Whats going on with the stems (description only)?

Hi guys! I was hoping you could tell me what was wrong with the stems of my DA rose 'Carding Mill'. The stems have a some small, random brown splotches all along it. They are brown towards the top part of the cane, but at the bottom there green splotches, almost like watermarks. I sliced into one of the brown splotches with my finger nail and under it is green stem. The sploches are hard and like a scab if you will. What is this?

Ive had this rose for about four years now and havent been having great luck with it. It has a ton of dead on it every spring and I end up having to cut it to the ground. It hasnt been a very strong grower either. I wonder if this was just a sickly rose, or maybe my zone is a little to harsh for it. I was hypothisizing that, because it may not be fully hardy here, it was more prone to deseases.

I looked at my other roses to see if they had this stem problem. My DA rose 'Windermere' (which I just got this spring) seems to have a mild case of whatever this is...It has a little brown splotching just around the joints (where the leaf meets the steam).

Do you know what this is??? Oh, PLEASE tell me its nothing serious! Terribly sorry this is such a long post and that I cant get pics for you.

Could be downey mildew:

Could be black spot but I think you would see it on the leaves also.

Its the first one, downey mildew. The mildew part kind of relieves me, mildew can be a problem around here. But is this a serious problem in roses? Can it be treated?

The plant has no real drainage. No wonder the poor thing has flowered only once in 13 years. They have to water it sparingly. The other plants inside the store front are Aglaonema and Philodendron which appear to be growing fine. It's truly a case of plant torture on the vine. The Pandorea should go outdoors in summer. It's not receiving enough sunlight.

Maybe that's it, hills. But don't feel you've brought bad news; I haven't got a multiflora so either it's flat stem or multiflora, it's a thrill for me. I googled 'multiflora' and got this photo from myhoyas.com. It looks exactly like my plant - the buds, the multi-peduncles, the 'somewhat flat' stem. The only thing different is the leaf form - mine is a bit longer and narrower. Anyway, it still hasn't opened yet now at 5.45pm, my time. It's such a long wait! The Amarylliaceae (amaryllis, crinums, naked ladies, rain lilies and several dozen other bulb species) grow in this format - multiple leaves from a single growth point. And they do grow from a bulb. But they are not considered true lilies. (True lilies have bulbs with overlapping scales, other 'lilies' have bulbs like onions, with layers of tissue). I'd suspect your "lily" is one of these - literally hundreds of different plants have lily in their common name but are not truly lilies at all. Very confusing, I agree :-))

"But there is little sign of breakage." It could be they are less prone than various other hardwoods or softwoods. I think as a vague generality, slower growth = denser, stronger wood is a valid assumption. However at the end of the day a lever is a lever and the laws of physics are the laws of physics, if 1/2 the tree is weighted down with one force vector and 1/2 is weighted down with an opposing force vector, you are setting up a breakage scenario. Here's a picture I took of a tree in an off-limits part of Longwood; I was shown this by an employee at the time. The area of trunk disfigurement makes me wonder if a low trunk or two snapped off at some point. More I think about it the more I am inclined to be marvericky and try to single trunk it. Surely someone has a thought besides the esteemed (usually) Mr. Embothrium? Here is a picture of nightmarish frozen goop that caused so much damage. Ice morphed to sleet which morphed to wet snow. All of it stuck which was the problem. This Abies firma laughed it off course. And this picture was over 24h after the precip had ended, after a lot of the somewhat lighter, snowier constituents had sublimated or blown off.

Aliette is a recommended treatment. Not cheap, though.

Thanks hoovb. Is this desease considered a serious problem, or just unsightly? Will it kill the rose or cause it harm; what are the side effects (to the rose I mean)? Will it infect other roses?

I googled Downy Mildew on roses earlier and im now wondering if thats not it. There nothing wrong with its leaves; there are no splotches on the leaves, just the stems. I noticed this stem problem soon after it stopped flowering in spring, and it hasnt droped any of its leaves, as they said it would on one site.
I went out today to give it closer inspection. The stems seem rather weak; they bend easily and the white part in the center seems rather pithy. Some of the upper leaves are kind of elongated, and there are a few holes munched out, but im not sure if that has anthing to do with it.
I havent gotten any new growth (or reflowering) since spring, and this rose is supposed to bloom twice.
Do you think its downy mildew or something else entirely?
