Any Hardy Climber for my zone?

Hi all. I live in NE Ohio. I planted 6 climbers this past spring. Well, being a total newbie, I didn't realize the roses I bought were for zones 6b to 9b. I live in zone 5b! They probably won't survive the winter here. :(

It was suggested that I try Knock Out Roses, which are very hardy in my zone. However, I have put in a huge trellis, so I want climbers and not shrub roses.

Any suggestions as to what CLIMBING rose is very hardy and disease resistant in my zone?

Look at the Candian Explorers:
John Cabot
Quadra
Capn Sam Holland
John Davis
William Baffin

I am in 5a/6b and my mature John Cabot is hardy to the tips and about 6-7' tall. I have the others on my list growing in my garden, but they are not as mature yet. They are also fully hardy.

OK, thanks for the info. I know I can't plant them till spring, but I would be good to know anyway.

I lived and gardened in zone 4 for over 20 years and have grown about 20 of David Austin's roses. Mary Rose was indeed the cane hardiest, sometimes requiring little pruning in spring. Others like Heritage, had to be cut back almost to the ground but would bounce back to 3 to 4 ft. tall and bloom like mad all summer. Really, the most important thing is to plant them deeply and keep them healthy. A healthy rose going into a severe winter can withstand so much more than a feeble, diseased rose. Of the varieties I have grown, only Molineaux died in its first winter for me, but I had heard it was more tender being a yellow, plus mine was a small own root plant. OTOH, Graham Thomas on its own roots has been hanging in there for me for 9 years now. I just moved it this summer to my new home in zone 5 and I'm hoping it is even happier here. It certainly bloomed like crazy since it got relocated. Of the more recent releases, Munstead Wood has been a real winner.

I'm not sure about southeastern Pennsylvania but there are some newly introduced begonias that are fairly hardy, and some older ones are turning out to be hardier than anybody realized. Among the hardier species are B. emeiensis, B. formosana, and B. pedatifida. 'Torsa', 'Little Brother Montgomery' and 'Connee Boswell' are older hybrids that have turned out to be fairly hardy. Most of these will survive a mild winter in zone 7; a cold winter (and our last several have been quite mild!) is probably another story entirely. The key is to start with healthy, well-grown plants, get them in the ground early in the growing season, plant deeply, and mulch in the fall. As long as the rhizomes don't freeze, many will return. I would also suggest getting in touch with the Delaware Valley Branch of the American Begonia Society to meet fellow begonia growers and obtain new plants. Thanks vaporvac! JL like most climbers has a heavy flush of blooms in June, and sporadic thereafter. It can get pretty tall with beautiful pink flowers. I've had mine for at least 15 years. There's another climber that blooms for a long time in my garden and it's Super Excelsa. It starts blooming later in the season, but it continues blooming right up until frost. Boston Ivy has large glossy leaves. But it is deciduous. I don't think the large leaved Hederas would be hardy for you.

Gah, I'm in 6a/5b. And spacey! :-)

So what climbers did you plant before? I do grow a few out of zone climbers, and while they don't climb because of annual dieback, they do make OK shrubs.

Those are pretty roses... None of the Canadian roses have big HT blooms like that, unfortunately.

High Country Roses sells most of the Canadian Explorer and Morden roses, granted they are own root. If you can grow roses grafted on multiflora, Pickering or Hortico might be a good place to find them.

I am trying Awakening, Leverkusen, Dortmond, Autumn Sunset, and Antike 89, which are said to be cold hardy climbers. They are only a couple years old, and own root, so I don't know yet how they will fare as climbers. Illusion and Ramblin' Red are supposed to be cold hardy reds (I don't grow them). Shropshire Lad (or is it Generous Gardener??) is planted in an exposed location and seems to want to climb.

Rosarium Uetersen is definitely worth a try. Roberta Bondar should work for you as well. New Dawn is nice as well.

Felix Leclerc is a fairly new Canadian rose that apparently has 4-inch blooms. Pretty large for a Canadian rose.

I grow several in 5a. Illusion is hardy and disease resistant. Bright red flowers that are very double. Mine took 6 years to get going. I nearly gave up on it. Others have also been slow. Rosarium Uetersen is very hardy, has fabulous flowers, great shape and color. Then there is Sympathie a beautiful red flower. And Ilse Krohn Superior. It is the biggest so far growing up over my arbor. But the flowers are very much HT shape which are not my favorite.

My John Cabot was perhaps abandoned too soon but it never did much and had very plain flowers. John Davis I've heard might be better.

Mexican Hat - I grow Leverkusen, Dorrtmund, Autumn Sunset, and Antike 89, as well as New Dawn (from which Awakening sported). Of your list, only Dortmund and sometimes New Dawn are cane hardy. Leverkusen, Autumn Sunset and Antike 89 are only cane hardy to the snow line. However, they all spring back nicely in June and are quite healthy. John Davis, Alexander Mackenzie, and William Baffin are cane hardy climbers for me. Some other climbers that I grow but that suffer some cane dieback in the winter but come back nicely in the spring are Ramblin' Red, Morgengruss, Westerland, St. Swifton, James Galway, Abraham Darby, Pierre de Ronsard, and America.

Karen, thanks for the info. I put Antike 89 in a protected location by an entryway and really hope it will be somewhat cane hardy. How is your rebloom on Dortmund? I wouldn't mind moving the Jude on the opposite side of the entry, if I can figure out a good, bloomiferous climber to put there. I do have Awakening planted nearby. Jude's blooms ball up all Spring, but he sure looks pretty this time of year. Do you grow Louise Odier? I wonder if she'd make a nice 6' pseudo-climber?

I am also growing America Cl. and it gets to about 6' by end of summer. Great color! Abe D. hasn't gotten tall yet... I'd like to try Alex MacKenzie, too, if I can find room. I'm almost out of space - scary thought!!

Dortmund has a pretty good rebloom as long as I keep it deadheaded. It is amazingly disease free in my garden. Don't you love Jude? So fragrant! Alex MacKenzie takes up quite a bit of room. I don'[ grow Louise Odier, although I have been adding some more old garden roses this year. Rose de Resch has been my favorite so far, as it has never been out of bloom all summer and quite disease free. Hope that kind of performance continues!

Strange, I haven't heard of anyone on the forum yet mention that they are growing Social Climber or Scent from Above.
I wonder if someone is and if they are having luck with them.
They look pretty good, looked gorgeous in the spring when they first leafed out.
They have some BS on them now, no more JB's (thankgod for that!) and I'm spraying for the BS on Monday. I have to wait for Monday before it cools off enough to spray.
