Helping Vintage and San Jose Heritage Rose Garden

Another way to help Vintage would be to make a donation to the Mel Hulse Memorial Fund for San Jose's Heritage Rose Garden, and to specify that the donation is for rose acquisition, to be purchased from Vintage Gardens.

The SJHRG has quite a long list of roses that they need, some to replace roses that have been lost, and others that have not yet been acquired for their collection. For all of us who are maxed out on space in our home gardens, but would like to support both Vintage and a very worthy public garden (and to honor the memory of Da Kernel, Mel Hulse), this is a way to do it.

Write "Mel Hulse Fund" on the memo line of the check, and enclose a note saying the money is for buying roses from Vintage Gardens.

Feel free to pass this idea around - and to make a donation, even if only for one rose.

And it falls right in line with the assistance Vintage has given in the past

You mean your other right, right, Jeri?? They look like twins! Thank you for the photos. I'll have to be more proactive training WAR. I have the wires in place now so it should be OK. RdO is going to a new home, and WAR will go in its place. I'm probably crazy doing this with a year of growth under my belt. (Time passes...) I went out and took pictures of him, and after some thought I've changed my mind about giving him away. I don't want to throw away a year's growth plus I figure he'll only get better, right? But this is what Reve d'Or looks like today. (I deeply apologize to all Floridian rosarians. In the CA vs FL contest my entry is an abject embarrassment. Do you see why I covet leaves???) The stink bugs have slowed down their chomping so he does have some leaves. So I'll stay the course. And I'll put WAR on an arbor where Don Juan is now. OK, I like that plan. I was there a few days ago. So much to see and what a great resource for rose growers. Looked like black spot has been running amuck there, and a lot of the roses are defoliated. I'm glad that they didnt spray, since it showed me which roses did better during height black spot pressure (not much of an issue for me, but still good to know). Now if only they had an Austin trial garden... :)

Jill, thank you so much for your reply. That "Keith's B-N" is one beautiful little rose. I didn't find it on HMF--will it appear there? I assume it is not available at all (yet)? I can only imagine what it must feel like to discover an unknown old rose--and such a lovely, fragrant one, wow. I was very taken with General Schablikine, so #3 is probably him. I wasn't really intending to take photos, and I normally would have been more careful about snapping pix of the IDs, but I was so overwhelmed by the roses, also the heat!, and I just kept drifting around, often in circles, just drawn to the next beauty that caught my eye. There were some roses that I ended up visiting numerous times, zigzagging around the garden. I look forward to another visit and can't wait to see the spring bloom next year. Sheba

That is a wonderful idea Anita, I've been trying to figure out a way to help Vintage without getting anymore roses for my yard as I really have no space. This is great!

Lovely to get the compliments for the good idea, but I didn't originate it! I learned about this option while talking to some of the SJHRG volunteers yesterday, and offered to be the messenger.

Since I'm going to mail my check tomorrow, I wanted to let those who are not familiar with "The Heritage" see what it looks like.
These photos were taken in April and in May, as those are the times of the year when we are able to make our way there from SoCal.

Mel sure loved that Guadalupe Volunteer (and I couldn't blame him). Great to see such a nice photo of it, and a great idea to help Vintage!

Hi - with the bad economic news, it's hard to think about giving money away, but I'd like to remind people about this opportunity to donate some funds in Mel Hulse's honor for rose purchases from Vintage Gardens for the San Jose Heritage Garden. Any donation is tax deductible.

I would like to order 4 roses with characteristics like small size, long flowering season, disease free (almost) and fragrant for hot and humid weather of Houston, TX. Your help will be greatly appeciated by me and Vintage.
