Pat Austin: small & compact choice if you have morning sun spot. I have 2 Pat Austins - one in 3/4 sun, the other in 1/4 sun - both fried when the temp. is over 80 degrees. She's gorgeous here in our cool and wet spring/fall when it's raining all day with temp. below 70's. Pat Austins bloom well in my alkaline clay if given lots of water.

Anne Boleyn - lots of people like this one, a light but good scent. Supposedly to be small.

Portmeirion - I spent lots of time researching this one since I need a dark-pink for my garden. The info. I found - someone stated, "not much scent, but a work-horse". I didn't buy it since it's thorny.

The Prince - I spent time researching this one. I changed my order and didn't get it, since my kid hates the color. The info I found: quite small & compact, morning sun only otherwise petals burn, great scent, good for vase, somewhat thorny. A Texan informed me that it does well in alkaline clay soil.

Strawberry, thanks for the info! Right now I don't have a morning sun spot for a rose, these will be getting pretty much full sun, and it sounds like that would be too much for it. I have alkaline clay, and most roses are fine with that. Don't like real thorny roses, so maybe Portmeirion wouldn't be a good choice. I love scented roses but a nice one would be fine without scent. Gotta keep looking. The nursery that's going to get some roses for me says they don't get DA's because people have told them they don't do well in our climate, but I know a lot of them do. Some people near me have an outstanding pink DA, and I need to stop by and introduce myself and ask them what it is.

eahamel. The only one from your list, that I grow in my hot and dry summers and mild wet winters is Pat Austin.
I cannot recommend her for a warm climate. She hates the heat. Each flower only lasts a couple of days. Mind you, she keeps making new ones all the time.
I love her, so I cosset her by giving her some shade. She is in a pot, so I feed her quite often too.
She has a wonderful scent, which is like ripe mangoes.

Far better for my heat, is, Lady Emma Hamilton.
She too has a wonderful perfume. She also flowers most of the year.
Mine is in full sun all day.

Don't have sugestions, but also wanted to say how much I enjoyed the pics Daisy's beautiful garden. Love your pics of Pat too. Is Lady Hamilton blackspot prone? I'm looking for a full petaled pink or peach or coral rose with good blackspot resistance without spraying.

I have Pat Austin and she grows great for me here in Illinois (without winter cover) too, Strawberry Hill and agree she is at her most beautiful in spring and fall. I also have The Prince and for me he's a little wimpy in size and shape, but those blooms are what I wait for every year. :-)

Hi eahamel: Chamblee has "Carefree Celebration", utterly gorgeous at the rose park. The bush glows like sunset. It gets my vote as the most beautiful bush at the park for compactness and great color. It's pretty even when blooms fade, that's how good the color is. It's ALWAYS blooming regardless of the weather, best disease-resistance.

Roses Unlimited in SC has "Lady Emma Hamilton" own-root. I agree that Daisy's pictures is awesome and LEH is a better choice than Pat Austin. Check out "Carefree Celebration" below, glossy dark foliage, superb disease-resistance, and glowing color like a sunset.

Carefree Celebration is coral color, 4.5' x 4.5', hardy to zone 4b. For a smaller orange bush, 2' x 2', check out mini-flora "San Francisco Sunset", bred by Sean McCann in Ireland. I got the OK from Kim Rupert as to Sean McCann's excellent work, so I'll order that from Burlington Roses for $7.50 per band.

My 4 minis bloom non-stop in 90-100's degree heat, full-sun. Minis bloom continuously in alkaline clay, much more than Austins. San Francisco Sunset is bigger than a mini, since it's miniflora, but it has a good strong spice scent and compact 2' x 2'.

Oh, I like that Carefree Celebration! Thanks for the suggestion - I'll be getting some roses from them in a few weeks and will add it to the list.

I looked at DA website and they have some that do well in southern heat, and Chamblee's has some of them, so I may pick one or two of them, too.
