Does the 'old' Peace blackspot as bad

Got a few great cuttings of the 1940's peace to grow. Are these going to blackspot and have as much disease as the new breed of it?

I've seen posts claiming the "old" Peace is not virused and thus much more disease-resistant. Dunno--but if yours proves to be, please send me a cutting. I love Peace, but refuse to grow anything in my garden that is as BS-prone as the ones available today from our garden centers.

I got my Peace as a clone from England, and it has been very good regarding BS. Hey, what's the worse than can happen? It might be a good study to have the old and current side by side to see how each responds.

I also have a very old Peace rose. From where it was planted (alongside of the driveway, in a long row of various bush HTs planted, we think, in the late 1940s or early 1950s), I can only surmise that the original was the bush form. However, a gigantic pomegranite bush has arisen just behind it, and by the time I first saw the Peace rose it was definitely climbing. The bottom is in full shade from the bush. I hired a gardener once who unfortunately pruned it as a normal bush HT growing in full sun. Disaster. It put out tons of new growth, which immediately became covered in rust. I left it alone for a few years, and it started to climb again. I helped it up into the canopy of the pomegranite, and now the canes don't bloom until they get way up there into the sunlight (10-12 feet up). Then they produce the most amazingly huge (7-8 inches across) blooms. Luckily our bedroom window on the second floor faces exactly at this rose, so we can enjoy its beautiful bloom. Not much disease at all, except for this Spring when it has rained and rained and is still raining... I am glad I read this thread - I didn't realize that Peace had deteriorated in commerce over the years - I will definitely root some cuttings of this old one. Thanks for the info! Jackie

I am suspicious of the blame being thrown on foetida by way of Pernetiana. Every old hybrid tea I've ever seen, and of whatever color, is susceptible to blackspot. Better resistance was bred into some modern bush roses in the second half of the 20th century by introducing new species blood. These yellow roses are resistant or fairly resistant for me: Irish Hope, Prairie Sunrise, Elina, Carefree Sunshine. Sunny Knock Out is supposed to be good. Teasing Georgia is one of the more resistant Austin roses. And then there are tea roses, but I have no experience. The once-blooming early Asiatic yellows are resistant. But yes, some yellow roses are extra-susceptible. Also, the roses that are immune to several races of blackspot but highly susceptible to at least one race tend to have yellow flowers and glossy leaves--in other words resistance is untrustworthy in such roses (Sunsprite, Baby Love, etc.).

Ye gads! I wonder why some of this stuff stays around. There is a difference between corn gluten (not gluton) meal and cornmeal; the corn gluten meal is the (somewhat effective) proteins plus other materials milled off whole cornmeal, and which actually contains no gluten. It does work as a pre-emergent herbicide in some situations. Do your research to find how, and rather than doing it the lazy way on most organic gardening forums, read abstracts from university research papers and university horticulture forums (I suggest the WSU Extension forum from Puyallup, WA). You can also find whole grain cornmeal at some better grocery stores. It has the corn gluten intact, if you want it. Corn meal is good food for snails, some rodents and insects. Cornmeal and corn gluten meal are both good substrates for growing some kinds of fungi for research purposes. Just get some moist, perhaps on a pot of wet soil, leave in the shade, keep it moist and/or covered, and see what grows. As a pre-emergent herbicide, cornmeal is not so effective, and under just the right conditions (look up elsewhere how to do it right) corn gluten meal is a good pre-emergent herbicide, even if a bit $$. There is not much guarantee that your corn gluten meal would be OMRI certifiable, for most of it is made from GMO field corn. After all, since most of it goes into animal feed, and the feed producers care mostly about the bottom line, why ask for non-GMO corn sources? net-net: do better research in finding the papers and abstracts, and read critically. Then you won't be panicking about where to find cornmeal or corn gluten meal for your garden. As for tomato spot disease, just try to find supporting studies on cornmeal for preventing that...you'll likely only find anecdotal reports from some home gardeners who have been successful one season, and attribute that success to the cornmeal, but have no control against which to compare.

GardeningTeenager - I love that you rescue roses and other plants! Many of my best roses were ones I saw next to the sidewalk on my walks around town, and took cuttings to root. (twice the rose in question had been totally eaten by a hedge, and only one little cane was sticking out of the hedge, with a bloom on it, for example). So, in addition to purchasing them, you might want to think about taking walks around your town and looking for them. Neglected plants which you find near you, which are still growing and blooming turn out to be the best ones because they: 1) Have survived in your climate with little or no care. 2) Are free 3) Like your climate a LOT - I have found that that is the main "secret" to growing happy roses. Rooting roses is easy - it just takes some time. Where do you live, approximately? Once we know what type of climate you live in, folks on here can make recommendations for types of older roses which would do well. Really old roses tend to be easier to grow (no spraying, for example, and sometimes even hardly any pruning needed, etc.). I'm not sure if it is because of my location,SC, however, I have a Peace from the old genes,supposedly with a history over one hundred years old and so far the only problem I have with it are the Jap beetles. They invade, they eat it all. Seems other wise a very showey and easy rose. When the beetles come, I follow the advice of one of our local master gardeners and just chop off the buds and hand pick the invaders into a soap bath.It has lived in my garden for the past 8 years.

Maybe I should try an 'old' Peace. The one I have is from Weeks and is fragrant, but it does get blackspot more easily than any other rose in my garden right now. The beetles love my Peace too. The only rose that is more popular with the JB is Sunsprite.

No Peace rose has a history going back 100 years, first of all - it wasn't introduced until 1946 in this country. That being said, I have a bush of Peace that my uncle bought in the early 50's in the same bed with one i bought in 1998 and can see very little difference in the two, most of which I'd attribute to the one being far better established. Both have identical, huge blooms and lots of them in the first flush, then they take a break thru most of the summer only to return with another huge display in the fall. And both are prone to blackspot if they aren't regularly and routinely sprayed from March until November.

The main issue, as I am sure you know, is that the older roses would be less likely to have RMV. Up here that can really stress a plant out, esecially after a bad winter. That is why I chose to get a clone from a country where RMV is not as prevelant.

You can get VID varieties of some of the old varieties from vintage gardens.

I just got tropicana and angel face this year. Angel face seems to blackspot less and the tropicana VID colors seem more vibrant. I just got tired of the bad virused varieties I kept getting from the nurseries as those are my 2 favorite high maintenance roses.

It was worth the $.

Thirty five years ago we bought our home. We both love roses. Peace was one of our first. I don't recall
having BS then. That was when we used rose dust and
chemicals that would kill a cow. Some of you may recall
these days. Being said; I think the old Peace wasn't as
bad for BS. By the way mgleason. When you lost Virgo
to the rabbits, it really bothered me. I would love to
get my hands on that one. (Our first rose.)

You both wrote something pertinent that goes together, so I'll address to both;
VID roses are the best way to go in my opinion, but I'd rather get cuttings from UCD FPS than buy them from Vintage. That said, my Virgo was from UCD, and will be re-ordered next spring. I should have ordered them for this year, but forgot. I have about 7 or 8 (maybe more?) different varieties in my rooting house right now from UCD. They should start rooting next week. Tomorrow will mark 14 days since I stuck them. And I agree with you on the BS resistance on VID plants. They just seem healthier though I really doubt whether they are.

I hate to tell you this, but the so-called "old" Peace is the progenitor of the so-called "new" Peace. There is no change in the genes. It is what is known as a "blackspot magnet," and that's the bottom line. So, yes, it will blackspot just as much. The only way to slow this down is to have a good spray program, and follow it diligently and faithfully.

I don't know about the "Old" Peace but I have a "new" peace that I planted this year. I love the glossiness and color of the foliage, and it has been very healthy and bs free for about the last few months, while some others around it are suffering.
