Question for Kim about feeding weekly weakly

Hello Kim, I hope your don't mind but I have a question. You have mentioned in other posts that you encourage feeding weekly weakly. What do you recommend to feed with weekly weakly and it is it only for roses in pots or does it apply to roses in the ground too? Thanks!

Good morning, Boncrow. That suggestion has mainly been for immature plants, and those in pots in extreme situations, but it can work for any plant, in any situation. Just as it is generally more beneficial for you to eat smaller meals, more frequently, providing a lower-dose, more constant source of nutrients for plants can encourage a heightened level of steady growth. But, it takes more time and effort from you than simply either applying the monthly dose every month; watering with the amount required every two weeks with a water soluble or applying the recommended dose of organics at the rate and frequency you prefer. For special things; for small, immature plants or very weak growers I want to push steadily, I maintain higher water levels (keeping drainage in mind with the selection of potting soil) and provide half strength food, twice as often. For solubles, instead of a tablespoon per gallon of water every two weeks, perhaps a teaspoon per gallon weekly.

For immature plants or slower growers you want to light a fire under, it works very well, but it's likely a lot more time and effort for an entire garden than many of us would wish to spend. Though, you might waste a bit less of inorganic fertilizers going weakly, weekly as the soluble nitrogen might actually get used before being flushed away with irrigation or rain. The majority of agricultural pollution is due to nitrogen runoff. Does that help solidify the idea for you? Thanks! Kim

Diane, since I use the same stuff for potted plants where kids and pets are as well as for my seedlings and cutting grown plants, I use the water soluble All Purpose you mix at one table spoon per gallon of water for most uses. If I'm fertilizing a well established potted planting, I'll mix it at the tablespoon per gallon. If it's for seedlings or immature cutting grown plants, I'll mix it half that strength. I had the liquid for the hose end liquid feeder and I have used that on the cuttings I've already upsized into gallons and the seedlings which are now pushing six months old with no problems. I've always liked the water soluble as I can tailor the strength to what I needed, but the liquid is faster and easier, but MUCH more expensive. I don't know how well it will work in the long run in comparison, but they aren't the main fertilization methods anyway. More for spot treatments and where I don't want anything which is going to stain hardscape or attract dogs and small kids. I frequently buy Vigoro because it's almost identical to the MG water soluble and costs several dollars less depending upon size, probably due to less advertising costs. (It would be easier if you would keep questions about the same topic together.) Most likely your fruit fly problem is due to food sitting there with no worm or other bacteria working on it. I would take out any food that you can recognize, add some shredded paper and wait about a week. Then you can probably bring that bin to where it is warmer and start feeding again.

I know the area well, flowers! You might want to investigate if there is any kind of azalea/camellia mix you can easily obtain to help acidify the alkaline clay where you'll plant ALmD. Oak leaf mold, peat, that kind of good stuff, things you'd use to plant blueberries, too. If that kind of material can be incorporated in the top few inches so it breaks down and flushes through the alkaline soil, it will help make multiflora happier. You can keep mulching with whatever acidic material available to maintain those conditions. You wouldn't need as much as if you were trying to grow camellias, but just enough to help mellow out the alkaline clay. This area is mainly sand. The whole valley is pretty much sand. After the quakes and all the damage, the State instituted engineered soil to mimic bed rock. When we added the patio cover, Santa Barbara County required 25" cube concrete footers on each post to secure the thing against the constant winds. I warned the installers about the engineered soil, but they still sent two, young men with pick axes and shovels. There are three posts, each with a 25" cube of concrete and those three holes took those two young men nearly EIGHT HOURS to manually dig. Literally. Oddly, water began collecting in the bottoms of the holes almost as quickly as they finished digging them, but roots don't penetrate into the soil. I used to deal with the Santa Clarita Urban Forest for street trees. They would purchase 24" boxed trees, excavate matching holes in the engineered soil and plug the holes with the root balls. Often, the trees are replaced after three or four years because the holes filled with water and the trees drowned. The soil is manually, physically compacted to be bed rock. Anything built in the state after about 1980 is on some sort of engineered soil, unless it was built on bed rock. The older builds which didn't suffer extreme damage were all due to being built on sold surfaces. The Encino house suffered nearly no damage because the ridge was stone and it was seated squarely on that stone. The newer things around it lost chimneys, walls, garages but not that old house. Other than being seismically stable, the other main advantage to not being able to dig holes is gophers HATE it. They are everywhere there is loose soil, but not in engineered areas. The city uses its parks as rainwater collection and percolation pools so more rainfall is recaptured than runs off into the ocean nine miles away. Those areas aren't engineered so the water absorbs quickly. The gophers LOVE them.

I like to hear (read) your opinion, Larry. My soil isn't great either. I just need enough of good, broken-down compost to make potting mixes. The potting mixes and composts that I've recently purchased are junk really. So, I would like to make my own. It wouldn't hurt to start a worm bin for worm castings. I've had some luck with making good compost, but it was when my gardens were much smaller, so I had time to tend to the compost. My issue was bermuda grass sneaking into the compost bin. Recently I've been a lazy composter. I throw the compost items into new raised beds and let it sit over the winter, Then top it with purchased garden soil in the spring. Because the garden areas that had the zeolite/chicken droppings dumped on them over the winter did SO well, that is what I'm going to do starting now. One bed that is empty has that combo sitting on it now. At the end of October, garlic will go there. Another bed that is mostly empty is now getting the buckets of zeolite/chick poo dumped on it (away from the 2 tomatillo that are still planted there). Anyway, that's how I plan on amending the raised beds. Rick has been purchasing Black Kow for the SG and then tilling it in. Dawn was a fan of Black Kow and it was about the only outside thing she would bring into her garden. However, the past couple of years' reviews for Black Kow have been negative. As is the situation with many purchased products. It's very discouraging. The YouTuber from Arkansas who moved so SC last year poisoned one of their high tunnels this year with purchased compost. It came from a reputable place, however the store that sold it to them was given a product that was said to be "organic", but had obviously been sprayed with Grazon or a product like it. There's countless stories like that all over the country (and beyond). I got bad stuff in the spring as well--seedlings were stunted. In my case, I believe the compost IN the potting mixes was unfinished. It was very chunky. That's what I'm finding. Anyway...it's really just too bad. I need to up-pot some brassicas soon out of the seed starter into a potting mix and I can't find anything that is good. IF I could get some good compost right now, I could make my own. Maybe I'll just splurge and use expensive worm castings.

I wandered over to the organic rose growing forum and asked a question about fertilizer and black spot and got a chemistry lesson lol. And that got me to thinking about the feeding weekly you had mentioned and I wasn't sure what it pertained too so I decided to ask you. :). It can all get technical and complex and can get a little confusing. I decided to keep it simple and just stick with a well balanced organic Fertilizer like the Tone products.

Thanks Jim, I agree lol. Simple works best for me especially when your busy with a full time job{{gwi:807}}. I have Evelyn, Heritage, golden celebration, zephrine drouhin, souvenir DA la malmaisson, 3 cl pinkies , Julia child and pink Don Juan all planted this spring. I have nacadoches, strike it rich, chihuly and heirloom all 4 years old and a sunsprite 3 years old. I also inherited a bed of 6 queen Elizabeth's when I moved in my house 13 years ago along with a seven sisters. All of the new roses planted this year are at out future retirement home at the lake along with nacadoches and strike it rich and everything else is at my home. I also have a rescued My Girl that a friend gave me half dead and so far doesn't look like it's going to make it but I'm not going to give up on it until spring lol. Sorry I just kinda rattled on lol I almost forgot ....I also was given a cutting of Peggy Martin this year and she is already big enough to tye up to the trellis!

I've had success with Kim's weekly/weakly program for young roses as well. One other thing that can be part of the program for immature roses is disbudding them so that the enrgy can go to roots instead of blooms. Harder said than done, and I'll confess that often disbudding for me means get ridding of everything but one bud/bloom at any given time. I just got to see *something*!
