Climbing rose for michigan

Hi, I just got myself a Don Juan which was on clearance. It seems to have got the black spot really bad after bring it home. I tried the home made soap, vinegar, baking soda solution spray to help it but nothing is helping. All the leaves are just turning yellow and falling off. I was wondering if this plant will survive or should I just chuck it and start again. Will it come back to life after the winter? Also if I use some chemical fungicide would it help and which one is recommended.

The other thing is I want to grow a climbing rose which is hardy to my zone and has a nice red color and fragrance. That is the reason I got the Don juan at the local nursery where they told me its winter hardy here.

Any other climbing rose suggestions for southwest MI area would be great too and best places to buy it.

I am new with roses and would love to grow a beautiful trellis of it with clematis. I like the HF young so any suggestions of what to grow with it would be nice too.

If you like red, the climber Ramblin' Red has been quite hardy for me here in Northern Michigan (zone 5). I have very little winter dieback, and it is a very generous bloomer. One of our rose society members who is zone 4 said that she did get cane dieback from winter, but the it sent out good new canes in the spring. The peach/pink Morgengruss is cane hardy in my zone 5 garden, as is the pink New Dawn (most years).

My climber is John Cabot. It is pink and blooms well in the spring. It has no winter dieback in Wisconsin. It never has problems with blackspot. I've heard that both Ramblin' Red and Quadra are good red hardy climbers but I don't have them.

If you want to save Don Juan, use the Bayer Disease Control spray. You'll have to spray it once a week but it should stop the blackspot. I don't think Don Juan is cane hardy in Michigan though so I doubt it would be much of a climber for you. There is a difference between winter hardy which means the rose will survive the winter but may die back to the ground and cane hardy which means the canes of the roses will live through the winter. For a climber you need a cane hardy rose.

Yes, depending on the rose, and how big it thinks it should get before it blooms. Do you know the name or type of your rose? I had a Belle Portugaise which grew 15 feet tall (over 4 years) before it produced its first bud! Jackie

Did Blue Girl show other symptoms of RRD? Did the canes that started red turn green? Or did other symptoms arise on that bush? Transmission within a garden seldom has ever happend in that sort a period of time. The vector mite populations don't spike until September in zone 5 conditions (this from the juried scientific literature.) When the rose arrived at your home from Michigan Bulb, was it leafed out, or was it bare of leaves, and had it been dipped in wax? You may not have heard of RRD before this happened. Most people haven't. But you might want to consider that the disease has been to the north of you in Canada, to the south of you in Pennsylvania, in every county in Ohio to the west of you. And so far, I've seen it to the east of you in the BBG in Brooklyn...in the middle of the city. The vector mites are easily carried by winds and fall infections on hybrid teas show most often in new growth the following spring. This I know from my own garden experiences and it fits what others see, as well. There is no way to say where the vector mites came from that infected the rose in your garden that is near your new rose. (And there is no lab test to identify the disease; experienced plant pathologists depend on a collection of symptoms for identification.) There is NO reason to tear up an entire rose bed. As suggested above, remove the sick rose(s). That's what we do when other diseases strike and it works for RRD. Do look upwind of your home for Rosa multiflora. You may find it along stream beds or even growing up into trees. With the disease pressure on roses to the north west and south of your state, RRD is moving into New York, even though it doesn't get talked about. Good luck. Don't panic or make yourself ill about this. I can say this because I've been dealing with RRD in my garden for ten years. I continue to grow roses. I loose a couple of plants each year to RRD. There's RRD in wild roses three miles away. It's become a fact of life, but I can enjoy the ones that live and try to mourn the ones I loose....a lot like life, really. The Bibliography at the back is up to date, science wise, if you can stand to read about the intentional spread of RRD to kill multiflora.

I am in Flower Mound and have a variety of jasmine to trade. I am specifically looking for light pink/dark pink Damascus rose which is highly fragrant and is used in making rose water. I also love English garden roses that are highly fragrant. If its climbing rose, all the better. Other items in my search list are Brugmansia, Oleander and Clematis. If Damascus rose is available in local nurseries, I would appreciate that tip as well. Thanks

Yes it's almost done with the first blooms of this year. Usually they need to be ordered early (mid-winter). They're out of stock now according to the website. https://antiqueroseemporium.com/products/autumn-damask?variant=1772092686346 BTW do you have J. polyanthum (pink jasmine)? Mine barely had any flowers this year. I protected them from a couple 20 deg nights in early Feb, and they're big & bushy, but hardly any blooms. I had to go to Lowes and HD to get my annual fragrance "fix".

I would agree with John Cabot. (I am not trying to be a smart a-- but it is actually a Hybrid Rugosa.) But it does really make a great climber. Does really great on arbors,fence lines, trellis, etc.

I doubt if Don Juan has ever made a climber in zone 5. It's not cane-hardy even here. It could be a dieback shrub there if you want to spray an effective fungicide.

In addition to Ramblin Red and Quadra (probably the hardiest), Fields of the Wood and Illusion have been recommended by northern gardeners. These roses also have some blackspot resistance. That gives you four good choices in red climbers, but DJ isn't one of them. See HelpMeFind.com for vendors, because a typical garden center isn't going to sell them.

Depending on where you live in Michigan, you might check out Great Lakes Roses in Bellville, between Ann Arbor and Detroit, off of I-94.
They carry a good variety of winter hardy climbers including Quadra and John Cabot. They are also very knowledgeable about roses and will not tell you a rose is hardy if it's not and Don Juan is not. Without protection, at the least, all the canes will die back. The first cold winter it'll die completely. Even with protection, I had lots of dieback on it. After repeated attempts to grow it in NW Indiana, I finally gave up.
Dublin Bay is doing well for me in it's 2nd year. It's a nice repeat flowering red.
