Patrick, I don't know what it does with blackspot, but it is virtually immune to powdery mildew and rust.
We find that blooms can ball in cold, dank conditions. It wants some heat for best bloom opening.
Yes, all of the Cochets nod in a most elegant manner.

FWIW, I have heard some opinion that there really isn't a climbing form, just that the bush form can get very very big.
I do not know the truth of this, but I do know that the bush forms of the Cochets can, indeed grow very, very big.

Niles blooms pretty much all the time, tho it will slow down in real summer heat. I have not grown White Maman.

I have the bush form Patrick, and it is really lovely. It's about a year old now. Here are some flowers from when it was blooming.

The scent is typical tea. If your nose picks that up (and from your posts, I gather you have an extremely refined olfactory sense) you will love the scent: clean yet complex.

Hope this helps. I would not be without this rose if I lived in a climate where it could survive.

Sorry, I realize I did not answer many of your questions:

1. Fragrance, I talked about.
2. Growth...vigorous, angular (for the bush) and then filling in.
3. Blooms a lot here.

Size...if the deer had not thwacked mine repeatedly this past 6 weeks, I think it would be about 4.5' x 5' after 14 months in the ground. Now it's about 3.5 x 5.

The color is exactly right for this particular arbor. It will have THE MCCARTNEY ROSE to the left and MRS BR CANT to the right. Two very big, rich pink roses. TCR in particular is a deep cool pink. CWMC's delicate pink kissed white would be stunning against a black iron arbor separating the two large shrubs. Thank you so much Jeri and Jerome for responding so quickly.

I still want to hear from rosarians in the Mid-Atlantic and the South-Eastern United States. Folks in the Gulf States and Texas please feel free to chime in.

Hi Patrick,
In coastal NC, white MC grew from a band to cover my backyard swing/arbor in two seasons. She went up the end (4x8) and over the top, drooping down the sides. Hurricane winds left her disheveled but I rearranged and retied her and she continued to grow. BS was minimal. Bloom was also minimal, perhaps because the plant was young, I'd say a dozen blooms per flush was normal. The blooms are huge (typical Cochet) fluffy confections that dangle down through the arbor. Lovely. I believe you can find a pink/white climber that blooms more. I had clematis growing through mine for added interest.

This search is very frustrating!

AWAKENING - hardly any fragrance, vicious thorns.

CLIMBING CLOTILDE SOUPERT - flowers small, very prone to balling, mildew sometimes a problem.

CLIMBING SOUVENIR DE LA MALMAISON - stingy bloomer, flowers ball, gets black spot, pale flesh pink flowers are a little too "warm" in tone for the color scheme.

CLIMBING WHITE MAMAN COCHET - stingy bloomer.

DEVONIENSIS - yellowish white flowers would clash with the cool pink and white color scheme. Might be too tall.

MME. ALFRED CARRIER - defoliates from black spot, might be too massive for structure.

SOMBREUIL - ivory white flowers are a little "warm" for the cool color scheme. Gets some black spot.

The color is the most critical factor. If it isn't right the piece won't "flow" properly. That limits the above to Climbing Clotilde Soupert, Climbing White Maman Cochet, and Madame Alfred Carrier. Clotilde's flowers are too small and they ball. CWMC has EXACTLY the right color and form but is a stingy bloomer. MAC isn't disease resistant enough for a no spray garden.

So frustrating. I could just spit.

I'm not so sure it would be a stingy bloomer for you.
With your heat, ONCE THE ROSE IS MATURE, I can't believe it wouldn't bloom well.

I'm planting both CLIMBING CLOTILDE SOUPERT and CLIMBING WHITE MAMAN COCHET. One of each side of the trellis. I'll make a decision which one stays after three years.

Patrick,I can only share my experience in MD. Hopefully it will be better for you mom.
I never grew climbing form of WMC, but bush form was not so successful in my garden.
First, the spring flush always got severe case of botritis and balled. Then it was a long pause before next flush, which was destroyed by JBs anyway. The third (fall)flush again got botritis. I had WMC in my garden for 4 years and, I am not kidding, I got 5-6 opened blooms on it altogether. Everything else was balled or chewed up. These blooms were lovely. I had very similar experience with regular MC and Niles Cochet. In addition, all three needed regular spraying to keep leaves on. They were more BS prone then other 20+ different teas I grow or used to grow. It is not a location in the garden or my cultural practice. I have Mme Joseph Schwartz, Georgetown Tea and Safrano in the same places where Cochet family used to grow and all three are happy.
Sorry for being pessimistic.

I agree Patrick, I'd give it a try...if it works in that microclimate, you'll be one happy gardener. I'd give it a couple seasons to establish for repeat...though of all the Cochets here, White MC gave the most flowers of all from the very beginning.

Patrick, for what its worth, in my opinion one flower of white maman cochet might well be a worth its weight in gold. I have a small bush (I hope) and each time it blooms, I just can't take my eyes off it...It is gorgeous. Please keep us posted as it grows...Faye

Hello Patrick,

Climbing White Maman Cochet is capable, when it's cool, of producing lavender-into-cream colored blooms with a petal form that defines the word exquisite. The blooms do nod--not a problem on a large plant--in fact, a virtue on any rose taller than we are.

BS resistance was good in Louisiana's EZ bake steam oven environment.

Fragrance was moderate; rebloom fair-to-slow on a young plant. Growth was rapid but it's ultimately a large rose anyway. Relative to other large roses I'd say growth was probably average.

It was SP'ed at two years for reasons that had nothing to do with the rose itself.

I just had to log in in support of the Cochet roses. I have the white and regular ones (climbers) and absolutely love them. Many years ago Tom L. told me that the blooms were so beautiful they would make you cry. I thought that was so silly at the time but it is true.

This is a pic of the pink one. It was huge and I love it so much that I cut it back and dug it up when I moved. The white one grows the same for me, just a different color.

It sounds like you have made your decision, but wanted to add you might look at Harlekin or Kiss of Desire. Mine is very healthy, blooms well, I am always trimming it back. It is one of the few climbers that I have purchased that actually climb :)

and I like the scent.

It may not have the bloom form you are looking for however.

I think I had White Maman Cochet (mislabled as Chromatella years ago from a reputable nursery) I wanted Chromatella so bad I dug it up and out. One of the main reasons is that it was growing WAY too big for the spot I put it in, and it had a fair amount of room.

Funny thing is now I wish I had it back ;)
