What is the Most Fragrant Rose?
Comments (40)I have a poor nose. A rose has to have an overwhelming scent to get noticed by me. The list of OGRÂs that are fragrant is nearly endless. Just to mention a few that I have, The Apothecary, Hippolyte and Jacques Cartier. An old rose that is also fragrant but not I think classified as an OGR despite being old is Baltimore Belle. Its flowers indivdually are not that fragrant but enmasse become overpowering. It has literally hundreds of flowers each cluster with 10 or more buds. As IÂm in Zone 5 I no longer grow HTÂs of which many are bred for fragrance so that gang is not on my list. I notice that an alleged legendarly fragrant HT, Crimson Glory is not mentioned. Probably too old. I once tried to grow it but it tanked early....See MoreWhat are the most fragrant English roses, besides Jude?
Comments (15)I live in a much different zone than you. For me, Jude was an awful rose. Stingy with blooms and really didn't have much of a scent. I keep waiting to get a scent from Alnwick and I get nothing. It is making me wonder if I have the wrong rose. Since it is still a baby (I have only had him two years), he get a reprieve until next year. Evelyn is fabulous for scent as is Munstead Wood and Princess Alexandra of Kent. My favorite has to be Brother Cadfael. Scent to die for. Beautiful rose as well. It will make you swoon. Pretty Jessica also has a great scent. Ambridge Rose has a strong scent. I didn't particularly like it but my staff loved it....See MoreMost Fragrant Rose in your Garden??
Comments (59)Barbara's pasture, Irene ford, Elisabeths china, Grandmothers hat, madam anissette, Mary rose, golden celebration, angel face, and Julia child. Scentimental and duchesse de brabant have a decent fragrance also. I also have setzer noisette and have been told it has a strong musk/ floral scent but I'm not sure I can smell noisettes that well since It smells lightly to me . I also have copperopolis bar which was described as VERY fragrant, but it's a slow establishing rose that puts most of its energy into trying to bloom , so I haven't had many blooms to smell....See MoreWhat are your most fragrant roses today?

Looks like a keeper. mmmmm :) Totoro - in my old house, I planted DD, and I could smell it from 8 feet away....and I hated, hated the smell. I had to get rid of it. I like the smell of myrrh...but that one was disgusting. I bet if I grew it in a pot (it was in the ground), the fragrance would be more manageable. Carol...See More- 14 years ago
