winter rose containers in Ontario?

I have a question for a friend of mine.If she had internet.....she'd be here.

How should she winter her rose in a square container for winter?she recieved for Mothers day.(It looks lovely, about 2 ft tall ...lots of new growth and buds right now)

My thought was to tell her to bury it in ground& cover with lots of mulch, but wondered about field mice makeing a home.Shes had problems with them on other plants over the winter(Rose of sharon to name her #1 attacked plant.)

she has the advantage that she can move it anywhere. My other thought was maybe storeing under the deck would give more protection.I lived Indpls 11 years and my climber beside the deck.I'd always take canes down cut to 6 ft and stretch them out so could stick under deck covered in burlap.

Any one got better advice?I live where they don't need protection...so am out of loop now(and enjoy growing them so much more now!!)

I do have one small off topic posted question. Is it possible to grow a own root rose in Ontario?
