Help Rose Friends! Is this herbicide damage? (multiple pictures)

Okay, I just noticed this weird growth on my "Not Heritage, Possibly Ludlow Castle" rose. All of the growth is coming off of one major cane. The house two houses up the street from me is for sale, and the owner who flipped the house has stopped by a couple times and sprayed Weed B Gone, spot treating weeds in the lawn.

I'm hoping that it's herbicide damage and not the dreaded RRD. If it is RRD, then it would be my first case since living here for 4 years. The leaves are thicked and pebbly, and the stipules are noticeably deformed.

Unfortunately it looks like RRD to me, but I'm not an expert. I'd probably cut that cane out and see if I could save the rest of the rose that way.

I forgot to add that I cut the cane off at the base shortly after taking the pictures.

Kate, I guess some one passed a county rule around here, but I personally can spray RU, if my gardener does (and does not have a current pesticide use permit/license/class) it is a $250 fine for the first offence. In the city gas powered leaf blowers are also off limits. I read a paper for a foo foo small town north of here, seems homeowners using hedge clippers on the weekend is also a big no-no and will have your neighbors calling the police on you. (makes their blotter reports several times each weekend)

I take it that only the top picture shows the growth that you are worried about. My guess is Roundup owing to the abundant but skinny growth, but that is just a guess. We need views from the side showing the structure of branching, a closeup of any excess thorniness, and a closeup of a whole leaf removed and laid flat, with a healthy young leaf of the same variety for comparison. It is not too early for a new plant to have RRD, although that makes it less likely.

I’m back. Sebastian has this habit of finding the noisiest item nearby and tapping it relentlessly until I see what he wants. He favors the plastic bag-lined wastebasket in my room. He’ll use anything he can find that’s in the same room I am. He first gives a few verbal requests, and then begins his tapping. He won’t stop until I see what he wants. He’s been asking for WAY too many treats lately, so I was telling him “No Sabby.” It turns out he wanted to be let into the garage to use what I call “Sabby’s Big Boy Potty”. He likes the big one without a cover, and uses that one if I’m nearby to let him in there. I’m almost always nearby, so I let him in and out frequently. The noisy tapping is minimal during the night, because I never entertain requests for treats or playtime in the middle of the night. He still tries occasionally:) I haven’t done the beer thing, but I have read about it. It’s not something I have on hand. I would love to use a scissors on my slugs Diane. Unfortunately, most are too tiny! They must have recently hatched, because some are little bigger than a pinhead. I did find a couple of big fat ones, so those two could have been snipped. When it’s warmer, my petunias get eaten to bits by little green worms. BT works well, but I dislike the hassle of spraying anything. BT is safe. I just dislike the mixing and spraying part itself. It has rained 3” over the past few days. That’s a huge amount for us, especially so late in the season. I went to my local nursery to get Sluggo Plus and maybe a few veggie starts or seeds, but they were just closing the gates to close early because of the rain. What a bummer. I ended up going to Home Depot, but they only had regular Sluggo in big jugs. I didn’t want such a large amount of regular Sluggo, since I have so many earwigs and pillbugs along with slugs and snails. I bought a small box of “scary” slug and snail killer, and I’ll use a little in the front, where Millie won’t get into it. I did score a case of paper towels there, so it wasn’t a total waste of time. By the time I got home, I was exhausted. Changing gloves and masks and wiping everything down is SO much work! I’m already a slow poke who limps along, but this situation has made me even slower. I’m not so sure I feel like braving the nursery today. I think Amazon might be the way to go. Lisa

Hahahah I went to our nearest garden Centre Terra just to see if they had a drift rose. That was my 2nd mistake. Next was going to look at the roses saw none that I wanted as I already had most of them. However I then saw the climbing roses on the next table that was 3rd mistake. :D Did a double take at seeing they had the coral dawn rose as that was the one I just saw online a few nights ago and was mesmerized by it then. That was my lst mistake!!! So upon seeing they actually had some for sale ended up getting one of them. You should see it now lots of buds on it so it must like where it is. Has 4 buds on it!!! Can hardly wait to see them. Gets the shade in the morning but around 2 or 3 pm gets the sun until it sets in the west. No such thing as the east side of our building as that is where the parking lot is. Also too in that garden they might toss the snow from the side walk and two third of that garden is like a disaster area with weeds, irises, black eyed susans all growing together in it. Gardeners the region hired never did clear it out instead went to the other one that this lady whom I got my keys for my apt when I moved in took out her mini hydrangea that she had in there for oh 10 years and my lone apricot drift rose. Then went out the back and did a number on the rhubarb. Lost one of the plants but the other 2 pulled through their ignorance. Region ended up firing them and they never got in anybody else after that to do them. Still have somebody come and cut the grass out the back but that is it.

It's not herbicide. It looks like RRD with at least five different symptoms (and the stipules are really hideous. The stem's growth is favoring one side, growing in an exaggerated spiral. Compared to the other cane, every leaf axil has broken. The leaves on the breaks are too close, short internodal distance. You're getting a leaf mottle pattern as well.)
And your instincts were good to remove that cane.
Now I want you to watch the bush very closely: for bad growth where that cane might have touched the one close to it, and more likely, the very bottom of the bush. Often, if we don't get it cut off early enough, it gets into the roots and from there goes elsewhere.
The bad thing is that one was a really active cane and may have had a lot of action in the phloem and xylem of that cane and its support system.

Thank you Ann. Ugh, I looked at the cane further before I bagged it and it had new sprouts lower down on the cane. I checked the rest of the rose and the roses around it and didn't see any aberrant growth. I usually inspect my roses closely, I don't know how I could have let it go this long. I guess I was looking more for the big red witches broom. I'll definitely be keeping a hawk eye on it. A lot of my roses are putting on normal growth now.

Well, I guess I don't have to worry about if it will come here, since it's apparently here. Hopefully it was an isolated incident, like I said, 1st case in 4 years, so I don't think I have terribly high disease pressure.

Blackcatgirl, it's Rose Rosette Disease, a lethal disease spread by mites. I just dug out my second plant with it yesterday and am starting to wonder about some others. :-(

Thanks Carol and Terry. I think I'm going to play it safe and go ahead and dig the whole thing up. I wasn't terribly attached to the rose, and I'd like to reduce to the risk to nearby roses like The Dark Lady...which I really DO like. And, what do you know, that opens a space for a new rose :)

Eric - It is awful to lose a recent or small rose to RRD. However, to lose a landscape size 15 to 20 yr plant is severely devastating. Our hope is that this disease will find a cure some day, but it is slow enough to persist for our lifetime otherwise. It is yet another reminder that you have to be tough to garden, but remain joyful for the beauty of that which persists through it all. Best, Nick
