When did you plant them?

Hello, I can't answer your question on what disease you have on your roses, but, I will make a suggestion.
I notice lots of leaf litter under your roses. When leaves become infected with a fungus and drop to the ground, these dead leaves have fungus spores on them. When you water your roses or it rains, the water hits these spores on the dead leaves and splashes them back up into your rose bush and further infects other leaves or canes.

Pic #1 doesn't look like anything to worry about unless there are a lot of similar leaves. Just pull it off. The brown margins suggest fertilizer burn or (if you are inland) heat/moisture stress.

Are the canes actually dying back, or are you cutting them off because you see these spots on them?

Are you right on the coast with very cool summers? I assume no rain, but do the roses go to bed wet from the sprinklers or anything like that? Have younger leaves been dying and dropping in quantity?

Have you sprayed anything (such as foliar fertilizer) that may have damaged the young leaves in pic. #5?

Just trying to narrow it down.

hoovb, I planted them this Spring and a few before it got hot this summer. I so wish I hadn't pruned all the other damage.

Jim, the leaves are from a giant Eucalyptus and there is no way to clean them up. They drop incessantly. I don't have mulch on this bed in the pic yet. But I do in the others and am having the same problem. (Mulch makes it even more impossible to clean the leaves up.) This I thought was going to be the big test for the roses if they could handle the Eucalyptus oil. In retrospect I have had roses in pots for years even under the Eucalyptus and they have never had a problem. At least not what I am seeing now.

Pic #1 those leaves are randomly spread around Pillow Fight. I think there was some on it when I bought it a few months ago. I have seen this on my clmb. Iceberg I have had for years and always remove the leaves quickly. I just never knew what it was? I have some leaves like this on my 60" Route 66 trees, randomly also.
OK, Golden Celebration is not Golden Celebration SORRY It is Midas Touch HT (bare-root this last Spring) Picture 5 and 6. The canes end up turning yellow I cut them off before they hit the bud union. Being that they are new, and me too, I thought maybe they would change back. lol But the yellow would continue down with the leaves dying along the way. All that have been effected are roses from J&P from both batches I bought bare-root. BUT now it seems to be hitting others. Another BUT, not my roses I have had for years. Even the ones I put in the ground this year out of their pots in the beds with the effected ones.
I haven't had much leaf drop at all.
I may have been watering to late. It has been so dry here...
The only thing I have sprayed is hort oil (in the evening when it's cool) and a while ago alfalfa tea.

I was more concerned about infected rose leaves, not the
Eucalyptus leaves.

I agree picking up damaged rose leaves can be time consuming, but doing this will reduce the risk of spreading disease. Black spot fungus, spider mites, and other 'enemies' on fallen leaves can jump back onto plants.

The hort oil might be responsible for the vague spotting of leaves and soft stems. I have seen burn damage that looks like that. Any oil is liable to burn in hot weather.

If it's hot and new leaves aren't dying, then it isn't downy mildew, which is a cool weather disease.

Dieback like you describe is probably not something we can diagnose from long distance, but the plants may outgrow it. Be sure you don't get paranoid and prune off functioning canes. Canes do change color in their second season.

jim1961 and jmac_2008, There are not any rose leaves on the ground there. I am really good about that.

Michaelg, I am taking a step back from pruning what I am seeing now and observing. :-) I so wish I could get better pictures. I am very careful about timing with hort oil but we have had some consistent heat so I won't use it and see. When I think about it there has been a good amount of humid days, watering late may be not the way to go. So I will water early in the day. There is a bit of Powdery Mildew in each rose area. Also much to my chagrin the 8 NorEast minis had/have spot anthracnose and now a couple Austins have it. They looked fine upon arrival then BAM! I had never had this here. Believe it or not I have never had blackspot. I saw it for the first time with an order I received from another place. Guess newbie here is being "broken in". Hopefully after removal of the spotted leaves the climate here won't to host it? I know wishful thinking. I do keep new rose in a separate area for observation.

I will watch the canes and write down the way the damage progresses. I forget easily if I don't.
I am hoping they will outgrow it also. Been a bit disheartening. Why don't any of the rose problems ever look like the pictures in the books or websites? Drives me batty. I do have some success stories too. Just not as many for the work put in. Ya know........

Eucalyptus leaves can be phytotoxic. The effects of this appear to vary under different conditions so it's not clear how much difference it would make to successful rose growing. As a native Californian, my knee jerk response is to not allow any eucalypts near anything I want to grow successfully, but this is undoubtedly an oversimplification.

Yes, I understand you keep your rose litter cleaned up allison64. My wording used wasn't the best...LOL
Actually when we use to grow certain shrubs here I left the leaf litter lay around to compost.
Roses are a whole different animal though.

I really do not see having Eucalyptus leaves on the ground as being the problem with your roses. But, who knows?

Think of it this way: We learn more when things go wrong with our plants.

Allison, I hope all your roses pull though. You seem to be on track to resolving these issue. Even though I'm in a relatively arid climate, watering in the AM vs the late afternoon or evening has made a noticeable improvement in my rose garden. I try to avoid overhead watering in the evening, especially from lawn sprinklers. Best wishes.

The one thing that has been a constant is the ants. I wouldn't doubt that they could spread fungus just by walking through it on one and on to another rose. I know they farm aphids. Mine do for sure. But I haven't had an aphid problem. I figure with all the ant activity in every rose bush/plant, I would have tons of aphids! I couldn't find any info on ants spreading disease.

Nickelmumz, The one bed in the pic I can rake those out. And did. :-) I did start off by picking them out of the mulch in the other beds....not gonna happen. Believe me I have been brain storming on how to do this. Wetting the mulch letting the leaves dry and blow them off. Need a blower to try this though.

Yes, Jim I am learning that's for sure. And I am enjoying it immensely! I just got my first bloom on my Ashdown Awakening. Talk about Niiiiice! That is so cool considering the trip here and being repotted loke 4 weeks ago at most! (And none of the other crud on it.)

Jmac, the hard part is wondering why, of course. I took a lot on in a short period of time. Pretty typical of me. :-P All or nothin' baby! I really enjoy watering in the cool evening. But to rule that out as being at least part of the issue I will enjoy it earlier in the day! Could be worse, I could have cottontails!
