A number of Gardenweb people were there -- in fact I think that we made up a sizable subset. Please do pipe in and add your own comments. I really enjoyed seeing all of you!

Besides the pleasant, decidedly cooler weather, I enjoyed meeting the people, seeing the roses, and making my modest purchases. I am replacing a 'Mel's Heritage' that failed in my garden. I also picked up 'Jesse Hildreth' to see how it does here in my lower foothills garden.

There was also a good talk on growing roses in drought. Based on that talk I will be moving my young 'Cl Madame Caroline Testout' away from the back fence where other the roses are somewhat drought tolerant teas and noisettes. Bad hydrozone mix on my part, but I will wait until we are solidly in the rainy season to correct the error, as the speaker also recommended that. The short take away was that modern hybrids -- HTs, floribundas, Austins, grandifloras -- need more water than do the noisettes, teas, chinas, and ramblers. This does not mean that we do not need to water these roses, just not as frequently. She touched on the European OGRs, but we decided it was difficult to separate soil types and lack of winter chill from water issues.

It is in about 1/2 in bloom now. Last year, we counted 152 buds/blooms in this typical inflorescence! Blooms constantly too! It is about 6' x 6' now in its third season.It is registered. I do need to find someone to put it in commerce. Got another birddrop coming. Stand by for 'Lupita' Da Kernel

Kippy, Thank you, you're right. This is a major project for us--we're reshaping the garden for this as we speak. As anyone in the Western U.S. knows, microclimates rule, and it's essential to know your spread--the frost pockets, the warm hills, the buggy, boggy holes. I think we're almost ready, and I simply can't wait. The goofy temperatures I quoted were extremes I've seen in 30 years living on this road (along with one 60-year flood), but they're freaks--only once in a very long while. We're cherry growers and what hurts roses (climate wise), hurts cherries. We're very mindful of it. Plus, I have access to smudge pots, apple bags, all sorts of tools to alleviate the pain of living in the high desert. I was just panicking. I actually think Gregg spent some time matching his precious orphans with climates, and I spent time refusing to consider anything even vaguely weak.

Way out of your climate zone, but grew Golden Wings in a Shenandoah Valley garden, where it flowered from Spring till late in Fall. Under References at HelpMeFind, found several reporting repeat to continuous bloom, as does Rogue Valley in the link below. Even Austin remarks on its "Excellent continuity of flowering" on his USA site. Maybe it's a deadheading & watering issue? Santa Fe Botanical Garden in NM notes it blooms from "mid-spring to late summer" there, and believe that's a semi-arid climate. It may receive supplemental watering, as they advise "deep watering every once in a while. Be sure to water it at the base or by drip irrigation". Remember it as a charming rose, with great Autumn hips if the last crop of blooms aren't removed. Well, I think I may be onto the ID of this rose. The tip-off came this morning when I took a slightly different route on my walk through the new development. First I saw this: then this: and this. Looking behind the hedge I saw this: So here's the rose (or extremely similar, including scent) at a house that is less than 10 years old about 3 blocks away. It's planted as a ground cover, but a few long canes have escaped and become vertical in the Escallonia hedge and it was obvious, on examination, that the plants have been hacked back mercilessly to keep them as groundcover in a tight space and that their natural tendency seems to be climbing. There were, of course, no tags on the plants that I could see. Searching the internet ("white groundcover climber cluster rose"), I came across a photo from "A rose garden in Sardinia" (morrisnoor) and that led to 'Alba Meillandecor' (1986), which is what I think it may be. It looks like an old rose because it is essentially a hybrid of R. sempervirens x R. wichuraiana. The fringed stipules would be from R. wichuraiana, I guess, per a note on a photo by Patricia Routley. The scent would be R. sempervirens. It has been sold by Armstrong Garden Centers, one of which we have not far away and is also sold as 'Alba Meidiland', plants of which I think I have actually seen around here in nurseries. The fence it sits on at the old Livermore Valley Cellars is not so old, within the last 10 years (very likely built when the development went in), so I can imagine this rose being planted when the fence was built (will ask). HMF describes it for beds or as a ground cover, but the photo of it climbing an oak tree in Italy shows it's a climber, not to mention its background. I didn't see galls on the plants I saw today but, Jeri, looking back in Baldo's email about where he had seen galls like these (which are apparently rare) some years ago, he says that the name of the rose was "White Mellandina or something like that". (!!!!) That practically clinches it for me. What a convergence of clues all of a sudden. As a number of people say in the comments section for Alba Meillandecor on HMF, it's a very nice rose. I had a wonderful time meeting everyone and seeing all the plants. I need to come back in the spring when it is all in bloom

I got my babies and a coup!e of extras, stopped in Santa Cruz and bought of of Bill the Bulb Baron's bulbs and a pair of salvias

I did walk the entire garden and found my new love...... I loved the shape of 'Paul Noel' it was a rose waterfall. I hope some one roots it

Such a nice event and really great to finally meet so many here on the forum, all in one place! Many roses were blooming, too, and it blew me away, walking around, to see Rosa laevigata in bloom this time of the year (once bloomer, right?) -- that one had such an incredible scent that I could hardly pull myself away. One of my votes for future propagation would be Jill Perry's find, "Keith's Bourbon": light pink, a zillion petals in cup form, and a scent to die for.

I also got a "Jesse Hildreth", the last and the runt of the litter, but, taking a look, has good roots despite being small at the moment, so I'm sure he will come along fine. I also picked up a spin, 'Mary Queen of Scots' for a semi-wild area in my garden and a lovely tea, 'Edith Perry', a seedling of 'Bon Silene'.

'Paul Noel' is on Heirloom's list, Chris209, though currently out of stock. "Rose waterfall" is an apt description for it, Kippy -- another rose with great foliage and great blooms. Too many roses and too little space to grow them all, so SJHRG is a total treasure.
