Blackspot finally hit!

My Moondance is dessimated by it and nothing else on the property seems to have the first signs of even ONE tiny spot. I confess I have not sprayed until this morning since May, but its been so hot and dry. Last weekend we had rain and now the Moondance plant I have - it is one of the biggest roses on my property at 4 foot tall from bare root this year!- is almost totally leaf free.....HMF says that it is highly disease resistant. http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.898.1

Makes me wonder why it is covered when all of my other HTs that are BS magnets, are apparently clean.....at least for today!

Next year you may want to keep up with your spraying on Moondance the entire season. It may be highly prone to your strain/s of BS in your area.
Maybe just the location it's in?

It is in a b lock of pots near all the others, at the corner. The ones immediately on either side (front and left) appear to be clear..they are Peppermint Splash and Liv Tyler.

Have to say I didn't MEAN to stop spraying....it just got so dern hot!

I had a Granada, Neptune & Tropicana, all hybrid teas, in the back row and Chihuly & Scentimental, Floribundas, in the front. Gave them plenty of room in between each other for air circulation, watered in the morning at the base and yes, they were spectacular, especially the lavender Neptune. The Neptune was the first rose I bought here about 5 yrs. ago. When I took it out, it just never looked good this year and the base was very rotted. Maybe it was just too old. The Tropicana I got from a local nursery and it never looked good, so that one went first. I got the others from the rose grower that is always at the U of Tampa plant sale. The Granada is a good bloomer and what a scent, but is also horrible for blackspot. I can't tell you what color the Chihuly is, because it never blooms enough to remember it. The Scentimental is a red w/white through it and I think I'll keep it and just keep it pruned so it's manageable. Sally, you're right, it is an addiction, but I just can't physically do it anymore(bad back and hands). I'm tired of wearing long sleeves in the summer and masks and glasses and going out there to spray, which takes a good 20 mins. if you are going to get all the leaves. Then clean up the ones that have fallen off and pick off the infected ones. I had roses up in PA and they had blackspot, too. They Bayer worked great up there, but I had more luck with Ortho here. I guess you don't mind it as much up north because they only bloom for a few months. My DH wants me to save the Granada because of how huge it is, but it is so unstable at the root that I have to tie it to stakes. I got rid of my sago palm because that thing used to scratch me and I'm really sick of getting nailed by the roses, no matter how careful I am. I'll just enjoy other peoples roses and save myself all the work.

Wow, I am jealous...I'm just putting my wintersown maters in the ground this week...probably won't be harvesting til the end of July! Way to go! Happy Eating! Great mater salad: Cut cherry tomatoes in half, add a Tablespoon of very, very finely minced sweet onion, salt and pepper, drizzle with good olive oil, just until it shines....very yummy with any size maters, but it's pretty with the cherries as they don't fall apart. Pretty to serve on top of grilled steak or chicken, like a salsa. I first ate tomatoes prepared like this back in Germany in 1979.

Finally hit the yard sales today

Oh, I almost forgot. One sale had a great round cake holder. It was plastic, lightweight and only 25 cents. It had a big spider web and a dead ugly spider in it. Yuck! Even for 25 cents I wouldn't buy it. I don't expect stuff to be perfectly clean at a yard sale but I think sellers should at least remove the spiders. I might have paid up to $2 without the spider. I bought the bike and glove at around 8:30am and tried to pay with a $20 bill and they didn't have change. It's not like I was paying for a 50 cent item - I only needed $4 change. They did scrape it up in the house. I always have plenty of small bills for change whenever I have a yard sale.

Hit the winter weeds finally

I got lucky with the winter weeds this year. I guess my dimension in mid september really helped out. I mulched mowed the leaves off the bermuda last weekend. I was thinking of mid february for next round of pre emergent. I use the swelling on the limbs of the redbud tree as my sign for pre emergent. What do you use?

Are you sure its blackspot? As hot as it has been, I haven't been able to keep up with the watering on all my plants, and now that somewhat cooler weather arrived and a welcoming rainy day or two, lots of my rose leaves are suddenly turning yellow and brown and falling off. Seems when a plant gets too little water and then suddenly gets a good watering, it is too much for some of the leaves, although there was no apparent damage to them back when it was too hot and dry.

Kinda sad to see all the brown leaves resulting from that good rain, but I am thankful it is cooler now.

This was such a good post for me. Yesterday we had rain and a brief respite from 100+ degree heat. The heat will return they say by Friday but I decided not to take the chance after seeing this post and sprayed today while it was still cool enough to do so. Now if the night time temperatures are below 80 I won't feel so anxious...And Kate: the same thing is happening to one of my roses (leaves crisping and browning),and your reasoning about why it is happening sure fits my scenerio on this particular rose. thanks..Glad you posted this particentral. If your rose turns out to be a BS magnet next year also, you might want to think about parting with it..Maryl

It is definitely Black Spot. The yellowing of leaves I expect this time of year, especially since we don't go dormant and all the leaves don't fall off every fall, and my Knockouts are sunburned. The crispy browning that I have had on select roses leaf edges I put up to lack of water and extreme heat, sine there was a week I failed to water correctly in that one area of my garden where those edges occured, but the spotted leaves with feathered edges around the black spots tell me its blackspot. I have had it at home this year but not at work. At home my roses get a lot of shade, so I expected it and kept the roses there sprayed. I slacked off. The good news is that there is tons of new growth coming in on this rose (and all of them actually) since the temps are out of triple digits and down to only mid 90's.....sigh.....it was 78 this morning on my way to work at 7:30. This has to stop!

So far, August has been cooler than July here this season. 70's & 80's daytime temps. The roses are going gangbusters with growth.
