Today it was fed UCG ,a whole apple (found in a parking lot) paper towels ,orange peel ,1/2 a rolling rock and 10 pecan shells. Composter forever!

I am going to try to button up for winter I have two containers of worms going indoors, they should save me trips to the compost pile during the wonderful Minnesota winter.

15 bags of leaves, a truck load of 60/40 straw/manure, 10 wheelbarrows of snow, lime and 25 pounds of UCGs. Oh 5 gallons of my compost drink old soda/beer/coffee/milk mostly just fish tank filter water, does any one else do this?

maccanut, just so you know...I added about a foot in height to my cp today, and to make it look nice, I topped it off w/ a thin layer of partially mulching leaves, and a line of pretty red & yellow leaves along the middle of the top! No one's gonna complain about my cp! (I rent & share the yard)

It's a little melancholy doing that, but it does remind me that the death of one thing means life for something in the future.

coffee grounds, egg shells, rotten tomatoes (left too long in the ripening bag), potato eyes or sprouts or whatever they are, and a couple of stale blueberry pancakes. It's been cold and raining here today, temps in the upper 30's, and when I approached the compost pile, I walked through what I thought at first was light snow. Nope, it was a swarm of very slow-moving gnats, wishing they were somewhere warmer today. As do I.

Wasp nests can be removed very early on a cool morning;
the wasps are too lethargic to fly.

It has been cold and rainy for days. I've got several black garbage bags of rabbit bedding waste to integrate into the pile, but I'm not motivated. They're marinating in the garage.

If it ever stops raining, and I'm ever home from work before dark, I'll rake up our front yard, and get those leaves on the pile.

Rainy weekends = painting the dining room.

Well I am not done for the winter. My worms can not keep up, so two gallons of Kitchen vegetable trims and fruit peels/cores. Two gallons of screening fines from corn stove. The birds also get a gallon. UCG and filters.

Yesterday & this morning I added a bunch of paper napkins that had accumulated in the car, half of a very sweet doughnut, 4 buckets of used tea bags, & a bunch of junk mail.

Ya kinda reminds me of a line from Jaws. On a more serious note it is my first year of vermicomposting kitchen waste I did not realize how much I would generate. I am on a new (to me) heart healthy diet. I am getting about 80% of my calories from fresh fruit and vegetables. I think I need a bigger bin.

Added... a cooking failure [chocolate candy that was so gross not even my 'eats-everything-in-sight" grandson would take more than a bite ... kiss of death for tastability. Plus some tofu that had taken up refrigerator space long enough.

These two additions heavily laced with horse manure and almost composted tree trimmings.

I sucked a barrel of leaves with the leaf sucker/mulcher that a lady GAVE me at a yard sale!(my newest favorite toy!), had about 4 gal of UCG and the usual kitchen scraps.
With the cut up leaves and the UCGs I have my FIRST HOT pile! DH went out to bury some stuff and told me it was quite warm! I'll have to check it out tomorrow!

It's very cold today, & the compost must endure reduced rations;

It was so cold here, we actually had *snow*, stuck to the ground & turned it white & everything.

Lots of people, including me, stayed off the roads & had a more modest Christmas celebration at home.

The only thing my poor compost pile got was kleenex & cold coffee!

Hey, it must be cold in Texas cause you've even been on the news here in Canada! LOL We just like to know someone besides us gets cold occasionally! ;-) Our weather has been really nice (for the north) and we only have about 6" of snow. My main compost bins are totally covered with snow but we're using that big black "thingie" which has a cover so hopefully it's staying warm - not likely but at least it may warm up sooner in a few months.

Compost has really scored recently because we've had two big turkey dinners in the last 2 weeks. So lots of onion, garlic, potato, sweet potato, carrot, broccoli, apple, orange, lettuce, tomato, and goodness knows what other veggie trimmings/peelings. Lots of tea leaves, coffee grounds, and paper towels also. I'm too stuffed on turkey dinner leftovers to think what all we've eaten, er... fed the compost recently.

cjlambert --- I have three fire bellied toads.(rescued them from a bad owner)They use shredded coconut shell bedding. It looks like soil but is super absorbent and a nice addition.

Shrimp tails in addition to the usual coffee grounds, egg shells, limp lettuce and forgotten carrots. The liquefied cucumber was gross, but in it went anyway.

We have a nice stockpile of chopped fall leaves to cover the grossness of those shrimp tails and cucumber for months to come.

I noticed that most of the clothes I got for Christmas were made of 100% cotton so if anything doesn't fit it won't be a major disaster.

You just cain't *say* sumpn like that to the granddaughter of a Southern Baptist Sunday school teacher who raised a dozen kids during the Depression & gave things to the less fortunate!

take the ones that don't fit or that you don't like to a homeless or women's shelter & put a "wanted" ad on freecycle or craigslist for worn-out cotton, linen, or wool duds.

I've always hated it that my favorite clothes eventually wear so thin that you can see through them, or get holes that get larger & larger until said garment is no longer acceptable in public.

It makes me feel better, these days, to know that they're still with me.

Well when a pair of jeans got so holy that even I didnÂt want to wear them, in the compost bin last February they went. WeÂll see whatÂs left some time next year. Now they will always still be with me.

I'm heartbroken.

Yesterday, I took down 13 gallons of accumulated kitchen scraps that we'd been saving by the back door, mixed roughly with the organic Christmas wrapping stuff, all the way to the winter pile, and heaved them in.

Then last night, the deer proceeded to eat most of the kitchen scraps, leaving the top of the pile festooned with wrapping paper. Way too many browns.

If you ever find Biozome at organic nursery, try it out on compost. It doesn't cost much. I paid 18 dollars for 2lbs jar and it seems to go a long way on everything. Anyway, I read that it helps break down compost pile at 3 time the normal rates for little bit of Biozome on the compost pile and you don't have to turn the pile over. Thought I'd let the word out for anyone interested to try it out for the heck of it. My brother used it on seed germination and he said it helped seed germinate pretty fast compared to control test he had to see the comparison. I bought for that reason and to control stem rot/damping off problem hopefully to see if it makes any difference. Also, it helps clean up oil/fuel spill in the ground (primary usage all over the world) and improve soil compaction. It doesn't look like it's something you get from ordinary compost so why not try it and see how they do for plants.

About those wild critters:

Just before Christmas, I brought home some slime-ish fruit, left over from the office Christmas open house.

Late the next night, when it was waay-bad dark, I was unloading groceries when I thought I heard my cat Gracie Gray scrabbling around in the flower bed.

Gracie is *not* supposed to go outside (coyotes, owls, cars, anti-freeze, dogs), but sometimes she manages to escape.

I fussed at her, & when I heard "fingernails" scrabbling up the wood fence, I marched right over to scoop her off the top.

turned on my flashlight to be sure I grabbed her securely...

& found myself face-to-face with an adolescent possum.

We were both surprised.

but it was cold, & he was hungry, & I figure he put the fruit to better use than I could have.

David -- Will those deer at least swap you their poop in exchange for the great stuff they appropriated? No honor among thieves, even in the natural world.

borderbarb, I looked, walking all around the bin in the hoof-trampled snow, thinking that exact same thing. Nary a pellet. So I turned and saw the dozen or so deer on the far side of the fence, and shook my fist, saying: All Ya'all Owe Me!
