullÃÂ©' is prominent in my garden, one reason being that it's planted in the middle of a fifty-foot fence, and its "whips" (it's hard to call those long slender things "canes") reach from one end to the other. The foliage is clean, glossy, and a cheerful grass-green, completely disease-free for me. Demonstrating why one shouldn't be too quick about things: It didn't bloom at all for the first couple of years after being planted; then it had one sole cluster of deformed blossoms the next year; the next year, it had a good number of clusters of proper flowers; and subsequently it has bloomed well. I bought it, having been attracted by its color being called "purple"--which it isn't. Under ideal circumstances (evenly cool to moderate conditions in the lead-up to bloom), they're a very attractive "imperial pink" to cerise. Unfortunately for me, it tends to have its mass bloom just when the year's first heat wave comes, so the blossoms under those conditions open too quickly and come out very pale. I don't believe I've ever detected any scent. The leaves are shed in the winter, having first turned a pleasant yellow. The thorns are tenacious and cruel. There has been absolutely no re-bloom on mine, and I've had it something like seven years now. To me, the flowers are just an extra; the pretty foliage and delicate-looking drapery of the plant on the fence more than justify its presence. Though I have to keep an eye out for its whips wandering where I don't want them, and though its thorns are merciless if they catch your skin or clothing, it's a definite keeper which I thoroughly recommend.

Hi - We sell some old roses at the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden (Old City Cemetery) open garden every April - this year will be Apr 18th. Our usual college greenhouse hasn't been available so everybody's propagating at home (even Jeri is doing some for us) and our selection will be a bit random - lots of some varieties and not any of others. Hoffman von Fallersleben is one of our favorites and we usually have had it, since it's not widely in commerce, but this year I don't think anybody took cuttings of it. It would be great if you could come up for our open house, Masha, so long as you got home in time to get the guys into bed. We start at 9:30. You could bring the boys along - but they might get smeared with chocolate up here, because we usually have cookies and a very soft spot for little ones.(Daun's daughter had a cookie or two this year, I'm pretty sure.) Jeri's right about taking cuttings - it's just plain rude to do it in somebody else's garden without asking, whether or not it's public. We have roses that are diseased, or that we don't want cut for a variety of reasons. Very few of our roses are under patent, so that's not an issue, but it certainly would be at the Heritage or other public gardens. We also want people to use sterile pruners. And, we want to encourage people to buy from commercial vendors if roses are readily available. Our policy usually is that people who come help can take cuttings, but otherwise, it's on a case-by-case basis. Anita

That is a wonderful idea Anita, I've been trying to figure out a way to help Vintage without getting anymore roses for my yard as I really have no space. This is great!

Lovely to get the compliments for the good idea, but I didn't originate it! I learned about this option while talking to some of the SJHRG volunteers yesterday, and offered to be the messenger.

Since I'm going to mail my check tomorrow, I wanted to let those who are not familiar with "The Heritage" see what it looks like.
These photos were taken in April and in May, as those are the times of the year when we are able to make our way there from SoCal.

Mel sure loved that Guadalupe Volunteer (and I couldn't blame him). Great to see such a nice photo of it, and a great idea to help Vintage!

I would like to order 4 roses with characteristics like small size, long flowering season, disease free (almost) and fragrant for hot and humid weather of Houston, TX. Your help will be greatly appeciated by me and Vintage.
