Vintage's photo shows a beauty with a green button eye and the description says a strong musk fragrance. Sounds perfect and noisettes are wonderful in my climate. The size chart shows her as being the same growth habit as my Mary Washington who is about 5 feet tall and is easily kept to that height without minding an occasional trim. Can someone who is growing this rose tell me about the rebloom, fragrance and size in their garden? Is she as disease resistant as most of the noisettes? One concern I have is that one of the parents is Champneys and that is one of the few noisettes that will almost completely defoliate here. A photo of the bush would be very helpful.

Funny you should bring her up Carol.

Last spring, in the Sacramento City Cemetery Historic Rose Garden, I
wanted to walk down and see the healthy Aimee Vibert there, because I
knew it was one of the plants that was "original" to the old Cemetery.
(Meaning it was likely planted in the latter half of the 19th Century, or
the first years of the 20th Century.)
But my back was giving me the devil, so I didn't get there.

Earlier this month, when we went to the Cemetery, I wanted to check that
plant out, and hopefully get cuttings to propagate for the Open Garden Rose Sale.
I caught it between flushes, but as you can see, there are buds setting.
And this, while the nearby trees are already turning brown and gold for Fall.

The bush certainly has a nice mounding shape and pretty foliage. Do you happen to recall the fragrance?

Anyone in this area of the country grow it that can tell me about blackspot resistance?

Interesting. I already grow MAC, which is a lovely rose, but I have room for one more climber and I was considering Eden. I have seen two specimens here in Southern California. One is at The Huntington Library and Gardens and the other is at a local nursery called Persson's. The one at Persson's looks very old, with the main cane probably 6 inches in diameter or more. At least right now they are both covered in blooms that are gorgeous! I am very surprised to hear that the blooms won't open here, especially given the rather cool and wet spring we have had! Another reason I liked Eden is that, as old as the plant is, it seems rather small. MAC, as mentioned, is gigantic. Eden gets very large HT sized blooms which remind me of Moonstone and a lot of them.

Thank you, thank you for going to all that trouble. Coffee beans, huh? I didn't know that, but it makes sense! Earlier this year I read The Secret of Chanel No. 5: the Intimate History of the World's Most Famous Perfume. It was full of stuff about the perfume industry, Chanel herself, and interesting theories about why she chose that particular fragrance as her signature, and why it became so famous. I totally agree about the growth habits of AV and MP. I have the shrub form of AV, and I killed at least three before I finally got one to live past the band stage. It's still very small, but healthy. I almost lost it to spider mites, but I finally go those under control. Even as a tiny plant, though, it wants to bloom and bloom. So I do need to start pinching off the buds so that it puts on more growth. Last week I noticed AV and Mrs. Charles Bell both had newly opened blooms, so I cut both of them to enjoy inside. MCB has shriveled and gone, but AV is still looks the same as the day it was cut. Who knew she'd be such a good cut flower? Can't wait until it starts making those big clusters. I'm out of room, but there are two or three roses that I'm thinking of removing. I might replace them with a Marie Pavie. Thanks again!

I had grown 'Indigo' for well over a year in a pot here - it grew and bloomed almost like a floribunda when cut after the flowers fell apart (which they did rather quickly in the heat, like within a day). It didn't have so much as a speck of anything on its leaves. When it arrived from California, it was sick looking and anemic - some warmth, good soil and food restored it to such good health I had to give it to my mother in Minnesota because I couldn't give it the bigger pot it needed. 'Marchessa Boccella' is spotless up north, and the blooms are absolutely charming - I don't think everyone is as particular as Patrick about mathematically perfect flower form. Some of the flowers can be extremely wide in favorable conditions. As others noted, it's supposed to be a hybrid perpetual, and it is certainly not a short rose. 'Rose de Resht' is a trooper, doing well in spite of black spot and crud (which we do get up north, by the way, so it isn't a latitude issue!). This one is also thought to perhaps be a hybrid perpetual of sorts; I don't know about that, but the China background is pretty obvious when you look at the plant. I have a supposed 'Duchess of Portland' at home, but I wonder about its identity because it wants to grow large and only blooms once a year. It isn't a plant I'd particularly recommend to anyone, if that's all there is to it. Carol, do you know which 'Rose du Roi' clone you're growing - the old one of commerce, or the "real" 'Rose du Roi' isolated from 'PananchÃ©e de Lyon' at Vintage?

I am in the minority, for though I like to see "Blush Noisette" in others gardens, I prefer these Noisettes; "Champneys' Pink Cluster" has a very pretty bloom shape due to a wave in its' petals, when fully open. It's in full bloom again, in mid-November in Morcam Park in Oakland, Ca.. ( in front of R. moschata by the s.w. staircase) "Caroline Marniesse" because its' rosebuds are the size, color and shape of cherries, and this gives a marvelous contrast to the paler open blooms that surround the buds. "Secret Garden Noisette" is the most fragrant Noisette I've ever come across. I mussed one bloom with my fingertips, and for the rest of the afternoon the fragrance lingered there, as strong as clove and rose perfume. It has a rather bright pink shading, around the outer edge of the petals, that doesn't fade in hot full sun. "Princesse de Nassau" has a lovely arching growth habit, and attractive dark green leaves which combine beautifully with its' creamy white roses that open to show stamens the color of orange juice. Sorry Carol -- by the time blooms got to me they were pretty faded.
I should have gone to visit it on my spring visit, but walking was out of
the question at the time.
It's my understanding that it is very fragrant.

Mine (from Vintage) has a powerful, sweet fragrance.

No BS here--so can't comment on that.

I can confirm the nice fragrance.
Fred Boutin, who donated many of original roses growing in the Sacramento Historic Rose garden, told Anita that this plant at one time was about 8'x8' (perhaps 10-15 yrs ago). But remember that is it quite old. The work crews in the cemetery have severely pruned it in the intervening years. Since it is not technically in the "rosegarden" area of the cemetery it was not off limits to the weedwhack, mow and blow guys. It is now been "protected" and any pruning is restricted to the rose garden volunteer staff. We are hoping that the plant will regain size. Since it is off the beaten path, I don't go by it that often, so can't say how often it blooms. But it did have a nice spring flush and as Jeri's photos show it is ready to bloom again.

Thanks Janelle, she must be a pretty tough rose to survive mow and blow guys. I would love it if she turned out to be a similar size and shape to Mary Washington, as shown on the Vintage page. MW makes a beautiful bush and blooms all the time. I have high hopes for AV. You must love working in that beautiful garden.

I have hopes for AV as well.

We have cuttings, and IF they take, I am curious to see if there will be
a boost from what Kim Rupert calls "restoring juvenility."
