Sorry to hear that yours had to go, I am not that impressed with mine either, she is clean, but blooms last really short and rebloom is nowhere to be found so far.

The beautiful blooms are the only reason to keep this rose since the thorns are killer...so don't lament it, just get another, better rose.

I love this rose because she is a survivor, at least in our climate. Mine is from a rooted cutting of one that survived in the back yard of a 100 year old house in our neighborhood that was vacant for over 7 years. There were two of them there, rooted in deep shade inside of a huge blackberry thicket, but growing to the light up an old plum tree.

Mine is now growing up our South facing chimney - it is healthy, blooms a lot in the Spring and then sporadically all summer. I have a white clematis growing up it, and it is intertwined on one side with Belle Portugaise and Anna Olivier, and on the other with banksie lutea. The five plants make a wonderous sight in the Spring, and MCT and Anna Olivier keep the blooms coming during the summer.

All of them are pruned way down and hiding under burlap coverings right now, as the carpenters, electricians, roofers, and painters work below, above, behind, and around them. I am holding my breath that they will survive. I will say, the workers have been very careful not to hurt them (I think MCT's thorns help her in this situation - isn't that what they evolved for - protection?).

I forgot to mention that she was the climbing form. I'm replacing her with Climbing Pinkie. It's funny that when I used to look at MCT's thorny canes, naked from the ground up 6' and more on her 12+ foot long canes, trying to be as positive as possible, I would think of her as an amazing piece of natural sculpture. In the pics you can't see the back of the cane, but there are 4 thorns in each row every half inch. I literally could not ever reach in to deadhead without coming out bloody even while being excruciatingly careful. Yes, in view of the protection she has, she must be a very paranoid rose.

You know there is a point though about the natural defenses, since I had random workers destroying my plants with whatever business they were up to - not the very thorny roses though - that makes them think twice before they try to rip out something like that.
