I am sorry your pet is suffering.
-the plant known as "Rock rose" is not a rosebush but a member of the genus Cistaceae there are 3 subspecies and are all quite different from true rosebushes.
True roses are classified within the genus Rosa.
I have used various Bach remedies, the best result I had was from "Rescue remedy" which works well for me for shock caused by injury.
-is there a vet near you that uses alternative medicine? other than that the only thing I could think of would be a low level dose of dog tranquilizer, to begin with and a higher dose if she tolerates it well.

Sherry, I used Rescue Remedy on a dog we had in Texas. She came home having cut herself badly on a barb wired fence. Her eyes were glazed over and I think she was in shock, poor thing. We dosed her with RR, and it really helped her come out of the shock. She healed just fine.

Sherry, I used RR on Blue and he did fine. But may not work on all dogs.
As suggested above, check with your vet about tranquilizers. It is worth it.

sherry, this is a wild punt but earlier in the year, your beloved Pepper died - could this be one of the reasons for your other dog's increasing anxiety. I would be reluctant to go down a chemical route just yet but you might give some thought towards getting another companion for your older dog. This does not always work and may even hasten your dog's demise - could you have a talk with either your vet or, if you have a vet school near you, they often have very good animal behaviourists there. You have my deepest sympathy as there is nothing worse than a panicked pet (well, maybe a panicking child) who is nor receptive to reason or able to take any comfort that this will soon pass.
If you do not want to take on another new pet, are there any animal charities which arrange fostering - in the UK, the Blue Cross and the Cats Protection League both offer this service which can be brilliant for someone thinking of getting a pet but still anxious about taking the plunge into full ownership. My collie has also had a lifetime of whimpering, eyerolling panic as soon as a firework or thunder storm is heard - nothing much to be done there apart from continual stroking and reassurance but it sounds as though your dog has moved up into a frigntening intense level - the old adage about teaching old dogs new tricks is not true so it just may be worth considering other more oblique ways of dealing with this.
Herbal remedies can be surprisingly effective on animals and there is a range of possible sedatives such as valerian, chamomile, skullcap, hops and you could also investigate other mild tranquliisers from a vet as they can also work wonders. Please do not give up just yet -although you, more than anyone, will know when it is no longer kind or humane to prolong suffering. I wish you well in this. Suzy

Carol, that is encouraging. Thanks for the good word. Ingrid, thank you, she seems better today in that when she started to panic (2 or 3 times) she settled down each time pretty quickly with 4 or 5 drops. It's really pretty amazing. I just bought an anxiety wrap witch didn't work (how did DH know it wouldn't work?), but today has been good. My only concern is the grape alcohol in it (27% or 1 drop). Grapes are toxic to dogs and so is alcohol, but it's such a minute amount. I hope it's OK. I couldn't get the pet version locally and didn't buy it online either, not realizing the alcohol could be a problem. :((

Suzy, it has occurred to us that her panics might have been intensified by being alone. She did not show any change after the loss of Pepper. I was a little surprised, but this may be a secondary effect of simply being alone since she has always had separation anxiety. She has only taken ACE a couple of times. It didn't really work. She panicked at half speed, and she had several seizures for a few months afterwards. I've tried Elavil (amitriptyline), melatonin, valerian, benedryl, OTC calming concoctions - none were effective, and DH thinks some may have made her more frantic. DH usually just holds her in a body-lock against him on the sofa. I think she knows it's a comfort (she'll press her head on his chest sometimes), but she has to be picked up and she does resist pretty intensely. Tom is about shot after an hour of controlling her this way. She's 38 pounds of moving muscle and determination, and she will not quit. We have often feared she'd have a heart attack during these episodes. (She had one while we were driving to Georgia during a night-time thunderstorm. I was driving, and I was afraid both of them would have a heart attack. My worst nightmare!) She is just so beyond frantic, absolutely terrorized. Her mother was thunder phobic. We know because the night we picked her up (at 9 wks old) there was a horrendous thunderstorm, and the mother had scaled the kennel fence and run off. Ellie wasn't phobic until she was two yrs old. Don't know if introducing a new dog would be a wise thing right now. I kind of think it would only add to her stress. Oh, she also HATES crates. Thanks for all your kind help. Life with Ellie has taught me never again to demand that we get a dog - or anything else. We've paid the price for my getting my own way. I really did think this was a rose question and not OT.

I just read your post regarding your pets anxiety. It is a horrible thing to watch and experience. Regarding the use of Anxiety Wrap: While some pets do respond after the first wearing of the wrap, it can take 2-3 times wearing it to see results. I would suggest contacting Susan at Anxiety Wrap, (she created the product and has years of experience with pet anxiety) via email to receive a free of charge treatment program for your companion. It's important to know how to best use the wrap to address your pets issues. I found that Anxiety Wrap works wonders... I hope a treatment program will help your pet!

I've been involved in dog rescue for over 12 years. For dogs with anxiety issues, I recommend daily dosing with Rescue Remedy AND use of DAP (dog appeasement pheromone). DAP is generally sold under the brand, Comfort Zone. I have used both the collar and the plug-in with success. My preferred source (based on price) is the Foster and Smith catalog, but you can find the product at your local Petsmart or Petco store. I don't have any personal experience with the Anxiety Wrap, so I cannot offer an opinion on that product. Good luck!

Sherry, So sorry to hear about your dog. My Great Dane had a couple seizures when she was a puppy. She got thru it alright thankfully. She also slightly tore a ligament when she was a puppy.Thank God I didn't have to do a TPLO on her. I will be trying stem cell therapy on her Winter. Hopefully it will help her not get arthritic. Hard to say but she is worth every penny to me. Best of luck.

We have had very good results with a product called "Calm Child" from the health food store. It works well for our thunder phobic Lhasa Apso male, Shuggie. It is marketed for ADD children.

At the same store, we found a homeopathic remedy for "loud noise" anxiety that was specific for animals and it works well, too.
