Snake bite ?

I found the hose spraying water at 2 this afternoon, I saw it at 10 this morning with no leak. Could there be another explanation?

Blowout-If it was in the hot sun,valve opened .

Yes the valve was open, yes its hot and sunny, but what about the two punctures? Don't get me wrong, I really like your explanation. I have 2 small children and I just want to feel safe again. Thanks!

Maggie, As for finding the cure for Cloud, I have a book called 'Ducks & Geese in your Backyard' by Rick and Gail Luttmann. There is a section in there about 'Disease of young waterfowl' and thats where I found the symptoms for 'New duck syndrome'. I google for other diseases with those symptoms and found another disease, different name but same cure so, I went for it and it seems to have worked. The Luttmanns also wrote two other books called' Chickens in your Backyard' and Gail Luttmann wrote 'Raising Milk Goats'. They are great books, easy to read and very handy. As for the two pair of geese and the ganders fighting, that wasn't me. You may remember though, about 6 or 7 weeks ago my 4 year old steped on one of our goslings' flipper and you recomended the splay leg treatment if it didn't correct itself in a few days. fortunately it did correct it self but now can't remember if it was Cloud or Gossy. So I'm in a tough spot with no male mate for Cloud and the hatchery I bought them from are out of Toulouse and any other geese until spring. I've been combing the hatcheries to see if I can get another 2 males and 2 females quickly so that in the fall thru spring, Cloud dosen't fly off looking for a mate. I'm in Texas and I'm not sure Toulouse geese would fly off anyway. She haas 5 other ducks the same age as she, and they're a very close group, to keep her company though. Wow that is a nasty bite. I was thinking about this (people not realizing they were bitten) and there are some people who have neuropathy (nerve damage) from diabetes or other diseases that might not realize they were bitten if a lot of venom wasn't injected for whatever reason. They might not feel the initial pain of the bite but the effects of the venom as they became ill. I got bit by a brown recluse spider one time and didn't know I was bit until the ulcer showed up. I don't have any reason for getting an ulcer on my leg and I was young and healthy. Then I remembered seeing the recluse spider when I was moving some boxes in our basement. Luckily it healed okay. It is common not to feel recluse bites though. Some people are allergic or get infections from them though and that's when the trouble starts. ~sjn

Seven days is hardly enough time. We don't own 'our' cabin but we get the same week every year in the same cabin. The Forest Service owns the land but Bill leases it. He's had it for 27 years and runs it very well. He lives in San Francisco in the winter as the lodge is covered in up to 10' of snow and the road gets closed. We're still 'newbies' and this was our 19th year. One guy, Dan, has been going to Packer since he was 4 years old. His daughter is 16. Since the same people are there at the same time each year, we've become very close friends with the people in the other cabins. Some live close enough to see a few times a year, others drive for hours and hours. We started off in a sleeping cabin when Max was 2 yo, and worked our way up to a housekeeping cabin. (Took 9 years). We are always on the list for more time but hardly anyone ever gives up their time so 8 years later, we're still waiting. We're even willing to move to another cabin for a few nights. Many people do that. Say, 7 days in 'Woodchuck', then move to 'Aspen' for 3 more nights. Our housekeeping cabin costs about $100.00 per night. Deposits are sent in March. Way cheaper than a time share but it kind of works the same way. One night we have a (self organized) sing a long, another night the lodge hosts 'Italian' night with Bingo afterwards. 10 cents a card and winners take all. We all look forward to seeing each other and catching up on our year. It's our slice of Heaven, that is for sure. It makes some high end resorts look kind of like Disneyland to us. LOL! We'll take the bugs any day. It's like Yosemite without tons of people. No cell phones, computers, radios or TV. We decided the best deal in the USA is a deck of playing cards. And they are still made here. Woo!

Mazer maybe meant well, because I do agree that all living things have a right to live, but I have to say that were I bmmalone, I too would be somewhat offended by Mazer's tone. We live where there are copperheads and rattlesnakes, and we do not believe in needless killing of these poisonous snakes the various times we see them when we are in the forest around our home, and have given them lots of space upon seeing them and left them in peace. But it sure is not practical and rather shortsighted to say they "deserve to remain in their environment" and to put down someone who says otherwise, when that environment becomes my back yard where pet or very young child can innocently approach this potentially dangerous snake and be harmed. Yes---we make sure in our yard that the grass is always cut short and that there are no piles of brush, etc. that would encourage any snake from having a place to hide right in the yard, but the two times in the last 15 years that we did see a copperhead (one time) and rattlesnake (another time) right in the yard very close to the house, it was not difficult to make the decision to kill them. At times, we have also seen black snakes but since the consequences of a bite from them would not put life or limb in danger we would not think of killing them. (Yes---we do know personally a man who lost his arm from the bite of a poisonous snake). It is so easy to pass judgement on others, but it sure is much different when the reality is what it is.

Sure does look like 2 bite marks from a poisonous snake. Non poisonous snakes donÂt have fangs, but many small teeth, so their bite marks show numerous indentations, while the poisonous snakes have two fangs on the top jaw. You may also want to make sure the kids didnÂt play tricks on you.

As why the snake bite the hose, I can only think that as the hose got hot under the sun, the snake thought that was a prey, as a snake hunt for food by sensing the heat radiated from the prey.

A circular patch of hose surrounding the two punctures seems to be abraded away, how would a snake manage that? From the position of the two punctures, a snake would have had to straddle the hose while biting. I'd like to see a snake manage that!

If its just laying on an open yard,on top of grass,it would be highly unlikely that a snake would be out there in the heat of the day as they are cold blooded animals and the sunlight can kill them.
Also the marks being perpendicular is suspect.Should be parallel if snake.
Who removed the cover?
It looks like a weak spot where pressure builtup but would expect bigger holes.

It is not a snake bite, no matter how big. I think the cut was there for a while, see the discoloration on the edges of the cut and with the constant water pressure, and with it laying in the hot sun. Voila! Blowout.
Now you can rest and not worry about your kiddies playing in the yard. T

Snakes are cold blooded and they gather sun energy by absorbing heat from the sun. Pete hasnÂt seen a snake sun bathing in mid day.

I donÂt think the snake needs to straddle the hose; their bodies are more than flexible to take a bite in any position. Why would the snake bite right into the circular patch? Maybe the kids know. May or may not be a snake, but hose usually doesnÂt burst from two perfect holes like that. When the water is turned off, you wonÂt see the holes like in the photo.

Pete lives in snake paradise.If temp below 85 they will be out sunning at 100 plus at ground level heat of the day-they won't.

It wasn't a snake,the poison would have no effect on a hose.If you look closely you can see it was a weakspot that gave way-we were joshing about the snake.
