propagating spinosissimas with cuttings

Last year I got a cutting of William III from a friend. Seven months later it was not only still alive it had produced 4 laterals. I was really quite happy with myself at that point. Now normally you wait until you see roots coming out of the holes in the bottom of the pot before transplanting the cutting. Although this never happened with my William III I reasoned that if it was still alive and putting out laterals it must also be producing roots. I carefully took it out of the pot and to my shock there was not even one tiny root. I could not even see any with a magnifying glass.

Has anyone ever had any success propagating cuttings of any of the small Scots roses? Has anyone had any success propagating through cuttings any of the larger R. spinosissima altaica hybrids such as the Fruhlings series? The only success I've ever had with this group of roses was with Robbie Burns. I took eight cuttings of it one year and one rooted. Several years later it is still alive in my garden.
