Are some colors 'all different' and others 'all the same?'

I have been thinking about colors for a new bed and in consideration, I started to think about variations on colors within the bed. For example, if I choose purple, there is lavender, medium purple and dark purple (like Ebb Tide). For orange, there is vivid, yellowish (Livin' Easy) or apricot, etc.

That leads me to the question: do most red roses look pretty similar? I know the form might be different, but don't they sort of all look alike? I was thinking that about white also. There is white with a yellowish center but don't a lot of white roses look similar? Or is this just my lack of experience?

I know there are singles, doubles, ruffles, etc. within each color, of course. Does anybody know what I mean?

As far as interacting with other colors, whites and off-whites are pretty much the same. However, there's an important distinction between "modern" reds (flag red or slightly to the orange side of that) and crimson reds that have some blue in them. Also the latter are more changeable and may show medium cerise red, dark true red, or dark purplish red in different weathers. There is also the flourescent cerise range that might include Alec's Red, Knock Out, and edging of Double Delight. These different reds have a radically different look in the garden.

Not all whites are the same, nor are all reds. In my backyard I've aimed to have a white garden, but some of the flowers are more ivory/cream while others are white-white (more of a stark contrast). But that doesn't bother me, but if you were trying to go with the house trim or something, this might influence your decision.

I got Ruby Vigorosa roses for my front yard thinking they were going to be red-red, veering toward the orangy red. Well, with the heat those suckers are dark pink (and in lots of heat, actually fade to pale pink). But in winter they're such a dark-dark pink that they go for pale red. Sometimes it really is better to see a rose in your local environment then having to trust pictures and people on the phone to describe a color. Just my two cents.

Hi, I like the yellows like aztec gold and pink shades. 2008 I have bought cuttings and plants of several rainbow colors to enjoy all the shades, are young plants need to grow. Hope my plumie garden will have them all someday. Karen B

I agree with jerseygirl and live with the space for awhile before committing major changes and you can do an accent wall if there's not a good place for change of paint color. I'm in the process of picking colors with 5 rooms connecting and another 2 thru doors/doorways. I love saturated color. I have 4 reds on my DR wall and will pick one when I pick the copper in the sitting room (3 choices on wall) and greens (4 choices) in the office. The kitchen is already Hawthorne yellow and the half bath is Blue Lapis. The music room will be the 2 lilac colors that got rejected from the sitting room. I'm tying all the rooms together with the same color trim - white dove. My 185 year old fire places are all different marbles - gotta try to strip one that was painted. The main rooms have natural oak floors and the minor rooms fir (over 100 years old). I'm not too worried about the other woods in the rooms - I just make it work for that room. I have cherry in my kitchen, mahogany in the DR, and black walnut doors. I've been living with 3' x 4' paint swatches for weeks until something speaks to me. The 1st time I threw up lilac in the sitting room I knew it was wrong. I had some friends who are good with color help me pick another scheme (copper). I have a dark purple couch and chair for that room. Even though one color might work great in one room with the furniture, they all need to play "nice" together when viewed from room to room. I picked a red I love but I don't know how it will play with the green and copper so I'm holding off until i figure out the other rooms. I did start with a designer to help me narrow down my choices so I can get painting sooner. (I could have probably done it but it would have taken me a year!) She kept saying "This is so much fun, I should be paying you." What she suggested is have one tying feature - for me it's the same color trim from room to room.

Personal opinion. If you look at the kitchens deco posted i think they look nice enough but would both have been even better with the same counters, i dont think the different perimeters add anything (except some visual chaos) in either case. Agree. One other thought. If I hadn't found my busy and exciting quartzite, i would have picked a very quiet stone or a plain quartz, paper stone, etc and then done an interesting backsplash with color.

Mike, I'm so glad that you took some cuttings! And I'm also glad that you got a good price for the motherplant - worth every penny. Yours is the largest of this type that I've ever seen. I believe it has now been identified as Crassula ovata variegata 'Lutea.' Very, very similar to 'Lancaster,' which I also got from you. Both of my plants are doing well, and you'll be happy to know that I've given away many cuttings to friends and family over the years. Stush, your variegated Jade is the Japanese type known as Mikaeri Bijin or 'Return of Beauty.' It is a fantastic variety.

There are 18 color classes. Within each class there are variations like pale, medium and dark.

Take a Medium Pink rose "Belinda's Dream" I would consider it a 'light medium pink' especially when compared with other medium pink roses that are darker...

There is no way to know what a specific colored rose will look like in your garden, in your climate, with your soil until it is planted there for awhile.

So I would say that all colors are different, even those that are supposed to be similar, however, some that are supposed to be different often end up looking the same, [i.e. rose de rescht (deep pink) looks identical to Winsome (mauve) in my yard...] it just really depends...
