Why graft roses onto rootsock?

What reasons are there for grafting roses on rootstock? Is it like fruit trees and vines - because the roots are susceptible to pathogens in the soil, or to influence the growth habit of the plant?

I would definitely lean towards getting own-root plants unless there was a reason that they wouldn't survive in my soil, or if they would sucker rampantly and take over the garden.

Any ideas?
