Here we go again .....

I've got some beautiful roses. Most are in their third season, and are really doing well, despite the terrible spring we had. Many of them are covered in buds right now that could open any day if not destroyed first.

I had never seen a Japanese Beetle until 3 years ago. This year they're so bad I've got a few Beetle lollipops like in the photos posted by Harry. I suppose I invited them in when I planted 70 rose bushes in my back yard. I pick by hand everyday, but they're always back the next. I know many people say the traps just attract them to your yard, but none of my neighbors have any flowers in their yards, and mine is full of them. So guess where all the beetles go for lunch. So my logic was I might as well put up the traps, they're coming here anyway, and even just a few beetles still completely ruin the flowers. I figure every beetle I kill is a victory, and one less that can breed in my lawn, or my neighbors. For best effect, I put one on each corner of the lot, hoping to lure them away from the flowers. My first impression is I'm finding fewer on the flowers, and I'm definately killing more than by hand picking alone. The battle rages on.

A couple of sanitary cycles with LCB did the trick on the gaskets. Only thing I had to so was on 1 cycle, I took a cloth to wipe the upper part of the gasket, threw some old towels in (to make a higher water load) and the gaskets are perfect. Inner, Outer, Backside of inner, etc. I must have done 6-10 loads of Sanitize, with 2 of them using dishwater powder and the rest LCB. Next is the outer drum. LCB did break up the top layer of whatever was on it. Assuming it's BioFilm, etc, any other suggestions on what will cut it without any mechanical agitation....Just short of me opening up the beast. I did not have citric acid on hand, so I used up 5 packets of descaling powder I use on my coffee machines. In removed very little bit of the biofilm when using this.. I need something that will do it ~ALOT MORE~ . Trying to see if I can get this clean chemically before I attempt to open the panels up..to get access

Well some would say my back ups are over kill for phone and computer. I figure the less I keep on the device cluttering it up the smoother it will run. I have seen to many people crying over lost family photos because they didn't back them up. I hope they can figure out what is causing this. I had the boot loop issue with the G4 and LG admitted it was their update that fried the phones. Happened once in warranty and once out of warranty and out of warranty LG still gave me a prepaid mailer and fixed it free once they determined it was not my fault. I have to say their customer service was very good to deal with on that issue. I didn't realize how updates worked with tracphone and the lesser carriers so good to know.

Maddielee, finally heard from them at 8 PM last night. They are Ok, had 9 ft storm surge that went under their house, but cars got a foot of water. Singles gone, facia boards gone. Windows saved by hurricane shutters. No electric, water, or sewer yet. Ground has to dry before using septic or it will back up (they had to put semi deflated rubber balls in toilet and sinks to keep sewage out during flooding. Currently no cell or text service, but they have a DSL line working that they hooked to wi-fi fix to use when generator is running. Two hours on, two off.

Start putting down Milky Spore. It takes a couple of years to become really effective, but it works. If you are the yard they are munching in, yours will probably be the yard the breed in, lay their eggs in, grow their grubs in...

I may try Milky Spore. I've been considering it but people report mixed results, especially in a cold climate.

Milky Spore won't move out into the neighborhood and that's the problem. (That and the cold.)

My sympathies Mike. I think last year's drought combined with no rain amount this year has lessened our population. Too bad the mosquitos are still here.

mixed results, especially in a cold climate.

One person at our ext ofc said another had good luck with Milky Spore. My neighbor is going to use it in combo with GrubX.

I'm thinking to lay the MS in the spring after the last frost, have to reapply every year for a few years (some say not). I was told to get the GrubX down by Jul 31, didn't make the deadline, took down my traps, yard is too small, plus not as many roses as you, hand picked, just got back in, got 2, so they are in decline here but not gone.

and at useful link, can't find the one that told how much to use in several different brands of spreaders.

"Milky Spore is a bacterium, Bacillus popillae, which is lethal primarily for Japanese beetle grubs. Once applied, it can remain in the soil for many years. In warm climates, good control of the Japanese beetle can occur in one to three years; in cooler climates, three to five years.

Also says 10 oz. covers 2500 sq ft.

So people reporting poor results may need more patience, also problem with acidic soils, much pro and con about it for northern gardens. Worth a try.

You are supposed to use the special mix for spreaders, cannot find the page that listed several brands of spreaders and what settings to use for certain spreaders.
