Can Dublin Bay be grown in partial shade?

OK! I know that most roses need at least six hours of sun -- I have a spot that gets 4 to 5 hours and have another climber which is doing fine there. Only it is an All Ablaze -- a very strange climber with long droopy canes and very full blooms. Beautiful, but I'm just not happy.

At Heirloom yesterday, I saw a Dublin Bay. Gorgeous, vigorous, nearly always in bloom. Unfortunately, they were out of it. Chamblee's has some though which would be shipped in September. Should I tough it out until next Spring or give into my desires and go ahead and get it now. Such torture with my rose addiction. Thanks for your input. CJ

Yup, it sure can. I grew it on the east side of my house up in Oakridge & it flourished there. I now have one in an area where it gets sun up until 1pm. It's doing great -- just doesn't grow very fast.
I have All Ablaze also - in the full sun. It's doing exactly what yours is doing.

Thanks Peggy Oregon for your input! I'm going to order one and place it right next to my Fourth of July. Should be spectacular when Dublin Bay reaches its full growth in oh. . .two to three years from now. The way of these bands, one needs so much patience. For now, CJ

I'm partial to Dublin Bay--as my user name suggests. Those clear red blooms (no hint of purple like many red roses sport)are so bright and eye-catching. It is reasonably disease-resistant and reblooms OK, although not prolifically. If you grow yours on a pillar like I do, make sure you wrap the canes around it while they are young. The older canes get quite rigid and unbending. I don't have a really good pic of DB, but this one might suggest the eye-catching red of this climber. Dublin Bay Kate

They had a pink climbing rose at Lowes but forget the name of it. Would have got one but they looked pretty pathetic. I looked on the tag of the 2nd one said it was grown in Canada but it didn't have the name of "Demokracie" anywhere on the tag that was tied with string around the main branch of it. So I imagine like the first one it is the Original blaze. It is doing so awesome the first one. Here is a picture of it. And I found out I can plant the 2nd one I got up against the Wooden Fence like this one only further down. YAY!! Discovered caterpillar or rose slugs not sure which on it anyhow I picked them off and threw them over the fence :) Was on just one branch as you could tell by the leaves. I also removed two that had the leaves like a cocoon with the caterpillar in it so just removed that entire leaf bract and pitched it over the fence. Haven't seen any since on it. I didn't want to spray it as we do have chickadees and chipping sparrows come to our gardens too. Have set up a small birdhouse in it and the chickadee have taken up residence it . They are sooooooo cute.

Hope you don't mind if I butt in on this thread but I just want to tell Kate how beautiful her Buff Beauty, queen of Sweden and the red rose bush in her garden, I can't remember the name, ugh, they are so pretty and your whole garden is inspiring. And I am referring to the pics of your garden that you posted on another thread. I had to stop reading that thread because it really annoyed me that someone demanded you post pics of your garden and then was soo rude after you so graciously posted some beautiful pics and you your self had been so nice. Anyways thanks for sharing your pics. Buff beauty is on my maybe list and it's nice to see one that someone is growing. Thanks for sharing your beautiful and enchanting garden with us! Hi Kathy, nice to 'see' you again! When I cannot get the color right (Black Magic, for example), I stand there and take the same shot over and over, using different camera settings. On one of my cameras, Portrait worked, and on this one, I believe it's "Sunset" that gets the most reliable color. I would try that. Speaking of Clematis, I planted one in with an Awakening about 3 years ago and it is the slowest growing thing I have ever seen! Mary

My Dublin Bay is directly under a plum tree. The only sun it gets is from an angle in the morning, but it blooms and blooms and grows pretty vigorously. Growing it next to 4th of July sounds like a great combination.

You just might have better luck with yours. Mine was a grafted rose, that I moved 3 different times & was ready to shovel prune, when I plopped it down in the spot it's in now. Guess it got scared & decided to do something then.
I am keeping All Ablaze, but just planted 2 other roses with it to fill in. Amadeus and High Flier. I figure that, out of the three, one of them is bound to do good. lol
