damage from chilli thrips

I have been battling leaf notcher weevils and BS and is really a challenge now I have chilli trips. I just bought Conserve hope this works! I cannot claim to be an expert on chilli thrips, but I know how we control them, and how most successful programs work -- they are based on soil-applied imidacloprid as the primary control measure. Then supplemental sprays with unrelated chemicals help prevent any build-up of resistance to the imidacloprid. It works very well. There appear to be a few roses that at least tolerate them, if not being actually resistant -- 'Mrs. B. R. Cant', 'Trinity', 'Smith's Parish' 'Tausentschoen'. Probably lots of others. Unfortunately, some of the most otherwise carefree roses (Belinda's Dream, all of the Knock-Out series, Don Juan) are unusually susceptible.

It is best, in my opinion, to buy from a bamboo nursery since I've seen bamboo for sale at Home Depot among other places, and it was mislabeled. You would not want to buy a running bamboo by accident. Yes, Bambusas are clumping bamboos. You need to decide on how much room the plant will have and how large of a plant you want. Bambusas height range is from 3 feet to over 70 feet. Here, B. oldhamii grows to over 40 feet, but it is very erect/upright, so it does not need a lot of space. Here is a pic of some oldhamii I had in 14 inch pots and the boo grew to over 22 feet. This is a pic of a hammock in between two oldhamii plants in my yard. The culms get just over 4 inches thick. Another tall Bambusa, and probably the most cold hardy, is B. textilis of which there are smaller varieties also. In my yard, with vegetation competing for sunlight, B. textilis gets to about 45 feet but in the pic below where it is out in the open, it grows to about 30 feet max. This was taken during the drought but I did give it some extra water. Runners will not die in a drought, no matter how severe. Most clumpers will survive also, but die back. It depends on the type of soil you have the bamboo in as to how hard a drought is on the plant. Sunburst Bamboo is a smaller but very pretty bamboo but is still rare and can be kind of expensive. Look into Bambusa eutuldoides 'Viridivittata' and Bambusa pervariabilis 'Viridistriatus'...two of my favourites for colour, striped leaves and are quite cold hardy. Yes, they're back. (spelling correction). Pam, thanks. It was pretty inevitable that they'd show up with hot weather. But I'm really liking the things I'm replacing the susceptible plants with. Jim, thanks for telling us how you're dealing with them. The thing is I don't generally use chemical insecticides and besides I'm very sensitive to imidacloprid which is the active ingrediant in most systemic drenches as far as I know. The last two times I used it to drench some plants I was passing along I was very, very careful in mixing, using disposible rubber gloves, a mask and holding my breath, but somehow I still got it on my skin. Then the area it gets on tingles and feels numb for hours and my lungs feel quite uncomfortable when I didn't even smell it. It's strong stuff! -- for this body anyway. Carrie, chilli thrips have been reported in the Dallas area, but they are probably not as prevelant as they are down south. It would be interesting to hear if anyone if anyone in the area notices them. Three days of temps below 25 is supposed to do them in, but they could survive the winter in a greenhouse, or come in on plants purchased although I think growers are treating plants before offering them.. They're susceptible to spinosad which is considered an organic insectide, but they are developing resistance to it. I'm still hoping that a beneficial insect shows up eventually to keep them under control. Yesterday I noticed that new leaves of the pink polka dot plant, fire spike and root beer plants are curling. Not a good sign. It's recommended that new foliage showing damage be cut back and put in plastic bags instead of adding them to the compost pile. Chilli thrips are not the end of the world. We just have to try and control the outbreaks the best we can and not expect undamaged leaves and blooms on everything we grow.

Thanks for the post, I'm trying to understand how to battle my recent chilli thrips infestation, it is such a devasting pest. Spinosad sold at the big box stores isn't doing much since the concentrations aren't very high. You have to get the real deal directly from Dow AgroChemical at $150+ a quart. As much as I hate to do it, I will try alternating with an imidacloprid soil drench and foliar spray, apparently, it will also attract their predators. I've already been losing roses to gophers (some are being resurrected back to life) and I don't want to lose anymore to other pests. Quote from University of Florida Dept. of Entomology: "Various formulations of imidacloprid used as either soil drench or foliar application provide effective control of Scirtothrips dorsalis without harming natural control agents. Imidacloprid suppresses Scirtothrips dorsalis populations for many days (Seal et al. 2009b). Spinetoram gives the best result when used as a foliar application and imidacloprid as soil drench (Seal et al. 2008). In addition, these two insecticides when applied as above allow the continuous growth and development of natural enemies of S. dorsalis."

For damage that extensive, I'd suggest Sevin. Apparently there is some controversy over it, which I appreciate, but no WAY would I let some pest destroy all my roses like that.

The downside to routine use of Sevin is that it actually increases spider mite populations. It does so because it has no effect at all upon them, but it kills their predators.

Therefore if you have a spider mite problem using Sevin will only make that worse.

(It also kills honeybees, but so do many insecticides.)

I have used carbaryl(liquid seven) for leaf notchers but it didn't work on them I now am using conserve for the chilli thripe if I don;t spray my roses will die! I really don;t like to spray but I want my roses.

looking at those pictures, I am not convinced that is chili thrip damage. We just had our first infection here in Lafayette, Louisiana last week and looked at a lot of infected roses and all had new growth which looked like herbicide damage and leaves that had a brownze look especally on the undersides that looks like chemical burn. The brownze look comes from the chili thrip rasping back and forth to break the skin of the plant so they can suck out the juices. The leaves are also curled up like. We are using conserve, merit and acepate. Good luck.

Thanks all for your imput and gracious concern. I took leaves and some buds to local nursery for ID they were the ones who told me chilli thrips. I had this damage even before I sprayed. It actually started with my double knockouts. I have had this for a few months but have been spraying for bs and other bugs so I suspected chemical burn also so I stopped spraying for a while and pruned bushes. The new growth and buds were deformed if open at all, and leaves were crinkled and really small and funky looking.I used conserve this am. Hope this works!
