I have been out of town/out of email for a week and when I got home found and email, mailed thru Garden Web from an "eva1garden@yahoo.com" requesting cuttings and info on Gallicas. The writer is obviously not a native English speaker and there were several odd references to climate and types of plants that put me on my guard. Has anyone else rec'd such an email or seen such a person posting on here? I have not replied. If this is an honest request, I would suggest that the individual post here.

I admit, I contacted couple people about gallicas. First I didn't know it is against gardenweb rules. I also didn't know that to be a member of gardenweb is only for "native English speakers". :-o However you accusing me being fraud is little bit too much .
I am very sorry that I have ever contacted you, I am very sorry that I have offended you with my grammar by being not native English speaker . I donÂt know what you mean by odd references to climate and types of plants?? I think your post was very wrong because you didnÂt even bother to contact me in the first place!!!

The forum is not just for English speakers. However, there are now numerous email frauds, many of them from overseas, so any atypical email with non-native English requiring an email response is immediately suspect. I have had two friends who drawn into scams by responding to emails similar to your. One cannot respond to you without disclosing one's email address and that is what we wish to avoid. Here on the forum, people usually put their requests for help and information on the forum. Please understand that if your response is genuine, no offense is meant. We are merely trying to protect ourselves. If you post your queries here on the forum, we will all be glad to respond to you here.

I still don't understand why are you doing this. I don't know you, I never trade with you. I was not asking you to give me your account number!!!! Are we still talking about plants? All I asked you was some info on gallicas and maybe cuttings exchange. Because yes I do exchange cuttings, plants and I am not "new" to this forum. And you should have no trouble to find out that I posted on gardenweb before. And you are acusing me being a fraud. I don't know you either, however i would never leave negative feedback based on the fact that you don't like grammar in my email. I receive emails for trades all the time, and never did blame anybody that they are fraud, so nobody would trade with them again. You could just delete my email, before causing any damage in case you were wrong. So thank you!!!I know one thing I would never trade with you based on this experience.

Eva, many people do not like getting emails from strangers. That is why many of us just ask our questions on this forum. After posters gets to know each other better online, they often do not mind receiving emails or giving another poster permission to email them. It is the "stranger" part that makes some people nervous.

I hope you continue to post on the forum--so that you are no longer a "stranger" to the other posters here. : )

Please don't misunderstand eva1garden, it's that spam does happen here and in the past people have gotten computer viruses from email sent through gardenweb.

It's really not about you, it's about people's experience in the past that you may know nothing about, that has made people here cautious. You registered last year, some of us have been here for 15 years and have seen a lot of stuff that made us cautious. That's all. It's nothing against you personally.

People here are pretty friendly, just a little cautious, and if only people with perfect English posted, then there would only be about two posters! :)

Eva has perhaps inadvertantly let us know that he or she knows the internet. The phrase "negative feedback" is internet savy.

There are several options for someone like eva and eva chose a really bad way to respond, in any language.

Sadly, Eva has not had a good first experience with the Antique Roses Forum. I googled her user name and found four results over several months. I'm very sorry, Eva, for the hurt that came from cautiousness. It's unfortunate that the internet has become a dangerous place. On Tuesday at work I clicked on a file in an email "from FedEx" and got a trojan virus from it. It's gotten so you can't trust anything strange and almost anything familiar. (BTW, don't click on anything in an email from FedEx saying your shipment wasn't delivered. The zip file opens an executable file that doesn't say ".exe". So beware. FedEx does not send emails with attachments, only tracking links.)

I never open, let alone answer private e-mails I do not recognize by their titles as being legitimate messages. That is a standard precaution, long widely recommended.

I got a message from eva1 as well and deleted it because it seemed odd. Anyway, I don't have any gallicas yet, anyway.

One thing that's interesting is that eva1's trade list is extensive and shows what I'd call a high plant sophistication as well. There were many out of the ordinary words correctly spelled, also. I think that maybe eva1 is a plant dealer and perhaps sells on e-bay or something similar to that. She has some interesting plants to trade.

I also meant to say that I don't think there's anything wrong with looking for cuttings to trade for plants. I just routinely delete emails from unknown people.

As far as grammar is concerned, mine is pretty terrible here a lot of the time.

I'm just curious now about what you want. Are you a gardener or a plant collector or an ingenious entrepreneur?

I just hadn't gotten around to answering eva1's email when catsrose started this thread. I trade plants all the time, and it's usually a very positive experience. I also send private messages through GW when I have something to say that's not the sort of thing that goes here on the forum. What got my radar up was a person who sent the same email to a number of different people ... could be a real person, could be spam, I didn't know.

Eva, dear, there's no damage here. Sorry your feelings got hurt. This is the Internet, and we all have to be cautious. This little part of the Internet (the Antique Rose forum) is a place of great generosity, and kindness ... with some of the best people you'll ever find. We'd love to have you here.

I hate to say it, but harborrose just upped my suspicions. In the email I rec'd, Eva claimed she lived in Rutherford, VA, which at least made sense in directing her inquiries to myself, Connie, and Robert. But Harborrose is in the PNW and she doesn't grow gallicas....
