That's exactly what they told me at RU when I bought it (or was it Ashdown?) Anyway, "Due-Shay" with a sort of French sounding accent not like we'd say "Do Shay" here in Georgia!

Ducher is French and I pronounced it the French way (Due-Shay being a good visual guide), but when I spoke with one of the big nurseries they did pronounce it as though it rhymed with "Crutcher." Go figure.

Ducher is a major name in rose production. The Ducher come from around Lyon in France and if you do a HMF seach you will see that they created hundred of great roses since the mid 19th century.

Fabien Ducher is a young rose producer who still is in the rose nursery business near Lyon. I find it exciting to buy roses such as Cécile Brunner or William Allen Richardson from Ducher himself!

I work at the parks board in a city outside of Lyon (Saint-Priest) and we are starting to see some local roses in the parks, which is really great.

Another great name in the rose world, Guillot, is still represented in Saint-Priest, and they produce roses not too far from here either...how lucky can one be?

Fabien Ducher spoke at the HRF conference at Hearst Castle. He was delighted to see all of the examples of Mlle Cecile Brunner, especially the ones trained up the palm trees in the castle gardens. He commented on Ducher as one that he was especially proud his family produced, because it is a fragrant, white China, still unique. (Yes, you need to get it.) He is breeding roses still today, trying to get a yellow untainted by the black spot genes that Pernet-Ducher introduced using R. foetida.

We all were charmed by him and his lovely wife, Florence.

Because Tea roses have none of the R. Foetida genes which introduced blackspot into modern rose breeding, is there
any chance Fabian Ducher might be hybridizing new yellow Tea class roses, perhaps by crossing such Old Garden Teas as 'Lady Hillingdon' with 'Pierre Soupert et Notting'? or "Etoile de Lyon'?
I'm curious because now there are millions of gardeners who now live in warmer climates where Tea class roses thrive.

For English, the closest would be dew-SHAY or due-SHAY as some have spelled the first syllable. The first syllable is definitely not "do." The problem is there is no equivalent in English for the French u. If interested, google the phrase "how to pronounce french u" and follow some links. But "due" or "dew" are definitely closer than "do." (French also has the vowel sound of ooo as in the cow went mooo, but it's always spelled "ou" as in touché. Incidentally, there is a quite common French word "doucher" which means to give someone a shower or same in English--douche.)

The closest in English for Pernet would be pair-NAY. Again, not exact, this time because of the r, which in French sounds like a slight clearing of the throat--uvular r, I think they call it.

P.S. If the distinction between French "u" and "ou" seems too fine for some. Think about this: I had to do some classroom observations when getting my teaching certificate. One class I sat in on was an English as a second language class. These were adult learners by the way, so someone asked me to explain the difference between "the good beach and the bad beach." It took me a few moments to realize that he was having trouble distinguishing the vowel sounds in b!tch and beach. Easy enough for us, huh?

I am not much of a linguist so I am relieved that bellegallica could give such a good answer about pronunciation!

If it helps, regarding the "u", my wife's last name is Dusing and people don t seem to have a problem pronuncing her name in North America. For Ducher it is the same "u", and it is not the oo sound like book...does that help?

as for what Fabien does as far as hybridizing goes, I am not sure. the best way would be to ask him. I ll send him an email telling him about this thread, but he is a one man show in his company so I don t know how much time he has for chatting.
